BATTLE OF THE WALSHES: M. Emmett vs J.T., only one can reign supreme

One of my favorite J.T. Walsh moments is from the long forgotten Dudley Moore vehicle Crazy People. Playing a flummoxed advertising exec trying to duplicate Moore's success with "honest advertising" after he's been committed to an asylum, Walsh asks his staff for suggestions for a new shampoo campaign. One of them says something about adding more body, and Walsh just looks at him with withering contempt and says, "Shampoos rob your hair of body, everyone knows that." An inconsequential line in an inconsequential movie but I've never forgotten it.

fave M. Emmett roles:

- talking about eating crawdads, and if there weren't any crawdads, eating sand in "Raising Arizona"
- Blood Simple, duh
- Blade Runner
- Straight Time
- Dangerfield's diving coach in "Back to School"
- his one scene as granddaddy Gemstone in the Righteous Gemstones

Good poll. Greil Marcus has written lots about J.T.--puts him on a plane with the great character actors from the studio years--but I like M. Emmett better: great in Straight Time, Blood Simple of course, The Music of Chance, so many others. Looked at his filmography and he was in an early All in the Family episode. 85, and he's still really active.

His mind games with Dustin Hoffman in Straight Time are pure evil.

J.T. very disturbing in Sling Blade, but gotta vote for Emmett for Blood Simple and Blade Runner.

yeah Straight Time is such an underrated gem, I should watch it again

Back when he was in everything, J.T. used to frighten me more than Jason, Freddy, etc combined.

That said, Emmett is too entertaining in too many good things for me not to vote for him.

Shame JT died so young, his portrayals of white collar and authoritarian scumbags seem increasingly like a prediction of what we’re going through now. He’d be great playing nasty patrician republicans.

He played Erlichman in Oliver Stone's Nixon.

No love for Matt Walsh, a shame

Walsh is sort of the prototypical '80s/'90s onscreen douchebag (would have loved to see his stage performance as Williamson in Glengarry Glen Ross), and was always good. he was probably actually the best thing about A Few Good Men, playing this quietly agonized military guy who has a small but crucial role in everything that occurs, and whose role was obv overlooked w/all the histrionics going on around him.

He was a great foil for Robin Williams's zaniness in Good Morning Vietnam. (As was Bruno Kirby, just in a different way.)
