Also voted Dabaloueen. No yanny/laurel effect here, I'm afraid.

I think that, even if we aren't able to form a consensus wrt the precise combination of phonemes involved, the most important object of inquiry for me is pinning down the number of syllables in the Plantian utterance of 'Darlene'. It seems almost certain, to my ears, that we have a minimum of four, with the possible elision of a fourth and maybe even a fifth nestled amidst the others. But every time I relisten, I find myself...entranced by the fractal quality of Robert's enunciation, and new layers are revealed, like a complex flower slowly opening itself to the sun. I wouldn't be surprised if, once we really get into the weeds of this investigation, we discover dozens if not hundreds of syllables packed into this one brief, wondrous vocalization. Why, even the discovery of word sounds previously uncatalogued doesn't seem out of the question. It will be difficult work, but a rewarding investment of our remaining years on this planet we call Earth.

Ha, I remember this pronunciation striking me when I listened to Coda for maybe the only time as a kid.

Maybe Dalouie
OL i think future generations would want us to distinguish between how Percy *thinks* Darlene should be pronounced and how he actually pronounces it. Perhaps he thinks it contains an infinite number oh phonemes, and merely selects an appropriate subset for each utterance.

It mostly sounds like "dobboleen" to me but sometimes the last vowel does get diphthongized so I also voted for "Dabaloueen".

There is a spoken sample right at the beginning of the Orb's Pomme Fritz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjTP4tZmCxQ
which my brain has tried to wrap itself around for...I guess decades, at this point. I've never been able to find the source of the sample (kinda sounds like Lennie Weinrib to me, maybe?). No idea what sounds are coming out of that mouth. It's mystifying, entrancing. Haunting. Mind-bending. A bringer of joy and of tears.
Plant's 'Doawahooawualoween' evokes similar feelings of wonder toward the human speech apparatus and the feats of which it is capable. Feats which sometimes cannot be replicated, no matter how many consecutive hours I spend in the shower trying and trying until my own voice gives out completely and I just curl up at the bottom of the tub, the now-icy water slowly inducing a state of hypothermia which will take me several weeks to recover from.
