I also appreciate that Tim's Twitter feed is like half him and half his character, and it's likely confusing if you don't know what's going on.
― Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link
in some interview he mentioned that when filming Decker they deliberately put the cue cards very far away
― frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link
I voted for Mindhunter. It's very good. Which is kinda how I feel about pretty much everything Fincher. I watch it and I think, 'that was very good' and that's about it. I don't really think of it as a flaw but there isn't much about his work that stimulates discussion for me.

of course as good as he is I still think Special Agent Kington, the "Master of Codes" is one of the funniest things ever, especially considering exactly how that character came to be
― frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:22 (four years ago) link
Yes, I wish I'd known where the Master of Codes came from before starting Decker.
It's really the most impenetrable thing, even more than Best Show, but so hilariously worth it.
― Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:24 (four years ago) link
It took me waaaaaaaay too long to notice TurKington was aping the HeiDecker naming convention. Waaaaaaaaaay too long.

Haven't watched S2 of Mindhunter yet so didn't vote for it. S1 was pretty good
― groovypanda, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:25 (four years ago) link
I watched the first series of Decker without even knowing what On Cinema was so seeing the ep where Tim tricks Gregg into appearing on the show was a huge "holy shit" moment for me
― frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:25 (four years ago) link
as much as the first episode of on cinema doesn't really imply how truly cracked it gets, it contains one of my favorite jokes in the series, gregg turkington saying john goodman should be renamed john greatman because of his performance in flight

― imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:26 (four years ago) link
Unless my Buzzfeed Youtubes amazingly caught fire with the ILX hivemind, I think my only show to make the top 10 is Russian Doll.
Mindhunter is to me MOR prestige, which tbf I count basically everything besides The Wire.

We're all very familiar with Will Smith and what he's capable of. I think this is his best performance if not the best performance of the year by anyone. You've had Bicentennial Man, now you have Gemini Man and may it's flag wave forever. This is great movie and I do believe there will be a Gemini Man 2 because this is the start of a great franchise.

the first truly, truly great On Cinema moment is the Parque Jurasico popcorn classic in S2E9 imo (although there was plenty of brilliant stuff before it)

lol I liked the scene-for-scene comparison at the end of that episode where they showed Gemini Man looked exactly like an episode of Decker.
The Trial screened theatrically at BAM in New York late last year.

voted for Mindhunter, also i don't necessarily think Fincher is pulling the plug permanently especially considering the show would likely have some leaps forward in time if we're following the BTK story, and i imagine with his clout and apparent loyalty to the show he's just taking some time off to work on other things and allow the other actors to work as well.

i think S1 of Mindhunter reached some highs that S2 fell just shy of in several ways but it was still great.

That's a good point about the time jumps, seeing the actors released from their contracts is just kind of an ominous headline.

fuck this union-busting creep btw
On Cinema's prescience crosses over to Decker in that the alternating squinting / open-pursed lips acting range is exactly exactly Trump's childlike notion of performative toughness definitely disagree with Mr America as a capsule summary of On Cinema for newbie btw, though it probably works fine as a tiny weird stand-alone I lost interest in Killing Eve pretty early on in s1 and no one seemed to think s2 was an improvement

How does this compare to the film (which I liked)
β imago, Saturday, February 15, 2020 6:14 AM (forty minutes ago)
it's astounding how well it compares to the film. it's not quite as great, but keeps the tone perfectly, doesn't exhaust the premises, invents loads of great new wrinkles to the set-up and even to modern vampirism, and even manages to preserve a touch of the charming parochialism of the original despite being set in NYC.
