lol Tracer the conversation about horror pods started with Charles Dexter Ward! I do like the two of those. Most BBC ones are good - would also rep for Murmurs and the sci-fi Forest 404. There was another one I liked that seems to have disappeared from the listings and I can't remember the name, bugger.

Magnus Archives is good but I think a bit overrated, I preferred Archive 81 (and always group those two together in my mind even though they're not related). I also think the Black Tapes is a bit overrated, and Tanis goes all over the place in the end, but Rabbits from the same producers is worthwhile.

Bit of a list:
* The White Vault (very highly rated and I think deserves it, spooky shit at a polar research station)
* The Deca Tapes (relatively recent sci-fi horror mystery, I absolutely adored this one)
* The Polybius Conspiracy (very much 'investigative horror' but this is probably my favourite version of that trope, based on urban legends about an arcade machine)
* The Six Disappearances of Ella McCray (spooky mystery)
* Among the Stars and Bones (another sci-fi horror, atmospheric)
* Passenger List (a missing plane, a potential conspiracy?)
* Dreamboy (not exactly horror and definitely NSFW, the writing and feel of this was so well done)

I've probably forgotten loads that I've enjoyed, the big problem with listening to so many is that names blur into one big mass and even looking at my bookmarked ones I find it tough to remember which was which.

still have not heard White Vault which is crazy.

loved Deca Tapes and of course Passenger List.

Did you ever hear Earth Break?? absolutely outstanding performance from Jenny Slate. she should win every acting award under the sun for that.

I also really loved Steal The Stars. it maybe.. went on a bit too long but right up my street

My wife is addicted to this one called 'Off Menu', I heard it again today and wonder if I must be missing some fine detail, it is unfathomable to me that she would want to listen to that adenoidal twat James Acaster and his comedy mate talking to another comedy mate about food, but basically just naming foods, like people name old sweets from the past.

Many podcasts are abhorrent on the first listen or two and then the rhythms of them insinuate themselves into your brain so that you start to crave them like candy

BBC World Service's '13 Mins To The Moon' is the tits.

The first episode of series two kicks off with the story of Apollo 13 and reveals something important I never knew, that the errant oxygen tank that blew out was actually dropped by an engineer pre-install (albeit only by two inches) and the elements were left to run for too long and too hot during testing. I wonder if Darragh thinks they were paid off by Ken Mattingly. :)

20 episodes in and I am so blown away by I Am In Eskew that I am actually tempted to audition for their forthcoming follow-up series The Silt Verses.

^^ This is great! I’m thinking this is gonna be the year of peter bogdanovich as karina longworth has hinted that she will be talking about him in her new season of ymrt. Speaking of karina longworh, she has a corona movie club with the guy who does the memory palace: called “it’s the pictures that got small” that is also good.

Thought I would try listening to ALAB (All Lawyers Are Bastards), starting with the episode about the fan fiction Omegaverse. It starts off with three gravel voiced american men laughing about masturbating to wolf porn. This is why I hate podcasts.

History fangirl which seems to have abruptly ended a couple of years ago unless it morphed into Ancient History fangirl.
But has some very interesting episodes.
One particular on Black Pioneers which was an area I had no knowledge of before hearing. Had hoped there might be some but most history seems to be everyone of colour was a slave up to a certain point and only around in that capacity. This shows freemen taking off for themselves.
Often having to deal with consequences of having NO legal support, representation in court etc and even when successful and making money subject to having their property shot up set on fire etc etc Greenwood wasn't the only point of extreme injustice.

The presenter also did an episode on the Green Book the book Black travellers relied on while travelling in the early 20th century under segregation. Showing where people could eat, use the toilet, sleep and so on. All basic necessities that were denied under Jim Crow.

Oddly same presenter also did a sympathetic episode on the writer of Gone With The Wind which might seem a tad contraries since those 2 I mention were done pretty well thought some white privilege might show through. Would be good to get a more black perspective on them though. But really liked those 2.

Tried Hardcore History again, still hate it

I tapped out on HH some time ago. I was on the fence with Carlin's delivery but hung with it until I got wind of some really unreflective right-wing shit he came out with on his 'current events' podcast.

his current events stuff was pretty reliably centrist

like he basically ended the show because he thought his ideas about grassroots centrist populism had been hijacked and perverted by Trump

I’ve listened to the first 4 eps of the new podcast about Traci Lords, “Once Upon a Time in the Valley”

Rialto Report’s Ashley West is a cocreator so they have tons of interviews w all of the players from the era, which is a selling point

Tonally it’s a bit too arch & knowing which I don’t like - just tell the fking story without all the playful gimmickry.

And... I will be interested to see where this goes bc so far it feels like it’s grinding the porn industry’s ax about Traci for them. Or maybe West has his own beef with her? Taking apart her autobiography line by line def reveals something about the creators but I am not sure what it is yet.

But the porn industry is such a closed circle it’s like ok so they’re all pissed at her and West or whoever wants to tell the truth about Lords and how she was in on it from the off

but the rest of the world is coming into this story knowing she was underage. She is viewed as a child. So it just comes off as bad faith to be doing this indepth takedown of how in control & into it she was when she’s 15/16!

I don’t quite see how it’s going to go over when all is said and done, if they really are trying make the porn industry’s argument on their behalf.

But maybe I am getting ahead of myself.
It’s still a good listen but I am holding my breath a little to see where it all goes.

one highlight for sure is that the interviews are legit great, West always gets good conversation from his subjects

I read an interview with one of the hosts and she talked about how bitter the old timers still were.

If Traci Lords at (barely) 18 was smart enough to film one movie she owned then narc on the entire industry to make her property more valuable... fuckin' kudos.

But I've always enjoyed hearing the story of a subculture told from the inside and it's doing a very good job of it.. And frankly, imagining an NPR-style telling of this story? I prefer the trashy version.

WELL. Think of it this way, there's a lot more to enjoy! (We especially loved doing last month's episode about the musical adaptation of LOTR.)
