Ok so very weird but I also thought Danish and was calling him the hot Dane until I looked it up.

Watched s2 on a dull Sunday. It continues to be...fine. I will give them props for making drunk Otis a pure shithead.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 24 February 2020 11:36 (four years ago) link

God I love this show so much.

All the cars are from the 80s too. And the bikes. And Otis' clothes are straight from photographs of my brothers in the 70s.

And I adore all the houses. So much. And the roads. Em and I talked about moving.

It feels a little like Breaking Bad to me in its own awareness of its status as a TV programme, and the hieightened reality that goes along with that - the colours, the costumes, the sets, that slight air of visual and narrative unrealness that allows the emotions and characters to actually seem even more real.

Adam's arc had me in tears in the last episode about three times.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 24 February 2020 14:59 (four years ago) link

Honestly I'd probably have liked it more were it not for the final beat with the voicemail. The whole scenario was contrived and shitty in both concept and execution in a way most of the show manages to avoid being.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:01 (four years ago) link

I didn't like that final beat with the voicemail but I kind of accepted its necessity from a 'setting up s3' pov.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:17 (four years ago) link

Em and I talked about moving.

Ah, the Forest. Where I was told by an estate agent DURING A VIEWING that I wasn't Foresty enough to buy a house there.

What’s your beef with the voicemail???

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 24 February 2020 15:24 (four years ago) link

tt keeps badgering me to take us to the Forest of Dean and learning that this show is filmed there will probably not alter that

I thought it was the Pacific Northwest until I looked it up.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 24 February 2020 17:14 (four years ago) link

What’s your beef with the voicemail???

On a show that's ostensibly about the need for communication and openness, it feels like a cheap stacking of the deck to have a character we barely know diabolically intervene to counter a straightforward attempt at said communication. And as other people objected: a) who confesses love in a voicemail? b) why would she leave her phone behind at all? c) does she not have a passkey or fingerprint check like everyone else? Because the plot needs it to happen in order to keep things delayed, is why, not to serve the themes/thesis.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 24 February 2020 17:19 (four years ago) link

Definitely feel like the ending of S2 was setting up a potential coercive control storyline for S3.

I watched both series in the space of a week, if that, and loved it. Thought the non-specific style, time and location was great in setting up a slight suspension of disbelief, and probably was good for making it a bit more universal.

michaellambert, Monday, 24 February 2020 17:25 (four years ago) link

X-Post Ok fine I agree on b and c but I think given the situation he totally might have done it in vm.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 24 February 2020 17:27 (four years ago) link

I had the same thought, not really about the mechanics of it (although considering the casual approach to time periods & technology, maybe they should have just given her a landline & answering machine!), but that communication is such a primary theme in the show. And I hate plots that rely on miscommunication/misunderstandings (that could easily be resolved if characters actually had a conversation) for too long.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 24 February 2020 17:27 (four years ago) link

which contrarily was what worked about the Rahim storyline, here's a character who's so upfront and transparent and mature, but the people around him are just not like that (yet, presumably), incl his partner, and he winds up screwed because of it.

two weeks pass...

I've bailed on the second season. The writing took a nosedive and like a lot of second seasons it just feels rushed.

don't think you'll find many agreeing with you there

strangely hookworm but they manage ream shoegaze poetry (imago), Wednesday, 11 March 2020 12:08 (four years ago) link

Ech. My appetite was more than sated with the first season and, to murder that metaphor, all of that nourishment started to feel like excess. I found Maeve (who I totally fell for: who didn't?) increasingly unbelievable and the more they explored the different characters the more they seemed to hollow them out. I may just be dead inside.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 11 March 2020 12:13 (four years ago) link

I can kind of see that. Season 2s are often very difficult after a great first season.

Yerac, Wednesday, 11 March 2020 12:14 (four years ago) link

If I could pinpoint a moment when I thought, nah, I can't be bothered any more: the first glimpse of the relationship between Hendrix and Ms Sands.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 11 March 2020 12:17 (four years ago) link

oh yeah, i totally would play candy crush during those scenes.

I'm only 2 episodes in but the new series seems rather unfocused. I can't even remember Otis going out with Ruby even being a plotline in s2.

He got drunk and lost his virginity to her at his party, further bonding w/her during a mad search for Plan-B pills the next day.

They probably should have emphasized that more in the recaps tho.

Ah ok. I vaguely remember now.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Sunday, 19 September 2021 14:03 (two years ago) link

I've been racing through and it benefits this year from a non-relationship storyline. Still a bit all over the place at points though, especially on the French trip episode when it feels like everything is being taken apart solely to put it back together again later in the series.

There's a bit in ep 6 where Gillian Anderson turns completely into her Thatcher persona, and it kills her character more than a bit.

I saw Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Eric, on that portrait painting show on sky arts and I was quite delighted to discover he has a Scottish accent.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Sunday, 19 September 2021 17:08 (two years ago) link

Gatwa was born in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda,[10] on 15 October 1992[11] His father, Tharcisse Gatwa, who hails from the Karongi District, is a journalist with a PhD in theology.[12][13]

Gatwa was raised in Scotland, primarily in Edinburgh and Dunfermline. He attended Boroughmuir High School and Dunfermline High School and graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow with a BA in Acting in 2013.[14][15]

Got to the end and although I enjoyed it more than S2 I found it hard to stay in the reality of the show for lots of reasons I will elaborate more on in a couple of weeks once we're a bit further out of spoiler territory.

Have watched 3 eps of s3 and so far it’s just as great as it ever was. I love what they’ve done with Ruby and the backstory to her brittle bitchiness.

https://www.businessinsider.com/look-inside-sex-education-house-up-for-sale-otis-jean-2023-10

The iconic house from the hit Netflix show "Sex Education" has gone on the market for £1.5 million, or around $1.8 million.

The Norwegian-inspired chalet, which is located in the English village of Symonds Yat in the Wye Valley, dates back to 1912 when it was used as a salmon fishing lodge, real estate agent Knight Frank's website says.

I thought this season was mostly good, but the extended descent into metaphysical nonsense absolutely had me rolling my eyes. Mostly satisfied with the ending though.

I keep seeing Ncuti here and wondering how or if it is going to tie in with his performance as the Doctor. Nit really seen the breadth of hys talent since I've mainly seen him in this and Barbie and I'm not sure that's even a shaped part.
