yes het bestaan rules, one of the EPs that really got me into this whole thing. he has a show on red light radio called antikunst that's fantastic. he and identified patient are roommates iirc, i think of them as the amsterdam young dude EBM duo

new cardopusher. barcelona based guy with a good bit of acid in his sound and more 80's flourishes. first heard him in a josh cheon (dark entries) mix

I was asking myself "what's in bounds for this thread?" and was wondering what we collectively think about this wiki entry that somehow exists without getting deleted for being a spurious musical genre page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_techno

mh, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:27 (four years ago) link

in my mind industrial is the goth mirror universe existing parallel to balearic's all-inclusive druggy beach umbrella, and i would therefore advocate a loose interpretation of the thread's boundaries. that said i liked blawan's bohla in 2011 but i never thought aggro post-dubstep techno was v industrial, and once that wiki gets to contrasting techno industrial with industrial techno it has completely lost me

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:40 (four years ago) link

at inc miami people performed scuzzy rhythmic noise while wearing bdsm gear and i don't think they thought they were playing techno-industrial-not-industrial-techno

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:45 (four years ago) link

tried getting a friend who was into Perturbator (which is.. synth wave, I guess?) into Ancient Methods w/o much success

on the other hand, there are definitely ebm purists who have this parallel scene, at least as far as I've seen in north america, who don't like the crossover

I was attending a festival last year and was mildly disappointed when Blawan had to cancel but definitely enthused when Veronica Vasicka took over his spot

mh, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 17:00 (four years ago) link

i had the same exact experience with a friend who was into Perturbator (he also likes Umberto) and have been able to get him more into EBM through Kontravoid and SARIN, he also really likes the spotify playlist that i shared above. i think the trick for converting people that are already cool with vaguely gothic electronic music is to not go too techno too fast, start with boy harsher, kontravoid, etc. soon enough they will learn to love the brutal snare+kick and forget silly melodies

I've definitely tried to embrace a certain level of unironic cheesiness in my sets, if a track is ridiculous and makes me laugh for some obscure reason, I'm 100% playing that shit no matter how serious the techno headz want to be

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 4 November 2021 20:45 (two years ago) link

anyway. the world could do with more music that's funny and silly outright. serious heads for anything "underground" are scarce 'round these parts, anyway, so i got nothing to lose

davey, Thursday, 4 November 2021 21:04 (two years ago) link

Amen

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 4 November 2021 21:29 (two years ago) link

I had a set of >200 dark/scary songs locked + loaded for my gig last weekend, but the party people only got stoked on my set when I changed course completely, starting over with cute Taylor's request for Doja Cat. and yeah ok, the new collab w/ SZA is good fun, but man if i can't even get people to rally for Ministry or New Order on a Halloween weekend then where the hell can i play it? i know about half the people who were there, thought they were more adventurous.

anyway. my girl Jasmine put me on to this EP from 2018. good stuff.

Sextile - Disco

davey, Friday, 5 November 2021 06:11 (two years ago) link

I'm always amazed by what gets classed as campy/cheesy. When I was a teenager in Glasgow in the early 00s, trance and hard house was big with the tough, hyper-masculine lads, but whenever I play that stuff I can hear the sound of bottles of poppers being opened.

boxedjoy, Friday, 5 November 2021 13:16 (two years ago) link

trance heads have a tendency to take themselves overly seriously for some reason

This one, ancient Methods and Orphx - Answer my prayer. Dark mystical semi-trance vibe in the background, but not as you are used to it, much more pcp type gloomcore influenced. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XniAFfwmznA

this one from swarm intelligence is extremely gothic, like no-u-turn circa '97, brought bang up to date for the berlin dancefloor. disgustingly good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rrUiArPsyc

if you're willing to branch out into the electro end of things, the dark melodic vibe is no better represented by Umwelt and crew.
Spectrum Data Forces - Urano (from 2010 but illustrates the point I'm getting at.) Gloom rave perfection.

Really great clanging death trance electro from Privacy - hypnotising all your bad trips recalibrating your nervous system for the new normal of the darkside — remember that Sadism is the supreme Kantian pleasure, and hence extremely adequate to our late capitalist times.
