So, do we think Singularity would place in the top twenty now? I'd be tempted to vote it very high.

These pictures are beautiful Millsner, you did an amazing job with this poll. You too Bee!

This thread springs to life every now and then, and I'm always happy when it does. Thanks, Bee, and everyone who participated.

They're touring with the Pet Shop Boys ...

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 February 2020 15:37 (four years ago) link

got invited to this but i think i have seen New Order enough in my life. i will see.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 02:42 (four years ago) link

I've never seen New Order so I'm kind of all over this

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 17:50 (four years ago) link

The three times I've seen them have been Hook-less, all good to outstanding.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 17:52 (four years ago) link

I've seen them ...4 times, maybe? One with Hook, the rest without, but they've all been good. However, every time I've seen the PSBs (maybe 5?) they've been better, or at least I had a better time. NO always felt pretty nostalgia show, as solid as they were. PSB introduced more surprises: different mixes, a good selection of songs. The bigger question is whether the two will collaborate on any of the Electronic songs. A highlight of seeing Johnny Marr the last time he came through town was him playing "Getting Away With It."

(Note to tour people: they should just add Johnny Marr to the bill, as featured player.)

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 18:05 (four years ago) link

I saw them once with Hook way back in 1989, which I'm grateful for simply because I think the various emerging solo ventures after that essentially broke what had been a steady dynamic (at least in terms of Sumner/Hook/Morris having been working together since '77). But I've not seen them since, so I'm intrigued to see them again now with all that time and distance. That 1989 crowd was a worshipful LA-area KROQ bedrock experience, young and enraptured -- and clearly that can't be the case this time around, growing old means that much.

New Order sound great as a band, and they do different versions of their songs now, which is fun to hear, but holy shit, Bernard Sumner is somehow even worse of a live singer now than he was back in the day, and he was really shit back in the day too. Anyway, should be fun, but just don't go because you love Bernard's voice.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 18:20 (four years ago) link

I go for the lyrics.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 18:21 (four years ago) link

Anyone who goes to see New Order live because they love Bernard Sumner's voice is insane

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 18:56 (four years ago) link

I earned the highest GPA of any senior from the Bernard Sumner School of Advanced Lyric Writing and Singing, and I would never check out NO to revel in his pipes.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:00 (four years ago) link

I feel good and i feel bad, but common sense i've never had.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:03 (four years ago) link

One reason I haven't seen New Order live is because I've seen concert footage and my general reaction has been "why do they let him sing"

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:03 (four years ago) link

Why don''t they let Gillian take a turn on vocals for the next album? It can't be worse. They should have Bernard on 4 songs, Gillian on 2, and then finish the album with 2-3 instrumentals.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:04 (four years ago) link

Hook’s NO book suggests that he ground his teeth in irritation through most of their shows, at Barney’s whoops and laziness

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:07 (four years ago) link

I got the impression from Hook's memoir that everyone in the band was lazy except Peter Hook.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:12 (four years ago) link

Well Peter Hook can eat a bag of dicks too, with his COME ON'S yelled during LWTUA and the rest of anything he utters on the microphone. Keep that man 50 yards from the nearest live mic, imo.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:13 (four years ago) link

So the solution is to bring along Dave Gahan?

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:15 (four years ago) link

Jimmy Coversale.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:17 (four years ago) link

Coverdale too.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:17 (four years ago) link

I'm telling you, get Marr! Marr is a fine singer, and can not only bolster Sumner and the band but also play with the PSBs and sing with them, too.

Or Coverdale, he's got pipes.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:35 (four years ago) link

what's the guy from Information Society up to

avellano medio Inglés (f. hazel), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link

Pure energy.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:44 (four years ago) link

I dunno, David Sommerville might be a better fit.

(Marr has an acceptable voice if you want to hear Smiths songs being sung over while Johnny Marr plays guitar. He is a very boring frontman though [also Bernard Butler replaced him as PSB utility guitarist on the new album, whose own voice is more on a The Other Two level])

I got the impression from Hook's memoir that everyone in the band was lazy except Peter Hook.

He very fairly also gives the impression that everyone in the band hates going to work with him because he’s such a massive prick.

Fantastic. Great move. Well done (sic), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:49 (four years ago) link

About the only kind thing he says about Gillian was how well the three worked together recording Republic before Sumner and Stephen Hague purportedly ruined it.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:51 (four years ago) link

The Hague.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 19:52 (four years ago) link

i have probably seen New Order around 10 - 12 times and all with Peter Hook. like others have said they are an ok band live, but it's not like seeing Depeche Mode or the Cure where it's an event. anyways, my friends really want me to go so i'm probably going and looking forward to seeing Pet Shop Boys for the first time.

from what I've seen of the Brotherhood clips on YouTube from this era, Sumner acquits himself okay?

think I saw New Order in the 80s live more than any other band

thanks for posting the images Bee OK! I didn't vote in this but I like the results

I love the early New Order live recordings/clips, where Barney looked like he (and the rest of them) wanted to be anywhere else but there, like the 1983 TOTP performance:

two years pass...

Anyone else going to the Hollywood Bowl shows this year?

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 19 April 2022 16:52 (one year ago) link

well, Sumner's had COVID twice, so maybe he has immunity.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 April 2022 16:53 (one year ago) link

They've postponed twice already, once in 2020 and once in 2021. Fingers crossed for this time.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 19 April 2022 16:54 (one year ago) link

I think they have always been a very uneven band live. The first time I saw them was in 1985. They were simply brilliant, one of the three best shows I've ever seen. This is almost a perfect setlist:

New Order, August 16, 1985, Rainbow Music Hall, Denver, CO

Sunrise
This Time of Night
Hurt
Thieves Like Us
5 8 6
Everything's Gone Green
The Village
Subculture
Denial
Confusion
The Perfect Kiss

Encore:
Ceremony
Blue Monday

Encore 2:
Temptation

Saw them again the following year, and they were shit. Completely phoning it in. I almost took it personally.

I had tickets for the original Hollywood Bowl dates in 2020, not sure if I'm going to still go. I feel like I have seen them enough times now.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 19 April 2022 18:57 (one year ago) link

I'm still planning to go. Also planning to see Peter Hook and the Light in June. Hoping I won't be too depressed by either event.
