the joker strikes again!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:09 (four years ago) link

I’ve never been a huge Tim & Eric fan but love On Cinema.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:10 (four years ago) link

Haven't seen this year's On Cinema Oscar special yet, but the denouement of the last several have been spectacular, and last year's was possibly the most harrowing and unnerving thing I've seen in a while. Particularly for something that was also hilarious (see: Tim's all-time performance of 'Bohemian Rhapsody').

ol, they outdid themselves (again) this year

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:11 (four years ago) link

thought this season was a step back in a lot of ways but it's still very watchable.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:11 (four years ago) link

I'm pissed at Fincher for pulling the plug on Mindhunter.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:12 (four years ago) link

clear the decks for the basic crowdpleasers :P

mindhunter s2 was WAY better than s1 imho

btw if you aren't willing to jump into On Cinema you should at least check out Decker, I'm also impressed with how well Tim's able to capture that sort of ineptness without overtly doing that tired sort of "so bad it's good" humor we see everywhere now

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:13 (four years ago) link

Let's put it this way: if I wasn't relatively certain that the performer Tim Heidecker was a relatively sane and stable and functional person, the character of Tim Heidecker would make me very concerned for the safety and well-being of everyone in his orbit.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

idk i liked the scenes with the inmates more and didnt really care about Holts kids storyline that much.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

you all better have voted for itysl

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:15 (four years ago) link

Decker was my intro to On Cinema (for those who don't know it's an incompetent action spin-off series created by Tim's character). But the Mr America movie is on Hulu now and might be a good capsule summary.

tim's deliberately shitty acting was on display for the last bit they did in the tim & eric live show they're touring right now, and god, i love it so much. the way he fucks up a line and then fucks it up way more by trying to correct himself... exquisite

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:15 (four years ago) link

ive read all your posts about on cinema and watched some of that youtube link posted above but i still have no clue what's going on. may need to start from scratch on it.

I liked that Holt's day-job provided absolutely no assistance with the difficulties presented in his home life, a nice indication of just how impotent they are overall

Heidecker has said something to the effect that he has a tendency to trip over lines as a matter of course and that Decker is just a matter of really leaning hard into that tendency.

start from the first season! (skip the podcast, and also you can skip most of the outside interviews, only tim and gregg's appearances on the best show are really worth it) it's kind of boring! but just keep plowing through! do not miss out on the oscar specials, even though they are 3-4 hours long. when you get to the trial it's the greatest payoff. this is the playlist i used http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRT5PdjVF-ipL5SPXbmZXzfBchXVR8JTo

I also appreciate that Tim's Twitter feed is like half him and half his character, and it's likely confusing if you don't know what's going on.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link

in some interview he mentioned that when filming Decker they deliberately put the cue cards very far away

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link

I voted for Mindhunter. It's very good. Which is kinda how I feel about pretty much everything Fincher. I watch it and I think, 'that was very good' and that's about it. I don't really think of it as a flaw but there isn't much about his work that stimulates discussion for me.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:21 (four years ago) link

of course as good as he is I still think Special Agent Kington, the "Master of Codes" is one of the funniest things ever, especially considering exactly how that character came to be

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:22 (four years ago) link

Yes, I wish I'd known where the Master of Codes came from before starting Decker.

It's really the most impenetrable thing, even more than Best Show, but so hilariously worth it.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:24 (four years ago) link

It took me waaaaaaaay too long to notice TurKington was aping the HeiDecker naming convention. Waaaaaaaaaay too long.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:24 (four years ago) link

Haven't watched S2 of Mindhunter yet so didn't vote for it. S1 was pretty good

groovypanda, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:25 (four years ago) link

I watched the first series of Decker without even knowing what On Cinema was so seeing the ep where Tim tricks Gregg into appearing on the show was a huge "holy shit" moment for me

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:25 (four years ago) link

as much as the first episode of on cinema doesn't really imply how truly cracked it gets, it contains one of my favorite jokes in the series, gregg turkington saying john goodman should be renamed john greatman because of his performance in flight

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:26 (four years ago) link

what is our real #9 btw

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:26 (four years ago) link

Unless my Buzzfeed Youtubes amazingly caught fire with the ILX hivemind, I think my only show to make the top 10 is Russian Doll.

Mindhunter is to me MOR prestige, which tbf I count basically everything besides The Wire.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:27 (four years ago) link

for the moment, if i can get you nerds' attention with some SERIOUS DRAMA

still think the funniest line is "If you'd seen the movie, you'd know that it's an animated film about a squirrel."

xpost Haaaa, I was just thinking about the Nut Job review, which I think features Tim's first ever freak-out.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:30 (four years ago) link

We're all very familiar with Will Smith and what he's capable of. I think this is his best performance if not the best performance of the year by anyone. You've had Bicentennial Man, now you have Gemini Man and may it's flag wave forever. This is great movie and I do believe there will be a Gemini Man 2 because this is the start of a great franchise.

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:31 (four years ago) link

that post being right underneath the images of Chernobyl is ilx fate at its finest

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:31 (four years ago) link

Chernobyl was gripping but the accents were weird and the first half was much stronger than the second

groovypanda, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:35 (four years ago) link

the first truly, truly great On Cinema moment is the Parque Jurasico popcorn classic in S2E9 imo (although there was plenty of brilliant stuff before it)

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:36 (four years ago) link

The Trial may be the greatest piece of the On Cinema canon.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:37 (four years ago) link

well yeah

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:38 (four years ago) link

lol I liked the scene-for-scene comparison at the end of that episode where they showed Gemini Man looked exactly like an episode of Decker.

The Trial screened theatrically at BAM in New York late last year.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:38 (four years ago) link

voted for Mindhunter, also i don't necessarily think Fincher is pulling the plug permanently especially considering the show would likely have some leaps forward in time if we're following the BTK story, and i imagine with his clout and apparent loyalty to the show he's just taking some time off to work on other things and allow the other actors to work as well.

omar little, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:39 (four years ago) link

xp No wait it was Museum of the Moving Image

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:39 (four years ago) link

"What do you think your daughter would say if she were with us today?"

"Objection! Uh....speculation"

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:39 (four years ago) link

i wanted to go to that but couldn't imagine spending 4.5 hours in a theater xp

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:40 (four years ago) link

i think S1 of Mindhunter reached some highs that S2 fell just shy of in several ways but it was still great.
