I bailed on Mr. Robot after the second season and again after the third season, but I guess I'm in a decent position to see how it recovers.

Joe Pera is the best but I didn't vote for it because S1 was 2018 and we in the UK don't seem to have permission to view S2 yet

amazing show

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:31 (four years ago) link

i don't even know what it is, and I am very much okay with that.

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:31 (four years ago) link

sigh it is joe Pera talks WITH you and that distinction from to you is extremely important!

Yeah, never heard of it. Is S1still available in UK anywhere or will I have to torrent?

can't believe pimple popper beat Baby Yoda

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:33 (four years ago) link

As for Schitt's Creek, it is the show which all of my early-teenage tutees have been recommending I see, which has probably hardened me against it a little unfairly. Will probably check it out now

Joe Pera Talks to You is the show that your sweetest, most contemplative grand-relative would make. Now imagine your grand-relative is in his 30s.

I watched one episode of Pimple Poppper and it was utterly thrilling, I probably could've voted for it just on principle.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:34 (four years ago) link

doc pimp pop really placed this high?

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:35 (four years ago) link

Joe Pera way too low. Shoulda been #1 by a mile

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:36 (four years ago) link

the Milwaukee episode of Joe Pera was so much fun b/c I've spent a lot of time in those exact locations. and I also come from a pretty small town so I kinda go through the same emotions

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:36 (four years ago) link

anyways joe pera was my number one and I almost love it too much to talk evenly about. the bean arch, you know. singing on the first day of school. a show about the smallest pleasures writ very large and the greatest tragedies writ just as they are in the sense that these things happen. I’m glad I live in a world that is shred with joe

Clay, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:37 (four years ago) link

shared but shred is also fine

Schitt's Creek and Joe Pera are the only ones I voted for that I feel strongly inclined to evangelize in favor of. They're like 'best of decade'-level picks.

(Oh and The OA but there's no chance it'll show up at this point and everyone who isn't onboard already is just gonna point and laugh like they always do at beautiful things they don't understand.)

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:38 (four years ago) link

i love that Joe Pera and the show it tied with are both so very good, both so very funny and both so very different. I also like them about equally!

I recall that particular phrase a lot, for some reason.

my #2. this show is shockingly good. it has no right to be as insightful, scathing, and just darn watchable as it is.

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:40 (four years ago) link

Yeah, Schitt's may be my favorite sitcom of all time at the moment. I should try Joe Pera. (OA is all sorts of bullshit)

Yerac, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link

Succession s1 was decent but s2 leveled up bigtime

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 14 February 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link

the way the other characters interact with Joe (particularly the Melskys) really makes the show IMO - you expect him to get made fun of a lot but everyone just sort of takes him for what he is. which is pretty much how it goes in real life. it takes a lot of restraint to make a show this funny without constantly making him the butt of the joke.

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link

re: what we do in the shadows

the lead actors are all hilarious, especially matt berry, and funny in a way that's distinct from the original trio.

as in every show matt berry is involved in matt berry plays matt berry, i'm not a huge fan of his but he fits pretty well in here. it's kind of funny that he's the only one who doesn't bother doing a wampire accent.

it helps that they give him all the best lines.

Joe Pera is the kind of heartfelt and strange series protagonist you almost never see. Almost like Dale Cooper.

Chris L, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:46 (four years ago) link

Also Conner O'Malley as the doofus neighbor is hilarious.

good post otm. i almost dont want to talk about this show cos its too special to me and i dont want to be overly sappy about it. i watch every new episode multiple times in a row at this point. frogbs otm about it too.

Everything that's placed so far has been either something I've seen and voted for, or haven't seen. Of the shows I haven't seen, everything is either, "Fuck, I've been meaning to watch this!" or "I am so not gonna watch this." Nothing in between.

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:50 (four years ago) link

I don't know where else you'd put it but I feel like Joe Pera airing on Adult Swim might really give people the wrong impression. Like it's almost as sincere and guileless a show as I've ever seen.

yah i dont frame it as a comedy at all anymore when trying to convince someone else to watch it

i like rewatching the entirety of joe pera about once every four months; don't think i've done that with a show since eric andre.

also I love how wide a latitude you have to give the show. there's an entire episode of him going through his grocery store routine and all of the sudden you get Sue complaining about Mike eating rotisserie chickens in the shower because of some Joe Rogan diet. or the one episode where he randomly brings up Dragonball Z

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:52 (four years ago) link

i really love joe pera. if corporate is who i am then joe pera is who i aspire to be. so strange and funny and heartfelt.

i also really love succession. great acting but more importantly probably the funniest show on tv.

On Cinema is the definitive parody of Trumpian politics thus far and also maybe of toxic nerd culture.

TOO LOW

imago, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:56 (four years ago) link

yeah I mention it over and over in the thread but I feel like it's the one series that really captures those things in a way that's actually funny.

frogbs, Friday, 14 February 2020 19:57 (four years ago) link

On Cinema is perfect in every way, but season 11 isn’t the most representative of the heights it can reach
