Saw a very interesting Brazilian film the other week, Bacurau, which I'd recommend if anyone has the chance.

I know it's difficult, but it's one of those where going in without prior knowledge of the film would be a good thing. The directors were at the screening giving a very short q&a and they were (somewhat jokingly) upset about the BBFC rating card that appears before the film because it warns very vaguely of what is to come.

really hope that comes around here (fat chance)

It features Udo Kier, if that's a selling point for anyone without having to investigate the story etc.

Every film by Kleber Mendonca Filho is so worth seeing. Can't wait to see Bacurau, but it's not coming to Denmark for a while.

Bacurau is a lot of fun. It also shares a lot with a different movie I plan to see tonight. But I guess saying what would also constitute a spoiler...

There were posters for Bacurau at Landmark E Street earlier today. The question is will Landmark keep its theaters open for the next couple of months (6 people at First Cow, 3 people at Emma).

Due to the Corona Virus crisis, @mubi will be bringing forward the streaming date for #Bacurau in the UK 🇬🇧, Ireland 🇮🇪, Germany 🇩🇪 and India 🇮🇳 for this coming Thursday, March 19. Cinemas are now closing all over. Stay safe, healthy, help friends, ✌🏼🍷⚡️. pic.twitter.com/yHM9kf5U23

Bacurau is already available from multiple screening sources. But AFI is soon going to co-present it (as well as Fantastic Fungi and And Then We Danced) on an on-demand service to be named. AFI will get a cut of the proceeds and as every small business keeps saying, they need money NOW if they're to survive the shutdown. Will other arthouse theaters follow this model?

The synopsis intrigues me; I probably will watch it when the AFI link is active.

catching up w/ last year:

Zhang Yimou's Shadow is nuts -- and for long stretches, very talky -- but has the best 20-minute battle sequence I've seen in a very long time. Also never seen a lead actor with a dual role do the wasted/muscular contrast thing like Deng Chao here; I wasn't sure they were both him.

I didn't buy a lot of the plotting in Synonyms, esp some of the curious ellipses in the third act, but Tom Mercier certainly delivers a tour de force, and first-rate nudity.

if you want to see the slowest and most minimalist 150-minute meta-drama imaginable then Domains is on Mubi and frankly be my guest but believe me when I say it puts its first 15 minutes to waste

Tom Cotton being on the anti-Netflix side (as well as Pelosi's daughter) tells me all I need to know.

we're so fundamentally stupid every hit movie, book, or tv show these days just becomes more and more "on the nose" cos nobody understands how satire or social criticism works unless it's gift-wrapped for them

We watched Gunda, the new Kosakovskiy last night and... I can't quite describe it, we're still stunned... The "Eraserhead of nature documentaries" description is accurate but dumb.

I'm hoping this Joaquin Phoenix funded production doesn't go where Earthlings or Dominion did. I'm already part of the choir, so don't need the trauma.
