Anyhow, I am gently glad that they are ribbingly absent from this list. While we're at it, I also have a request for the mods: could you please remove the following options? They have no business being here.

Big Star
Big Thief
Broadcast
Cocteau Twins
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Deftones
Ghost (Japan)
Hüsker Dü
Low
Oneohtrix Point Never
Pet Shop Boys
Saint Etienne
Smiths, The
Steely Dan
Stereolab
Wham!
Young Marble Giants

Thank you.

I also find it charming in a "crowd of people repeating the non-conformist oath" way

^IMO, a key part of policing the Beatles mythology is insisting that any questioning of their greatness is simply a show of performative iconoclasm, and not a genuine musical opinion.

just to spite pom's post, and also because it's correct, I voted for Deftones

Y'know, someone should start a thread about the Beatles so we can really hash this thing out. Kinda weird it hasn't happened before now!

I haven’t followed this thread but dang, Beatles For Sale is the best Beatles album

I used to pretend that Revolver was one of my all-time favourite albums when I was younger for the critical and general human cred it tends to bestow but the fact of the matter is that only half of it is any kind of good. That's what, 17 minutes in all?

heh well for my part I totally respect people hating on certain songs (there's definitely songs I don't like), silly blanket statements about how "overrated" they are or whatever are a different matter

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:56 (four years ago) link

For the record, Simon, I like the Deftones. They're just not the most reliable of bands ime.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:56 (four years ago) link

Well they're overrated insofar as they have no single great album. Taken as a whole, however, they are certainly a canonical force to be reckoned with.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:57 (four years ago) link

you have strange opinions, but ok

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:57 (four years ago) link

all their albums are canonically great, in my headcanon

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:58 (four years ago) link

Take Revolver, for example. 'Yellow Submarine', 'Good Day Sunshine', 'Doctor Robert' and 'Got to Get You Into My Life' all suck.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:00 (four years ago) link

'Getting Better', 'Fixing a Hole', Lovely Rita' and 'Good Morning Good Morning' make me cringe whenever I listen to Sgt. Pepper.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:01 (four years ago) link

middle-eight breakdown in Doctor Robert is fucking incredible

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:01 (four years ago) link

glad this is turning into a Beatles thread tho lol

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:01 (four years ago) link

was gonna say, Dr Robert is badass!

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link

Was going to argue with several of those choices, but what's the fucking point?

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link

Ok I'll grant you 'Doctor Robert', it's definitely the one I dislike the least out of that lot.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link

Good Morning, Good Morning has so many awesome details - the dropped beats, bizarre horn arrangement, animals eating each other, stinging guitar solo. Classic.

(I agree this is pointless)

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link

I recently started loving "Another Girl" based on Paul's fabulous lead guitar part. They were good!

I'll tell you what I love about Beatles For Sale - the timpani on Every Little Thing. That's some good timpani there.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:06 (four years ago) link

I've been listening to the Beatles a bunch lately for the first time in years and was thinking abt the block I often run into. The melodies are so indelible on a seven or eight year old's brain, you grow up with that + the fact that the vocals are so high in the mix, hearing the band on the other side of that is sometimes a challenge. What a fucking great rock band. I mean duh, but.

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:09 (four years ago) link

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:10 (four years ago) link

Pure cringe for me – sounds utterly forced and dumb.

Anyway, my dad listened to quite a bit of classic pop/rock while I was growing up but never The Beatles, so that may well have rubbed off on me.

xp

Then again, they had such a catholic reach stylistically speaking that it's not hard to grasp why a segment of their listeners might love some of their songs and be put off by others. I'm surprised this is such a challop tbh.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:13 (four years ago) link

lol fwiw this is the first time I've partaken in such a conversation and I can't recall any other in the not-too-distant past.

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:47 (four years ago) link

i really like the beatles but don't like any beatles album all the way through. i would have to lose half the songs on the white album and abbey road to get rid of all the songs i dislike or am indifferent to for instance

is this uncommon?

frederik b. godt (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:47 (four years ago) link

the beatles aren't even a fucking choice in this poll!

This is really a poll of: Is Joy Division a great band? ... because they are the most consistent, largely because their discography is pretty limited. Like, I think one of the only well-known bands I'd vote for over Joy Division in this category would be X-Ray Spex, who released even less material.

sarahell, Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:14 (four years ago) link

I feel kind of bad singling out D'Angelo and Portishead for the same reasons. Three albums isn't much to work with compared to most of the others.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:16 (four years ago) link

Don't feel bad about that. Only feel bad if you are redundantly discussing the Beatles and how supposedly everyone thinks they are great.

sarahell, Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:18 (four years ago) link

What are your thoughts on The Beatles' discography, sarahell? Do you think it great?

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:20 (four years ago) link

they have some songs that are good. I have not listened to all of them. I would say the Beatles are on par with Wham and Sade.

sarahell, Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:24 (four years ago) link

Wham nowhere near as good as Wham!!

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 13 February 2020 22:29 (four years ago) link

the Beatles are definitely better than Joy Division. Most bands are better than Joy Division tbh
