i like that the US seems to have lawyers who are knowledgeable AND funny even abt p dark stuff, the uk equivalents are mostly pompous and dreary (also often weirdly wrong): 5-4 and ALAB are both the errant children of the lamented mic dicta, sharing some (very funny) hosts and even some (fake) beef

Cosign. I've never listened to Reply All before, and none of the other episode summaries particularly make me want to, but that was near perfect. Like a Serial style true crime detective show except a) short and ii) no-one gets killed.

I respect the chutzpah of Rob Sheffield hypothesizing that this song he doesn't recognize is therefore likely a fake.

Reply All is generally great and as a testament to how great and I bulk listened to it and I *wish* someone would tell PJ Vogt to s l o w down when he talks, he misses every third consonant and his maniacal uptalking drove me a bit mad.

Reply All is something very rare: a great podcast with unbearable hosts.

The bit at the start of the missing hit episode where he names his forgotten sci-fi book - I clicked back and listened to it about ten times and had absolutely no idea what he was saying. then i saw the link to the transcript.

I really liked this but I listen to a looooooooot of horror audio dramas, so I'm clearly good with some of the faux-investigative tropes that might put others off that stuff.

What other stuff do you like emil.y?

My favourites are Within the Wires (perhaps not so much 'horror' but deep uneasiness and very interesting formal framework) and I Am In Eskew (Lovecraftian dystopia). A little busy at the moment but I can come back with a longer list of recommendations later.

lol Tracer the conversation about horror pods started with Charles Dexter Ward! I do like the two of those. Most BBC ones are good - would also rep for Murmurs and the sci-fi Forest 404. There was another one I liked that seems to have disappeared from the listings and I can't remember the name, bugger.

Magnus Archives is good but I think a bit overrated, I preferred Archive 81 (and always group those two together in my mind even though they're not related). I also think the Black Tapes is a bit overrated, and Tanis goes all over the place in the end, but Rabbits from the same producers is worthwhile.

Bit of a list:
* The White Vault (very highly rated and I think deserves it, spooky shit at a polar research station)
* The Deca Tapes (relatively recent sci-fi horror mystery, I absolutely adored this one)
* The Polybius Conspiracy (very much 'investigative horror' but this is probably my favourite version of that trope, based on urban legends about an arcade machine)
* The Six Disappearances of Ella McCray (spooky mystery)
* Among the Stars and Bones (another sci-fi horror, atmospheric)
* Passenger List (a missing plane, a potential conspiracy?)
* Dreamboy (not exactly horror and definitely NSFW, the writing and feel of this was so well done)

I've probably forgotten loads that I've enjoyed, the big problem with listening to so many is that names blur into one big mass and even looking at my bookmarked ones I find it tough to remember which was which.

still have not heard White Vault which is crazy.

My wife is addicted to this one called 'Off Menu', I heard it again today and wonder if I must be missing some fine detail, it is unfathomable to me that she would want to listen to that adenoidal twat James Acaster and his comedy mate talking to another comedy mate about food, but basically just naming foods, like people name old sweets from the past.

Many podcasts are abhorrent on the first listen or two and then the rhythms of them insinuate themselves into your brain so that you start to crave them like candy

BBC World Service's '13 Mins To The Moon' is the tits.

The first episode of series two kicks off with the story of Apollo 13 and reveals something important I never knew, that the errant oxygen tank that blew out was actually dropped by an engineer pre-install (albeit only by two inches) and the elements were left to run for too long and too hot during testing. I wonder if Darragh thinks they were paid off by Ken Mattingly. :)

20 episodes in and I am so blown away by I Am In Eskew that I am actually tempted to audition for their forthcoming follow-up series The Silt Verses.
