I'll tell you what I love about Beatles For Sale - the timpani on Every Little Thing. That's some good timpani there.

I've been listening to the Beatles a bunch lately for the first time in years and was thinking abt the block I often run into. The melodies are so indelible on a seven or eight year old's brain, you grow up with that + the fact that the vocals are so high in the mix, hearing the band on the other side of that is sometimes a challenge. What a fucking great rock band. I mean duh, but.

got to get you into my life is so good lol

Baby's in Black is the best song about losing a lover to Jesus ever written

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:10 (four years ago) link

Pure cringe for me – sounds utterly forced and dumb.

Anyway, my dad listened to quite a bit of classic pop/rock while I was growing up but never The Beatles, so that may well have rubbed off on me.

Then again, they had such a catholic reach stylistically speaking that it's not hard to grasp why a segment of their listeners might love some of their songs and be put off by others. I'm surprised this is such a challop tbh.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:13 (four years ago) link

do you like the EWF version?

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:15 (four years ago) link

A bit more, yeah. Still not a fave tho.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:16 (four years ago) link

I'd rather listen to The Monkees tbh

i would delete the entire beatles catalog if it meant there would never again be an ilx conversation about which beatles songs are bad

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:44 (four years ago) link

lol fwiw this is the first time I've partaken in such a conversation and I can't recall any other in the not-too-distant past.

you know what's a good Beatles song? most of them

some people love them, some people hate them, but we can all agree on one thing...everybody loves The Beatles

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:47 (four years ago) link

i really like the beatles but don't like any beatles album all the way through. i would have to lose half the songs on the white album and abbey road to get rid of all the songs i dislike or am indifferent to for instance

is this uncommon?

frederik b. godt (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:47 (four years ago) link

the beatles aren't even a fucking choice in this poll!

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:48 (four years ago) link

How do you feel about The Beatles's discography, Brad?

TS: "Randy Scouse Git" vs the entire Beatles discography

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:05 (four years ago) link

"Auntie Grizelda" would be a tougher choice imo

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:06 (four years ago) link

This is really a poll of: Is Joy Division a great band? ... because they are the most consistent, largely because their discography is pretty limited. Like, I think one of the only well-known bands I'd vote for over Joy Division in this category would be X-Ray Spex, who released even less material.

sarahell, Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:14 (four years ago) link

I feel kind of bad singling out D'Angelo and Portishead for the same reasons. Three albums isn't much to work with compared to most of the others.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:16 (four years ago) link

Don't feel bad about that. Only feel bad if you are redundantly discussing the Beatles and how supposedly everyone thinks they are great.

sarahell, Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:18 (four years ago) link

What are your thoughts on The Beatles' discography, sarahell? Do you think it great?

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:20 (four years ago) link

they have some songs that are good. I have not listened to all of them. I would say the Beatles are on par with Wham and Sade.

sarahell, Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:24 (four years ago) link

Wham nowhere near as good as Wham!!

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:29 (four years ago) link

the Beatles are definitely better than Joy Division. Most bands are better than Joy Division tbh

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:29 (four years ago) link

lol, I didn't think people would seriously take the bait and ruin this thread with Beatles discussion, guess I forgot where I was.

PS, Dan is correct, the Monkees are where it's truly at.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:47 (four years ago) link

xp kinda waiting for all the Beatles to be dead tbh

sarahell, Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:48 (four years ago) link

Steely Dan would have been a great shout without the reunion stuff.

The Beatles peaked between 1965-1968 IMO - the stuff at the start and end is less essential.

aphoristical, Friday, 14 February 2020 00:07 (four years ago) link

I feel like in a way the stuff at the start is actually the most essential.

lol, I didn't think people would seriously take the bait and ruin this thread with Beatles discussion,

I was surprised at the glaring omission, especially since they were nominated at the top of the other thread. But yeah.

Deflatormouse, Friday, 14 February 2020 00:15 (four years ago) link

It's my fault, because I seconded the Beatles in the OG thread and then was shot down pretty quickly by Οὖτις & rushomancy...

If someone (not me) wants to rerun the poll with a Beatles option, I'm fine w/ that

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 14 February 2020 00:20 (four years ago) link

imo the results will be more interesting without the freakin' beatles

Todd Phillips, party auteur (Noodle Vague), Friday, 14 February 2020 01:01 (four years ago) link

Whiney, you are a hero for omitting the Beatles!

sarahell, Friday, 14 February 2020 02:58 (four years ago) link

I will vote for Sun Ra for the same reasons I would vote for The Fall - a brilliant long labyrinth of a career with many trick mirrors and blind alleys and discovery after blindingly brilliant discovery. I love that Young Marble Giants record too but comparing some of these bands 1-2-3 albums long life span with someone with an exceedingly extensive catalog like Sun Ra seems a little silly.

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Friday, 14 February 2020 03:16 (four years ago) link

Hey all I said in the of thread was that the Beatles have some bad songs!

Which they do

Οὖτις, Friday, 14 February 2020 03:24 (four years ago) link

― frederik b. godt (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:47 (yesterday) link

This not only isn't uncommon but is utterly universal. However, there will forever be fervent disagreement as to which half of the songs on the White Album and Abbey Road and every other Fabs album should be binned.... which is why i still find beatles discussions interesting after all these years. Cause once you correctly prune the annoying stuff from their discography, the rest of it is so fcuking great....

Lee626, Friday, 14 February 2020 03:49 (four years ago) link

CCR or Led Zeppelin from the list, but I'd give the Velvet Underground a pass on Squeeze and vote for them instead.

clemenza, Friday, 14 February 2020 03:55 (four years ago) link

Came down to D'Angelo and Fugazi for me, but I've never liked 'The Argument' so D'Angelo it is.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 February 2020 03:59 (four years ago) link

Bands with small discographies have a lower degree of difficulty - in that group I'd go with Portishead. For the extensive discography, higher degree of difficulty, my vote goes to Low

that's not my post, Friday, 14 February 2020 04:02 (four years ago) link

Anyway, where's the Velvet Underground? Consistently strong albums from start to finish, enough good outtakes/oddities to make another strong album or two, no obvious clunkers. Unless you count Squeeze...

Lee626, Friday, 14 February 2020 04:08 (four years ago) link

^exactly wut I said on the other thread... putting Squeeze aside, and some of the tracks on Another View, pretty much every song they recorded is classic.

You have seen the heavy groups (morrisp), Friday, 14 February 2020 04:42 (four years ago) link

idg how Wham is on this list.

I know we don't require spotlist discographies, but the deep cuts on Make It Big are boring and forgettable.

"Credit Card Baby", lolol.

Nirvana maybe close second because even when I got the boxed set with all kinds of b-sides and early versions I loved all that shit too and all of the studio albums and Incesticide, the live albums, like....I drank all things Nirvana and still do

sorry for butt rockin (Neanderthal), Friday, 14 February 2020 04:49 (four years ago) link

In the end, I voted for Smiths, The. Even though their singer was that guy.
