some sort of big parka is essential if u live where it gets to 20, northface pategonia somth like that u can get them on sale this time of year, ll bean etcs a lil cheaper, uniqulo even cheaper, or u cld go more menswear with norse projects apc etc, also worth looking into ebay etc for used stuff if youre gonna go w the outdoor brands since that shit lasts forever and often has a lifetime warrantee

FWIW I've been mostly wearing one of these since I bought it at costco last year for like $65 -- it's good anywhere from cold to mild weather and in rain, and I like the cut of it a lot. I haven't even used my down parka this winter, but I don't get cold very easily.

It claims to have "thermal coil technology" -- IDK what that is but it does seem warm for a relatively lightweight jacket.

Been wearing a navy no-brand N1 deck jacket this winter. I've been enjoying it. Warm, bulky, comforting.

saw this at the last book fap thought it was a strong look. favourite look at the moment is grey flannels and merino wool polo neck. still rocking my old town cords, which are a great brick rich brown

misread this as "there are no lace slip on onitsuka tigers", which is also true.

three weeks pass...

Apologies if this was covered upthread, but how do you all find online stores or reliable resources for clothes? It seems like a good time to support smaller businesses and I need some stuff, but I’m also bored by a lot of clothes. There is also only one good menswear store within a 70 mile radius of where I live (and of course it is closed for the time being), so online is necessary. I’m looking for general recommendations but here is what I need right now:

1) jackets! For late spring/early summer (I am in the northeast). I don’t mind paying a little extra for something that lasts, but I want something that is both for everyday use but has some character. I’m also looking for a second jacket that’s light but a little longer that I can wear while riding my bike. Everything seems too long or too short for that.

2) Shoes. I’m not much a sneaker guy but I can be persuaded. Again this is sort of for everyday but something that looks good and can maybe take a little wear. I’m also looking for good (maybe waterproof?) hiking boots. Seems like I’m going to be found a lot of that now...

3) T-shirts. I wear a lot of t-shirts but it’s hard to find well made ones. I am not afraid of patterns in the least.

4)Pajamas ! My wife got me a pajama set and I’m really into those now, but a lot of them are a bit too dad-like (NB I am a dad, I just prefer not to dress like one). Where to find?

Things I don’t want:
- any more denim
- plaid
- khaki

Again this may have been discussed, but it seems like a lot of menswear brands (in the US anyway) are all about beards, railroads, battered guitar cases, whiskey, etc. What are the other aesthetics for dads-but-not-DADS?

pophatte (admrl), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 19:04 (four years ago) link

can you share some places you've shopped in the past and gotten stuff you like? or brands you like?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 1 April 2020 19:19 (four years ago) link

Hmmm...that’s a good question! I bought a few things from Frank + Oak (https://www.frankandoak.com/) that I liked a lot, but lately they haven’t been exciting me as much. I used to go to American Rag (https://americanrag.com/) when I was in Los Angeles. I sometimes like James Dant (https://jamesdant.com/) when I go to Indianapolis, although they have a lot of the beard thing going on. And I go to the aforementioned Jackson + Connor (https://www.jacksonandconnor.com/) here in Western Mass, which I like, but it can be pricey.

I think I’m mainly curious about how people find filters and “curators” for clothes info now. A lot of this has to to with me getting old (and trimming my beard)...

i need to check out jackson and connor next time i'm in northampton (whenever that is given current circumstances)! i had no idea there was a menswear shop in thornes marketplace.

admittedly i'm not paying attention as closely as i was a few years ago but i get the sense that the beard/workwear thing is finally passing. that american rag site is pushing a lot of patterned shirts and stuff that seems to take its inspiration for 40s/50s casualwear. i've noticed the same thing at todd snyder which has become my favorite brand for a lot of basics; their spring collection has like bowling shirts and tipped polos and loud prints.

i know what you mean as far as needing to find new filters/sources of inspiration. i'm kind of set on heritage pieces and even pre-pandemic i was WFH so much that i don't need a ton of presentable clothes. but i still enjoy seeing what's new and picking up cool stuff here and there.

for your list i'd fall back on some classics for a few of the asks. the barracuta G9 is the perfect spring jacket. i feel great every time i wear it. for everyday non-sneakers i'd look at american-made moc boots. i am going to need to revisit t-shirts myself and find some good ones for the coming warm weather. my endless supply of gray j. crew v-necks is getting pretty worn.

one month passes...

i went down a serious rabbithole yesterday looking for a replacement for my all-in-one warm-and-waterproof-and-yet-lightweight jacket from Army & Navy (a House of Fraser sub-brand that no longer exists).

i found the snugpak torrent:
https://www.snugpak.com/outdoor/clothing/torrent

the patagonia torrentshell for half the price (what is it with torrents??)
https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-torrentshell-rain-jacket/83802.html

and then some pretty high-end options, like the paramo alta iii:
https://www.paramo-clothing.com/en-gb/explore-range/product/?pk=7E4E57C9-1B9D-4E57-A523-45E45CA56D38&attributes=5A01410B-7BF6-46CC-8A97-FFEA0A577F6E

and the outdoor research interstellar ascent:
https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/mens-interstellar-jacket-271501?search_result=1

now i recognise that most of these are going to make me look like a cliffwalking pensioner and i don't care. i want something that i can wear every day in the cold, and keep the rain off me, but not make me too hot if it's like 8 degrees out. and can double as a ski jacket. but man my brain just started turning to jelly looking at all this stuff. the TECHNICAL shit, the pit vents, the high-riding zips that won't get hidden by your belt pouch. you've got a belt pouch, right?

two months pass...

i'm getting married on new year's eve and need to pick a tie. my suit is a charcoal "ludlow" suit from j.crew (nothing fancy) and both me and the other men in the wedding are wearing white dress shirts. each of them is wearing either a charcoal or a navy suit. my shoes and belt are black.

any ideas? i want to do something "life affirming" but still wintry. if it matters, the wedding is at a church in manhattan. i ordered a hunter green linen tie but it didn't really do it for me.

would a solid burgundy be good? or some kind of stripe? i don't like ties that are too "glossy" but i don't want to be informal. whenever i look up wedding outfits it seems forced. would a plaid tie of some kind work with a charcoal suit?

treeship., Saturday, 10 October 2020 14:17 (three years ago) link

how exciting! congratulations. so, i tend to be pretty conservative on these things, but my thinking is that with dark, solid suits and white shirts, a plaid is going to draw a lot of attention. in particular, you don't want you and your groomsmen to look like christmas decorations that need to be boxed up for next year.

i think a solid burgundy or a stripe with a predominant burgundy is a great place to start. consider material as well--linen isn't going to work on dec. 31. i would be looking for grenadine knits or wool ties that have some weight to them. if i have some time later i'll poke around for some specific ideas.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 10 October 2020 14:36 (three years ago) link

A grenadine tie is a good suggestion! You can get some decent ones from Charles Tyrwhitt: https://www.ctshirts.com/us/silk-grenadine-italian-luxury-tie---burgundy/TIL0482BGD.html?pf=pdp_colour_swatch

There's also such a think as a 'wedding tie' which means things like fine checks, houndstooth patterns, etc. usually in shades of gray or somewhat close. Here's one that's in wool, so it will be wintery but still somewhat refined: https://www.thetiebar.com/product/TIE-4941-0174

This one too: https://www.thetiebar.com/product/TIE-2033-0001

Or this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Ralph-Lauren-Purple-Label-Silk-Tie-Made-in-Italy-Black-and-Silver/373114607291?hash=item56df5d16bb:g:AaIAAOSwhQhY6IH3

You can also do small prints ('neats).

Whatever you choose, I'd try to find a tie in a width that is somewhat similar to the width of the lapels on your jacket. It'll look a bit more unified.

chinavision!, Saturday, 10 October 2020 15:47 (three years ago) link

er, typos, and on second look the first Tie Bar example I posted isn't as much of a true check as I thought, but you get the idea

chinavision!, Saturday, 10 October 2020 15:57 (three years ago) link

Congratulations - and grenadine thirded. I wore charcoal suit + green grenadine tie from Drake's for my wedding.

This limits your outfits drastically, as you will look like you are either going for a run or a swim and thus can’t wear them in professional or formal settings.
