Yeah I’m thinking the voice blending thing is a feature not a bug, lol. This is what I’m talking about. These guys use voices in remarkably seamless ways.

So this happened last Saturday, after SA had moved into a “state of national disaster” where gatherings of more than 100 people were prohibited:

Here’s a Facebook link to Kabza x Maphorisa’s set. (You can find several uploads on YouTube as well, but I suspect they may be taken down.)

Maphorisa takes over from Darque around 01h09, and is joined by Kabza a bit later. Their set continues until 01h59, after which it’s DJ Zinhle’s turn. There’s a few hiccups in the signal but who cares, and holy fuck at all these new jams and bangers! Sha Sha, Aymos, and check out that Kwesta joint at the end!

...The bad news is that today SA went into lockdown mode, bracing for the worst.

Absolutely, I think we’re in complete agreement there.

And btw, thank you for posting that Neptizzle mix, longneck! It’s absolutely fantastic. He doesn’t stray too far from the Kabza path (with a bit of Vigro on the side), but then why would he? Hearing all of these tracks, familiar as most of them are, in a mix like that is something else. It worked wonders for me, truly a balm for the soul.

yeah, that’s a great image lol. Kabza jumping behind the decks while working in his studio or out dj’ing is etched in my brain as a gif already. They’re probably self-isolating together as well, with the work ethic they’re maintaining.
Hope I have time to listen to these sets tonight.

I have been thinking that Kabza de Small has released about 6 hours of music in 7 months or so between the first Scorpion Kings and Emcimbini. Pulling them together, it's a monumental release. And if leaving out some of the tracks that feel less special, there's a 9-10/10 double album in there. Some of my favorites:
eMcimbini, Phoyisa, Hello
uDriver, Dubai, Koko, Vula Vala
Lorch, Qoqoqo, Sandton, Hilili, Weimama
Alalahi, Nana Thula

Post yours.

Btw another person who for sure is Zimbabwean is Mhaw Keys, because I know that Ndinokuda is 'I love you' in Shona. I was listening to his EP and it's really quite good and mature.

And Aymos and Mas Musiq have just released an Ep called Shona Malanga. It's a small step down from the masters, but this is no less than very nice amapiano.

Yeah, when I checked Kabza’s Twitter the other day I saw he had posted links to all the stuff announced a month ago (see upthread: these two EPs/albums plus “EP”s by Daliwonga and MDU aka TRP x Bongza), PLUS Vol. 2 of Pretty Girls Love Amapiano. I downloaded everything, but I’m holding off listening to it (if I can) until it’s released officially – (some of it) tomorrow perhaps?

In other news, the new date for the stadium Emcimbini in Pretoria’s Sun Arena (originally scheduled for 11 April, last Saturday) is 9 August. One can hope (and dream!)

Bambelela is a jam.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link

Yes, “Bambelela” is a real beauty, and so is the track with Sha Sha (although Aymos is the star on it). Feel the Mas Musiq x Aymos EP hangs together better than the Lockdown album, mainly because there’s just one main (very good) vocalist (that it’s just 6 tracks instead of 15 also helps).

Just been listening to the (9-track) Daliwonga album as well. It’s cut from the same cloth as the Mas/Aymos EP: one main vocalist (similar voice to Aymos as well). My fave is the closing track, “My Boo”, simply gorgeoussimo, yet again:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anaCsQS-Y8o
Daliwonga ft. Kabza De Small & DJ Maphorisa • My Boo

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Thursday, 23 April 2020 21:04 (three years ago) link

As for the Main Event, Kabza & Porry’s Lockdown album, I’m currently very happy with my own 6-track distillation of it: the first 5 tracks (all with female vocalists btw), plus closing track “Hlonipha”. My faves of those first 5: “Phumelela”, a joyful bop, and “iNtombi”, which has that magic spark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LKpcADxGUc
DJ Maphorisa & Kabza De Small ft. MaWhoo & Myztro • Phumelela

The album takes a bit of a nosedive after that strong opening for me. I couldn’t wait to check out the Nomcebo track (I loved her on Master KG’s “Jerusalem”) but I feel the gospel melody doesn’t work here. The Busiswa track is underwhelming as well. Yes, these Scorpion King albums are all about luxuriating in the wonderful sameness (© Simon H.), but the tracks in the second half felt a bit too meandering the first time around, with not enough melodic pleasure or bop factor. Thank God for that final track, which has both in spades:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8fiqu8lBYA
DJ Maphorisa & Kabza De Small ft. Howard & Buckz • Hlonipha

(But who knows, I might yet fall for at least some of these tracks, just like I did, quite late in the game, for “Idliwe” with Mlindo and Howard on Scorpion Kings Live, with its lovely horn hook - they should use more horns!)

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Thursday, 23 April 2020 21:17 (three years ago) link

listened to it this morning. very good album (another one!), although song-wise I don’t think it’s on the level of the Mas Musiq one. really like the rich percussion on these tracks.

kiss some penis reference (breastcrawl), Sunday, 22 November 2020 12:52 (three years ago) link

It's more of a vibe, but it sounds like something that might grow on me if I let it. Daliwonga's voice is pure bliss.

keep it coming, Kabz!

Kabza (and to a much lesser extent Maphorisa) is all over the new DJ Stokie album as well, which I have yet to listen to. Lots of Daliwonga on there too.

As for Tresor, he dropped several pre-album songs in the past few months - I posted “Zwakala” on the Sun-El thread, but since then we’ve had “Dancing With The Moon” and “Walk Thru Fire”.

Meanwhile, there’s a superb new Samthing Soweto EP to enjoy, with De Mthuda producing instead of K&M. Check the Sun-El thread for more!

yeah those three tracks are the "this year's singles" I was alluding to -- excellent stuff. There's also "Thrill," which is maybe a little less exciting.

And don't worry, I have the Sun-El thread bookmarked. I just can't post anything as I've only managed to listen to maybe half a dozen tracks combined from the new Sun-El and Samthing projects :/

on collaborating with Kabza:

with amapiano, I didn't want to interfere much by introducing too many new elements. I was already a fan of the sound. Back at the studio with Kabza, I would study him while he did his thing and then step in where I'm mostly good at — songwriting and recording vocals. We had two different chemistries that benefitted from each other. We really vibed in studio, and as a result, composed a lot of music and experimented with new sounds.

Blick, Bils & Blinky • Let's Skip The Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Sunday, 25 April 2021 11:43 (two years ago) link

on gqom vs amapiano:

I knew that this was a sound that would take South Africa to the world. There's a lot that you can do with amapiano — you can make it soulful, funky, dusty and hard or jazz it up. At some point, I knew that gqom would reach its sell-by date because it was fast-paced and dark. I find that once a genre becomes dark, the songs end up sounding the same. Gqom was dope but I also felt like it was, only, for certain people. However, with amapiano, I realised quite early on that there was a lot that we could do with it.

Mambisa II, the new Mas Musiq album, is fantastic, as good as any of the Kabza x Maphorisa albums, if not better – for one, it has lots of post-“Emcimbini” tracks with beautiful vocals (Aymos, Daliwonga, and Mlindo all show up, Sha Sha doesn’t, but Nia Pearl and Nicole Elocin do instead), feel free to take your pick and post some...

...but I’ve been looking for this Joni ever since I saw and heard the crew working on it live and direct on Madumane=Maphorisa’s Instagram live stream in early August:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv0AorbSFXQ
Mas Musiq ft. Madumane, Daliwonga, Vyno Miller, Kabza De Small & Myztro • Joni

It was all of the above (minus Kabza, so the groundwork had already been laid) together in a small studio (no facemasks, shared vaping, aargh), adding verses and ad-libs on the spot. Thought for sure they were going to drop this monster the very next day, but no. Kept checking YouTube to see if someone had posted that session, again no. Guess they were waiting for the “December” season...
