I think I alluded to this elsewhere but people are queuing up to buy 2kg bags Woolworths rice in my local neighbourhood, which is now limiting purchases of staples to one or two items per person. And yet they could go across the street to one of the many Vietnamese or Cantonese markets in the neighbourhood and buy rice at a fraction of the cost in any size bag they want. (With an extensive choice of Thai, Basmati, Dongbei Shortgrain, Australian etc.)

I didn't think I was a covid food hoarder but now I realize that I am a regular food hoarder. I just brought back 6 boxes of cheerios, 15 lbs of coffee and 5 things of protein powder from the States for our pantry. Uh, and I think there are ~80 bottles of wine here. 12 cans of black beans, 12chickpeas, 6whole tomatoes, 6 chipotles, 12 tetrapaks of soy milk, brown, white and sushi rice, nori, so many crackers and rice cakes, nuts, 6 things of salsa. Lots of dry bucatini and penne, gnocchi, white flour and semolina. Bags of blueberries, strawberries and cut up bananas and ginger in the freezer for smoothies, 6 packages of frozen tortillas. We do cook basically all the time though. There was one time there was no soy milk for like a month (years ago) I think that traumatized my spouse into keeping a stockpile because he has to have it for coffee and cheerios.

Where I am, Turkish shops still fully stocked with rice and (a bit less) pasta, so no need to set foot in a supermarket unless absolutely necessary. Didn't check the toilet paper situation though.

they don't have refrigerated soy milk here. They just started carrying fresh milk in the dairy section. I bought one once and tried to make paneer.

part of my "snobbery" I realize, is based on the fact that the main times I stock up on groceries are when I am coming down with a cold or flu. So the fact that the only soups left on the shelves were pho broth and bone broth was a total wtf for me, because those are things I would consider stocking up on if I was concerned about coming down with a respiratory virus and had to be quarantined. Also, oranges and grapefruit.
stocking up on wine and good liquor is totally sensible imo

hoarders did not empty the shelves of cilantro -- i was totally smh there, cilantro is so versatile! I used it in a curry on Friday night and in Mexican beans and rice dish last night ...
