No issues here (from the spotify web player)

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 14:41 (four years ago) link

I went to last.fm > settings > applications and disconnected and reconnected the spotify scrobbler and it's working now

ogmor, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 14:42 (four years ago) link

Yeah, done the same and seems ok now.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 16:36 (four years ago) link

it hasn't scrobbled from iTunes for years now, is that true for anyone else?

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 20:18 (four years ago) link

I've been using Neptunes for years and it still scrobbling along...

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 20:24 (four years ago) link

For ITunes, mine was down for a while but I updated the scrobbler app and it’s fine again.

three weeks pass...

As someone in his thirties, I find scrobbling a lonely endeavour these days. All the real-life acquaintances I had friended on Last.fm 10–15 years ago no longer scrobble due to changes in how they listen to music, or they got married and started families which dampened their time and interest in seeking out new music. I feel like the last living member of a tribe.

Looking around to see if strangers out there share my tastes is no longer rewarding: apparently challenged by the sheer bulk of music available to anyone nowadays, which means two people’s listening is even less likely to overlap than before, Last.fm has changed its compatibility algorithm. The way Last.fm tries to drive up website engagement by being too optimistic feels slimy and dishonest: now I’m seeing “Your compatibility with X is Super” even when we just share a small handful of common artists, and they aren’t even close to my most-listened artists.

Melomane, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:17 (four years ago) link

it's all true but I love it. so much hot listening data! a last.fm revival wld be good, tho I am used to music being a lonely/online endeavour

ogmor, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:20 (four years ago) link

I agree with both of these takes. Last.fm still feels like a superpower I wished was available when I was ten, and every time this thread gets bumped I'm terrified it's going to go away. It would be so lovely if someone gave it a revamp though...so much of that wonderful data is languishing inside the clunkiest interface.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:44 (four years ago) link

erstwhile ilx0rs like electricsound and stevem are still listening to 1000 tracks a week -- helps me maintain faith

mookieproof, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:56 (four years ago) link

Been Scrobbling for nearly 15 years and still have no idea why I like it

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 22:23 (four years ago) link

Yeah. Big fan too. Can we do more ourselves as a community?

kraudive, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 22:54 (four years ago) link

would be cool, im still scrobblin away

devvvine, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 23:01 (four years ago) link

Still scrobbling here too. 16 years' of data

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 26 March 2020 03:16 (four years ago) link

Mostly listen to vinyl at home, but still scrobbling strong at work and on the go.

Times have changes a lot since '07...
I still discover new stuff via a handful of fellow listeners I trust.

cooldix, Thursday, 26 March 2020 04:18 (four years ago) link

It definitely seems more of a personal thing rather than a community one now. My last shoutbox messages were almost 9 years ago :(

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 March 2020 07:53 (four years ago) link

for some reason, last.fm still thinks i'm a subscriber/pro user even though I haven't paid them anything in four years, and for that I am grateful.

Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2020 08:24 (four years ago) link

Nice.

What does being a subscriber get you - more analysis/stats?

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 March 2020 08:39 (four years ago) link

yep though I hardly use them - monthly charts, historical charts, library images etc. But I appreciate the no-ads browsing.

Back in the day, I used to subscribe for their radio streaming service but spotify pretty much killed it off so it wasn't really worth it anymore.

Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2020 08:50 (four years ago) link

I still check mine fairly often without really knowing why. I've been on there 12 years.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:11 (four years ago) link

Who am I kidding, I LOVE knowing my stats. And haven't once played a record and queued it up on Spotify so it won't be missing from my data. Nope.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:13 (four years ago) link

Haha. That's a dark secret but yep.

kraudive, Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:21 (four years ago) link

I still wonder what went on there in what was it 2015/2016 when for no apparent reason they rebuilt the site, made everything worse or just removed features completely, then just let it rot. why even bother rebuilding it? what was it like working in their development team at that time? was there some demented management decision behind it?

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:34 (four years ago) link

I think the re-design was meant to make the site more phone/tablet-friendly, as this had been introduced as a factor in Google page rankings, and they needed to maintain the site hits to retain the ad clicks.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:53 (four years ago) link

It's one of those things that I would just never stop using and would probably be low-key sad about if it went under. I've got like 13 years' worth of listening on there.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:55 (four years ago) link

Also, for the recent noughties poll I was looking back over my loved tracks from 2007 or so and there were loads of great tunes I'd completely forgotten about

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:59 (four years ago) link

biggest stats gripe atm is that the iphone app will sometimes scrobble a song 20 times after i listen to it once

btw if anyone wants to add me - last.fm/user/jdevine28

devvvine, Thursday, 26 March 2020 11:24 (four years ago) link

And haven't once played a record and queued it up on Spotify so it won't be missing from my data.

just fyi you can use openscrobbler.com to do it without having to waste the time/bandwidth

signed a guy who used to go to great lengths to scrobble vinyl and mp3 player tracks

Corduroy Stridulations (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 26 March 2020 13:23 (four years ago) link

I had no idea that existed - cheers.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 26 March 2020 19:08 (four years ago) link

I use universalscrobbler.com to log my cd/vinyl listening.

Was disappointed to find that the new Apple Music app doesn’t tell last.fm what’s been played on my phone - iTunes did.

I haven't been able to scrobble anything through iTunes for 2 years....anyone else have that issue? the scribbler still pops up every time I open the program, it just....doesn't do anything

frogbs, Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:06 (four years ago) link

Mine hadn't worked for a long time, either. Since switching laptops I've abandoned it altogether (iTunes) and haven't missed it for a moment.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:23 (four years ago) link

had a laptop with iTunes until last year, and it was working just fine (maybe too well: it double-scrobbled every played track)

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Thursday, 26 March 2020 21:40 (four years ago) link

I'm still on this thing. If anybody would like to add me I'll add you back

"signed a guy who used to go to great lengths to scrobble vinyl and mp3 player tracks"

I listen to a lot of SACDs with 5.1 surround sound. I have evolved this little dance where I hit play on my media center so that the rip of the album starts playing and scrobbles, and then I quickly switch the stereo over to my SACD player so I can actually enjoy the music.

two months pass...

fyi I was having some wifi issues on OS X, most obvious symptom was poor videoconference quality. turns out the AudioScrobbler thing I had in the menubar was causing them.

in case anyone is still using AudioScrobbler and having network issues on OS X. it was very obvious for me:

1. open terminal, type: ping 8.8.8.8
2. ping times reliably went up every thirty seconds or so
3. close AS
4. ping times were fine

lukas, Monday, 22 June 2020 01:12 (three years ago) link

I’m not using AS but last.fm in general has been wonky the past couple of days, there’s been a few hours where it would just suddenly stop scrobbling or my charts would disappear. The missing scrobbles do come back later on though

There seem to be two different Spotify widgets now (or there have been for a while) - Spotify Scrobbling and Spotify Playback (the old one). Lost two days of scrobbling as a result (I'm devastated can you not tell) - no communication about this from last.fm that I noticed, had to go to Settings and the Applications tab to enable it.

aphoristical, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 03:40 (two years ago) link

groovypanda, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 06:39 (two years ago) link

one month passes...

Given that the world is burning I thought I'd idly check my last.fm stats. Looking at the weekly stuff they produce, I average around 400 scrobbles a week, which equates to about a days listening. Given I can't listen to music at work anymore, a fair amount of listening in a week, I figured.

Well, I'm following someone who regularly posts 6000 scrobbles a week, so more than ten times my amount and, well, what? Are they just shuffling 24 hours a day for the shits and giggles? A bot? Are there prizes for most scrobbles?

Answers on a postcard to the usual address plz.
