i've been doing learned league for a few years on an invite from jaymc. i'm in C rundle, which seems to be about right since i almost always end up right in the middle of the rankings at the end of each season. i've had a strong start to this season so far but i'm sure i'll hit a rut and end up back in the middle again.

my ongoing minor issue with the main learned league is the "classical music" category, which seems very specific for a stand-alone category (that i suck at). i wish they just had a "music" category that spanned all genres.

I can't immediately find anything from the Commissioner about this, though it is a widely accepted norm within the LL community. On the LL board, whenever anyone posts even the most innocuous thing about a question while the Match Day is live, the post gets deleted.

Also, here's someone in a Learned League thread on the Jeopardy! message board:

With the new season and new players, it is a good time to remind everyone of the rule about discussing matches on this board. Please do not make any comment about the questions until that day's results have been posted on the LL board. Do not say how many you got right or wrong. Do not say if you thought they were hard or easy. Just do not say anything at all about the questions until the LL day has ended and the next day's questions are up.

As extreme as it may seem, I think it makes sense to stick with that rule here, too.

I lost 8(5)-7(5). Always disappointing to get the same number of questions right but lose on defense.

I am averaging about three right per game, but in the rookie league with some judicious defense, that seems to be enough to stay fairly competitive.

damn i almost missed this thread. u can find me having terrible defense to start, i'm 2-2 :/ i'm usually decent on defense? but i have been getting steadily worse somehow season over season. idk why.

Actually, I am going to answer my own post and note that the Commish has laid down the law about this, so I am going to respect that decision, but I still find the whole thing amazing sometimes.

@Leee: You only have to pay after you've completed a full rookie season, so you can try it out and decide if you like it. I have plenty of invites to spare, too.

the 30 also covers a full year, which is i believe 3 or 4 seasons, so if you like the first season you're not paying too much to keep going!

Okay, I just looked, and you can only give out 1 invite per season (unless you are a Premier or Commissioner's Circle member). Pretty sure there were more at one point, but I don't blame Thorsten for wanting to put some controls on growth.

Why the low get rate on Q4 yesterday, Charles Pathé? This was the flaw in my defense, since I thought everybody must know this, especially an opponent with .761 in Film so assigned it a zero, allowing him to tie me 4(4)-4(3). Note: really don’t care that much, long ago gave up agonizing on defense, valuing speed over accuracy, having long ago settled down into C Rundle, most of my enjoyment now coming from the occasional 1DS or ML.

I have found the less I overthink defense and the more I just go with my gut, the better my defensive performance is. I have never heard of Charles Pathé before, even after seeing the answer it is totally unfamiliar to me and my lifetime film score is .776

I saw that on the OQL Facebook group, we had some brief interactions on this thread round about the time of the quizzing world cup. So sorry to hear this, seemed a very well loved presence in the quiz scene and a good friend to many.

I've clinched another 1st place finish, which leads me to believe that the Plateau league really is less competitive. Granted, I will likely also set a personal record for correct answers, but in the season when I set my current record, I finished 8th (in the Sakura league).

I'm comfortable in mid-table obscurity in A Meridian, but I was a bit confused about why I am so low as 16th, given that I am 13th in Total Correct Answers, 11th in fewest Correct Answers Against, and actually 2nd in Defense. Will M.'s post holds a hint to the explanation: Turns out that it has to do with "defense against", which doesn't appear to have its own stat heading: I am rock bottom at Match Points divided by Correct Answers, i.e. I am apparently really easy to defend against!

Doing some 1DS playtesting now. Starting to think of better ways to approach this than I have in the past, will report back later.

Feel like I am getting better at the giving of feedback for these things. I recommend everyone try it out at least, especially if you are writing your own 1DS’s.

I've been doing OQL (UK) version since season one. I do Pop Culture Challenge (our version of Pop Solos) from time to time, and can highly recommend COQL (which is basically Only Connect) as well.

Can also recommend Mimirs Well, Fundaesliga and Zephyr Quiz League if you need further quiz fixes.

All individual iterations on the mimir format used in Pop Solos/ICC - the latter two have a slightly different structure - 8 rounds of 2 questions each rather than 5 rounds of 3.

Deep the solos have divisions?

In the UK it starts off randomly with one seeded player, then results see you banded with players who have had similar results to you in this particular tournament - expect Pop Solos works along the same principle

255 contestants, not too many I track, although a certain individual associated with the initials RS (barely) cracked the Top 20, which made me happy, and a certain trivia monster came in third.

Seems like everyone was doing Authors Behaving Badly instead, not that I mind, although I submitted three minutes late on that so my results didn’t count.

…and I have two 1DSs to work on for next year.

Haha, SCP came up in an OQL UK friendly last week. We were all saying we had no real idea what it was, but all LL players were retrospectively glad of the conversation.

Yes, I do appreciate that defense is pretty much a crapshoot in my ML; my own projections of the get rates of the questions has been way off in a few instances.

i was just thinking that this season's questions seem easier than usual so far, or at least more in my wheelhouse - feels like a lot more pop culture stuff than usual

though that probably means the rest of the season will be all classical music and ancient geography
