achievement: 3 of those large innocent creatures were your own children

oh wait, i can guess what it is: at the end of the game, you BECOME one of the creatures. i seriously think that's what it is

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 7 March 2020 18:10 (four years ago) link

if i don't get to be a enormous creature trying to stomp on a tiny man on a horse in slow motion, i'm going to be disappointed

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Saturday, 7 March 2020 18:10 (four years ago) link

you get taken down by an insect

spoilers

I didn't play at the game that long ago, but if I recall correctly the twist is that yeah, you are the asshole for killing all of these creatures for selfish purposes, despite warnings, and it turns out that that was the wrong thing to do, and you are punished for it.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 March 2020 18:44 (four years ago) link

most games, even iconic games, are like that, i think. they're almost like car models, with incremental upgrades and advances over the years that cross brands and genres.

This is the crux of it.

BUT, I was still surprised by how much I really loved playing through this again. Didn’t really hit until a couple colossi in, but when I was being dragged through the depths of a lake or shooting through the sky holding on for dear life I really felt the GLORY, man.

Great game, forever and all time. Stumbling upon it in the PS2 era was something special. There wasn’t anything remotely like it.

circa1916, Sunday, 8 March 2020 01:56 (four years ago) link

the advances of shadow of the colossus were incorporated into a million other games since then, so when you go back to the original the outstanding qualities might not pop out so much.

Oops, meant to grab this Karl quote too. You really see the influence on a TON of stuff, typically of the indie variety.

circa1916, Sunday, 8 March 2020 01:59 (four years ago) link

and especially breath of the wild which will also be a "you had to be there" game in 10-15 years, mark my words

ciderpress, Sunday, 8 March 2020 03:48 (four years ago) link

shadow of the colossus remains one of my favorite of all time game experiences but i dunno if I wanna replay it and sully that

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 8 March 2020 03:52 (four years ago) link

all 3D graphics will go into the memory death hole
i do want to try this remake at some point, maybe after i go back and play Ico

Nhex, Sunday, 8 March 2020 07:48 (four years ago) link

thanks for the heads up that it’s on ps plus!

mh, Sunday, 8 March 2020 15:26 (four years ago) link

Just deleted it on the third boss. Fucking unbearable.

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Sunday, 8 March 2020 15:33 (four years ago) link

Haha, its irritating quirks are faithfully preserved. Honestly didn’t feel much frustration until the last boss.

Lot of respect to Bluepoint studios. Remaking a game is a treacherous and thankless endeavor, but they really killed it. Lot of love and care went into this. Maybe the best example of a remake you can find.

As far as influence, Breath of the Wild for sure, but also (most abused comparison but true) Dark Souls. Whole downcast lonely atmosphere, oblique storytelling, untold history revealed through ruined environments, and small but direct stuff like the little shining creatures you stumble upon who drop stuff if you’re quick enough to kill them before they disappear.

Someone posted this on another ilx thread a while back and it’s a good watch.

Mark Cerny is giving a presentation about the PS5 in half an hour, it was originally meant for GDC so is probably going to be heavy on the tech and light on the games

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 15:34 (four years ago) link

the audio nerd part of this is pretty cool

people have tried to do 3d audio so many times, and it's interesting that they're going to go for the ear-scan tech that Sony headphones are also getting into

mh, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 16:52 (four years ago) link

yeah thats not surprising, unlike previous gen-ups it's the same architecture as the ps4 so most stuff will work out of the box or with minor fixes

ciderpress, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 18:10 (four years ago) link

presumably the old games will run with the ps4 pro graphics settings

ciderpress, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 18:11 (four years ago) link

Has anyone posted an official list of the "top 100" PS4 games? It'd be good to know what won't be backwards compatible at or close to launch to focus on finishing them first.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 19 March 2020 13:42 (four years ago) link

i'd anticipate all games by major AAA developers being compatible, it'll be indie stuff and smaller budget stuff using custom engines that might not work

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 March 2020 13:52 (four years ago) link

pretty disappointed no mention of PS1/2/3 compatibility tbh

Nhex, Thursday, 19 March 2020 14:58 (four years ago) link

PS2 emulation still isnt great and PS3 is a nightmare, theres no way they can guarantee that. they'll just continue doing the occasional releases of games that do work like the PS2 games that are on the PS4 store

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 March 2020 15:10 (four years ago) link

they could do PS1 for sure though

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 March 2020 15:15 (four years ago) link

they kind of admitted multiple times that going with a technically complex non-standard design on the PS3 was a bad idea. developer ramp-up time was bad, ability to emulate it in hardware, let alone software, is tricky... all in all, a good lesson for the industry :/

absolute idiot liar uneducated person (mh), Thursday, 19 March 2020 15:30 (four years ago) link

yeah you need a pretty beefy PC to emulate PS3 at consistent 30fps still, not sure if the PS5 will be beefy enough even for the games that do work

luckily most of the big games from that gen have been ported forward at this point but i get that's not the same since you can't use the disc you already have

ciderpress, Thursday, 19 March 2020 15:44 (four years ago) link

Still want to try Tokyo Jungle :(

Joey Corona (Euler), Thursday, 19 March 2020 15:47 (four years ago) link

it is the best and deserves an update

Genuinely thought Cerny was Dana Carvey for a few seconds.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 19 March 2020 17:23 (four years ago) link

Finally got Lonely Mountain Downhill since it's on sale. So far so good

I'm having that thing of wanting to get lost in a huge game for the next few weeks, but putting it off cos I can't be bothered with the tedious first few hours of learning how everything works.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 19 March 2020 18:12 (four years ago) link

It always takes less time than you think

GT Sport so unbelievably satisfying to me rn

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 March 2020 18:27 (four years ago) link

Haha those first few hours are always my favourite, learning how it works is the fun bit, beyond that it’s all just a big todo list.

JimD, Thursday, 19 March 2020 20:22 (four years ago) link

Control, while it has some issues, was overall pretty great. I'm gonna save some thoughts for when it inevitably ends up in the yearly poll results.

Nhex, Saturday, 28 March 2020 20:40 (four years ago) link

I am here for any Control love.

Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Sunday, 29 March 2020 00:48 (four years ago) link

downloaded Control and Dawn of Man.

still playing Death Stranding and trying to work out if I love love it or if it's a bit tedious over all. I like big games like this to have a lot of story, and this does have a hell of a lot of lore going on, plus lots of unexpected moments (nightmares in the Private Room are a fantastic twist), but sometimes completing standard orders and going over the same terrain over and over can feel gruelling

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Sunday, 29 March 2020 04:32 (four years ago) link

Control has always looked awesome, but I've been waiting for it to drop to $20 before picking it up, since I have a ton of cool stuff I've accumulated on PS4 to burn through first. Bloodborne, God of War, Spider-man, Wolfensteins, Uncharteds, Witcher 3, Event Horizon Dawn, Mad Max, Last of Us, RE2, more Alien, Sekiro, some other stuff ... just looking at that list makes me so happy.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 29 March 2020 12:57 (four years ago) link

Bloodborne, haven't played! next time i go back to the From Software well it'll probably be this or sekiro
God of War, any time you get stuck, just throw your axe at objects in the sky!
Spider-man, trying to get through life without watching or playing any spider-man. i bet it's actually pretty good but i have to keep the streak alive now
Wolfensteins, a friend of mine is obsessed with the newer reboots
Uncharteds, no! no nathan drake! fuck you nathan drake!
Witcher 3, oh hell yeah, but this one is 400+ hours long, just for the introduction
Event Horizon Dawn, one of those AAA games that i know is going to be really good and fun in some ways and also predictable in others. seems like the archetypal "play for 25 hours and quit" game, for me.
Mad Max, didn't know there was one!
Last of Us, i really need to play this, i never gave it a real shot
RE2, haven't played it since PS days
more Alien, Alieeeen!
Sekiro, Sekirooo!

Karl Malone, Sunday, 29 March 2020 15:22 (four years ago) link

finished spiderman and event horizon!.Both super fun! I like spiderman because we could shout things like "no, go to the west side! where we went kayaking that one time!" They did the city so well.

Yerac, Sunday, 29 March 2020 15:52 (four years ago) link

You guys trolling me with this "Event Horizon Dawn" lol.

I 100% lost interest in Spider Man, never care to play it again.

Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Sunday, 29 March 2020 15:54 (four years ago) link

GOW is wildly overpraised.
Never want to play an Uncharted again.

Triceratops Vowell (Leee), Sunday, 29 March 2020 15:59 (four years ago) link

I enjoy GOW well enough. We are I think halfway through. I am tired of rowing this boat.

Yerac, Sunday, 29 March 2020 16:00 (four years ago) link

I like to throw things in the house now and shout "Nista!"

Yerac, Sunday, 29 March 2020 16:01 (four years ago) link

bloodborne is amazing - in fact i replayed it just the other month.
i found spider-man staggeringly dull.
witcher is grebt but like yerman says it’s a long play
sekiro. sekiroooooo.

Fizzles, Sunday, 29 March 2020 19:16 (four years ago) link

i kind of enjoyed GoW but it didn’t have much sticking power for me and i stopped prob about halfway thru.

Fizzles, Sunday, 29 March 2020 19:17 (four years ago) link

i found spiderman amazingly fun and freeing; webbing your way through faux manhattan is very dreamlike

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 29 March 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link

yeah i liked the speed of the character. I get annoyed sometimes with how long it takes to move sometimes in other games.

Yerac, Sunday, 29 March 2020 19:43 (four years ago) link

yeah spider-man rules, i had thought this was universally accepted but i guess not

Nhex, Sunday, 29 March 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link

just went back and did the DLC recently so it's fresh in my mind
