Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:53 (four years ago) link

i like rewatching the entirety of joe pera about once every four months; don't think i've done that with a show since eric andre.

lol, I was halfway through your sentence and thought, 'yeah, like I do with Eric Andre'.

on cinema: the greatest long-form comedy series of all time

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:53 (four years ago) link

i really love joe pera. if corporate is who i am then joe pera is who i aspire to be. so strange and funny and heartfelt.

i also really love succession. great acting but more importantly probably the funniest show on tv.

is that the dude from Faxed Head?

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:54 (four years ago) link

On Cinema is the definitive parody of Trumpian politics thus far and also maybe of toxic nerd culture.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:55 (four years ago) link

TOO LOW

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:56 (four years ago) link

yeah I mention it over and over in the thread but I feel like it's the one series that really captures those things in a way that's actually funny.

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:57 (four years ago) link

On Cinema is perfect in every way, but season 11 isn’t the most representative of the heights it can reach

tangenttangent, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:57 (four years ago) link

still waiting for the newest Oscar Special to find its way onto Youtube; please YSI etc etc

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:58 (four years ago) link

I really can't think of anyone in America has nailed the Trump mindset - the ugly and bizarre grievances and shameless behavior - like Tim Heidecker with his character here. So many other comedians seem to be hopelessly fumbling or doing surface-level stuff.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:59 (four years ago) link

more evidence old lunch and i am the same person

i sort of agree but "on cinema on defense" and "mt btl 3.0" were series highpoints

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:00 (four years ago) link

"the dude from Faxed Head" did a book signing in London and it was epic and we were there and now we have the On Cinema book

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:00 (four years ago) link

I'm stoked for Beef House

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:00 (four years ago) link

have you heard that band though, imago? you might like it.

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:01 (four years ago) link

I honestly don’t know why Empty Bottle in any of its incarnations hasn’t made it to an EOY poll yet.

tangenttangent, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:01 (four years ago) link

it's a Chicago thing idk

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:01 (four years ago) link

The ending of this year's Oscar special is stunning.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:01 (four years ago) link

the best bit about Tim's character is that it pre-dates Trump's political run; it tunes into something much more widespread than merely Trump, in the same way that Gregg's character tunes into something brilliantly specific that any self-respecting nerd will identify

oh shit yeah Empty Bottle 3.0 why didn't we vote for it :(((

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:02 (four years ago) link

no oscar special spoilers or ban

Will check out Faxed Head of course, they're Patton-aligned kinda?

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:02 (four years ago) link

yeah the end of "mt btl 3.0" where LaRue is just pointing his gun into crowds is like the funniest thing I've ever seen

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:02 (four years ago) link

Thoughts on the top five?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:03 (four years ago) link

btw I was seriously on edge during the season finale because I really thought Tim was about to blow Toni's head off

the reveal that there actually was a bullet in the chamber was so good

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:03 (four years ago) link

btw terri parks is a total genius and a really welcome addition to the on cinema family

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:05 (four years ago) link

Faxed Head included: Gregg T, Trey from Mr. Bungle, etc., and the main dude from Caroliner (though he got kicked out of the band at one point, and when we did the Faxed Head reunion show in 2013, that dude was kinda-sorta banned from the show on request from the other Faxed Heads).

it's a weirdly prescient show; the Electric Sun stuff predated the Fyre Festival docs and the vaping death storylines was years before that actually happened. not to mention that recent Elon Musk EDM single which is pretty much exactly DKR

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:06 (four years ago) link

On Cinema is...very hard to recommend. Because it's less a show than it is an experience, something you have to immerse yourself in completely to fully appreciate. As noted in the dedicated thread, I (like my T&E-loving friends who, as far as I know, still haven't taken the plunge) for the longest time was a little skeptical and kinda thought this was some ephemeral, mildly-amusing Heidecker side project that I could safely skip. But then I finally jumped into the heart of darkness with both feet last year and boy oh boy am I ever glad that I did.

I’ve never been a huge Tim & Eric fan but love On Cinema.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:10 (four years ago) link

Haven't seen this year's On Cinema Oscar special yet, but the denouement of the last several have been spectacular, and last year's was possibly the most harrowing and unnerving thing I've seen in a while. Particularly for something that was also hilarious (see: Tim's all-time performance of 'Bohemian Rhapsody').

ol, they outdid themselves (again) this year

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:11 (four years ago) link

thought this season was a step back in a lot of ways but it's still very watchable.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:11 (four years ago) link

I'm pissed at Fincher for pulling the plug on Mindhunter.

mindhunter s2 was WAY better than s1 imho

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:13 (four years ago) link

btw if you aren't willing to jump into On Cinema you should at least check out Decker, I'm also impressed with how well Tim's able to capture that sort of ineptness without overtly doing that tired sort of "so bad it's good" humor we see everywhere now

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 20:13 (four years ago) link

Let's put it this way: if I wasn't relatively certain that the performer Tim Heidecker was a relatively sane and stable and functional person, the character of Tim Heidecker would make me very concerned for the safety and well-being of everyone in his orbit.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

idk i liked the scenes with the inmates more and didnt really care about Holts kids storyline that much.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

you all better have voted for itysl

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:15 (four years ago) link

Decker was my intro to On Cinema (for those who don't know it's an incompetent action spin-off series created by Tim's character). But the Mr America movie is on Hulu now and might be a good capsule summary.

tim's deliberately shitty acting was on display for the last bit they did in the tim & eric live show they're touring right now, and god, i love it so much. the way he fucks up a line and then fucks it up way more by trying to correct himself... exquisite

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:15 (four years ago) link

ive read all your posts about on cinema and watched some of that youtube link posted above but i still have no clue what's going on. may need to start from scratch on it.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:16 (four years ago) link

I liked that Holt's day-job provided absolutely no assistance with the difficulties presented in his home life, a nice indication of just how impotent they are overall

I had a harder time w. the doc's plot

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 14 February 2020 20:17 (four years ago) link

Heidecker has said something to the effect that he has a tendency to trip over lines as a matter of course and that Decker is just a matter of really leaning hard into that tendency.
