the manuel and ax characters are used to portray the archetypal brotherhood/bro-dom exaggerated to absurdity. despite appearing as guitar center dwelling douchebags and being hired guns, manuel is still willling to give the skin off his ass for tim— and ax his hand! even through all the ups and downs of their relationships, they still say they'd be willing to do anything for tim, which is why i think ax eventually showed up at the end of the oscar special. at this point in their character development, they're that dumb kind of loyal like a dog. and they're some of my favorite characters because of it

Still haven't seen more than the first twenty minutes thanks to a variety of other distractions but I do want to point out that Tim appeared very close to breaking when Gregg was slowly pulling his car in and honking incessantly.

he certainly cracked up more this year, especially the first hour or so

I wouldn't be surprised if he did meet them at Guitar Center: IIRC, Axiom and Manuel are in a real band together (Last Second Chance), and that is their IRL look/style.

My read is that he sincerely loves Toni (or at least thinks he does) but he just can’t stop scheming and using people and chasing the next shiny thing.

Yeah, the musicians on the last couple Oscar specials have come closest to puncturing the illusion. One of the dudes from last year's kinda drove me nuts with his excessively-hammy 'I'M LIKE SO SCARED OF TIM RIGHT NOW!' mugging.

I feel like Tim & co. would probably take great pains to let the musicians and impersonators know what's up ahead of time. Like, he's not gonna start vehemently abusing people who don't know he's just fucking around.

Unless he's legitimately hoping to get a rap in the mouth as extra seasoning.
