"otoh it has sort of revealed to me how easily i've cut people out" just made me remember some people i havent seen for an age and lo and behold theyre on here...

What is the point of poking people? I don't want to poke any of my friends, particularly, but I might if I knew the point of it.

ailsa, Sunday, 8 July 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I think it's just a way to say hi without having to think of a specific message to send.

accentmonkey, Sunday, 8 July 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Let's see.

accentmonkey, Sunday, 8 July 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

i suppose its the equivalent of passing someone you know in the street and just nodding at them.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 8 July 2007 21:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I've just poked accentmonkey, so we shall see. Report back, please.

ailsa, Sunday, 8 July 2007 21:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i need to create a fake ID on facebook then i will poke every single one of you til your dying days

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 8 July 2007 22:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Pervert.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 8 July 2007 22:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Why does it need to be fake? Surely your anonymity will protect you?

Also Ned just loves pokes, the dirty tart...

kv_nol, Sunday, 8 July 2007 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

(I think I might be unfriended now. One to many 'poke' jokes at Ned's expense)

kv_nol, Sunday, 8 July 2007 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I got a notification with a picture of a finger on it to say that Ailsa had poked me, and asking me if I wanted to poke her back. But our math teacher is, like, a real hardass? So I decided not to.

accentmonkey, Monday, 9 July 2007 07:01 (sixteen years ago) link

How do I get round this mobile notification thing? I don't want to have to input that 'cathchpa' (sp?) code each time I add someone but it says it can only send the mobile verification code to an American or Canadian mobile phone. I did a google and if I email them saying I'm blind they'll email me the code but I'm not blind.

NI, Monday, 9 July 2007 10:41 (sixteen years ago) link

mobile notification?

nathalie, Monday, 9 July 2007 11:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, to verify that you are who you say you are (and thus stop you having to input a code each time you add someone) Facebook send a code to your mobile phone which you then need to input in the 'mobile confirmation' box. At the moment it seems that it's only for US and Canadian mobiles but does anyone know a way round this for UK people?

NI, Monday, 9 July 2007 11:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Someone I knew many years ago just became friends with our old classmate. I want to write to him but can't think what to say! ARGH!

kv_nol, Monday, 9 July 2007 12:13 (sixteen years ago) link

i just got sent a friend request from this guy i had a brief fling with about five years ago. he found me through another guy who also just sent me a friend request, a guy i met randomly on myspace and who lives in my city. fucking hell, this world is just too small sometimes. i don't really want to be friends with either of these guys, really, but it seems just too rude to deny the requests. i hate facebook. but the guy i had the fling with borrowed some books off me before we split up and never returned them, so maybe i'll get them back now.

Rubyred, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe you should set it so they can only see your 'limited' profile. That might send a bit of a "don't think about getting too chummy" vibe from the outset.

Drooone, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:14 (sixteen years ago) link

i just had an interesting message exchange with the fling guy... he's married and living in japan teaching english! which is funny, because i'm thinking about doing the japan thing next year. his contract runs out in aug 2008 and he thinks he can hook me up as his replacement... very interesting...

Rubyred, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Cool. So not weird at all.

Drooone, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:33 (sixteen years ago) link

he's also promised to buy replacements for the books he borrowed and send them to me. but i doubt that will actually happen.

Facebook 'poke' leads to awkward one-nighter

I don't think I'll ever be joining Facebook, despite having been invited to by one friend recently. Its one online area I don't feel like I belong in for various reasons.

Mark G, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 12:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Waste lots of time adding applications.

nathalie, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 12:51 (sixteen years ago) link

OK.

Maybe that's why it's so quiet here!

Mark G, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 12:53 (sixteen years ago) link

and waste some more time deleting them again.

is it possible to export facebook contacts to, say, the address book on my mac? it occurred to me that this would be useful, and the same idea seems to have occurred to other people too, some of whom did something about it, for example:

http://wwww.tuaw.com/2007/04/03/facebooksync/

unfortunately, it seems that i'm a month too late:

http://www.fsbsoftware.com/

does anyone know anywhere where i could find this or similar? i tried some obvious torrent sites, but with no success...

facebook is now weirding me out. too much school :/

grimly fiendish, Friday, 13 July 2007 21:55 (sixteen years ago) link

i got send a friend request quite randomly by an english guy. turns out he was searching for a nz friend and the search engine threw up my name (true? or a line? i dunno). so we got talking and now he wants to take me out for coffee (he lives in my city). but he's an adrenalin junkie and i'm a lazy bitch. maybe he's just trawling the net for potential shags??

Rubyred, Friday, 13 July 2007 22:57 (sixteen years ago) link

would that be so bad?

Filey Camp, Saturday, 14 July 2007 00:05 (sixteen years ago) link

no.

Rubyred, Saturday, 14 July 2007 00:34 (sixteen years ago) link

but he won't be getting a shag from me.

Rubyred, Saturday, 14 July 2007 00:35 (sixteen years ago) link

my facebook relationship status is 'complicated'. so hopefully that preempts any unwanted player-moves.

Rubyred, Saturday, 14 July 2007 00:36 (sixteen years ago) link

you think so? why? 'complicated' doesnt necessarily suggest that to me

Filey Camp, Saturday, 14 July 2007 06:37 (sixteen years ago) link

exactly. complicated relationship vs easy shag.

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 14 July 2007 09:16 (sixteen years ago) link

not that i'm saying you're easy :) i just mean, which would most people choose? or think that a potential facebook hook-up might want?

(me: probably the complicated relationship. at least, based on historical example. but hey. i'm just weird.)

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 14 July 2007 09:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Why, because most of the population are young enough to be your children?

ZING! ZOOM-ZOOM-ZOOM!

I kid, Trayce, you know I do.

Mikey Bidness, Saturday, 14 July 2007 09:29 (sixteen years ago) link

um, doesnt complicated mean kind of non-monogamous, which means, (hopefully) no strings easy hookup time? cuz theyre going to stick with the other person (otherwise, they'd just be single)

Filey Camp, Saturday, 14 July 2007 11:55 (sixteen years ago) link

one of my friends who claims 'complicated' status is having a fucking kid and moving in with the one he's 'complicated' with. i think it's usually a desperate bid to appear interesting.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Saturday, 14 July 2007 11:58 (sixteen years ago) link

it's complicated

RJG, Saturday, 14 July 2007 12:02 (sixteen years ago) link

it always is, with some people.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Saturday, 14 July 2007 12:04 (sixteen years ago) link

my 'complicated' status is for a couple of reasons: firstly, because i'm in this more-than-friends thing with someone who lives in another country. we have no exclusive relationship, but he's the shizzle and i have no interest in casual flings with anyone else. secondly, i won't rule out meeting someone and falling for them, but the truth is that i'm totally into someone else, and i don't want to lie about it. at least this way, the subject comes up right away, so the other person knows where they stand.
