Wham! is more like a band with one good song

everything she wants?

Careless Whispers

Haha oh wait

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link

Ok, no good songs!

great wham! songs: "everything she wants," "freedom," "careless whisper," "i'm your man," "the edge of heaven," "club tropicana," "heartbeat," "wake me up," "a different corner," "last christmas"

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:43 (four years ago) link

but yeah no idea why wham! is here

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:44 (four years ago) link

oh for fuck's sake

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:44 (four years ago) link

if you're gonna do it do it right

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:45 (four years ago) link

Huh you can Alfred? There's a bunch of artists etc who don't flat out annoy me ever. Just sticking to this group polled here, I can't think of any Fela or Sade I'm annoyed by. Ho hum is my worst reaction to any song of theirs.

― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger),

Yeah, see, this is a weird statement with which I've no empathy. I can't think of a single artist who hasn't annoyed me or hasn't released mediocre work, and that's a good thing. One of the nominees here said best: "Looking for love in a looking-glass world/Is pretty hard for you."

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:45 (four years ago) link

George Michael's singing range is right in sync with mine so I love to tear up a karaoke stage with a rousing rendition of 'Oh For Fuck's Sake'.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link

If we're going to stick to a strict set of criteria, I've never heard anything egregiously bad by:

D'Angelo
Death
Gorguts
John Coltrane
Nina Nastasia
Portishead
Stars of the Lid

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link

may vote Wham! to annoy Shakey tbh

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link

hasn't annoyed me: yes
hasn't released mediocre work: no

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link

deftones have released at least one song that annoys me so i'm sympathetic with alfred here

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 February 2020 19:54 (four years ago) link

Cocteau Twins did a Fruitopia commercial, does that count

Yep.

Deflatormouse, Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:07 (four years ago) link

Not that it matters since plenty of other bands listed suffer from the same problem but The Beatles were nothing if not inconsistent.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:09 (four years ago) link

Even their best albums have at least a couple of songs that genuinely suck.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:09 (four years ago) link

Inconsistent at being imperfect, I think u mean.

great wham! songs: "everything she wants," "freedom," "careless whisper," "i'm your man," "the edge of heaven," "club tropicana," "heartbeat," "wake me up," "a different corner," "last christmas"

some amazing album tracks and b-sides too, especially 'Nothing Looks The Same In The Light' and 'Blue'

ymo sumac (NickB), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:10 (four years ago) link

And why would we discount With The Beatles or Beatles for Sale, both which I hope never to revisit.

As if on cue, my iPod delivers up a song by Charlotte Hatherley (likely my favorite musical artist of the 21st Century) that frankly kinda annoys the living eff out of me. It really is a thing, I'm afraid.

People only hate on the Beatles because we all know it's all just gentle ribbing, and the indisputable best band of all time can take it.

'Gentle ribbing', you say.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:46 (four years ago) link

The Beatles are a great band with lots of excellent songs but about 30-40% of their material could be easily excised from their discography and nothing of value would be lost.

I've gone on record a number of times in declaring that the Beatles, with Sgt. Pepper, released maybe like the 50th best album of 1967, so, y'know.

Indisputable.

Sammo Hazuki's Tago Mago Cantina (Old Lunch), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:48 (four years ago) link

if we're gonna go down this road (again) we may as well un-ban Turrican and get some real fireworks goin

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:49 (four years ago) link

Anyhow, I am gently glad that they are ribbingly absent from this list. While we're at it, I also have a request for the mods: could you please remove the following options? They have no business being here.

Big Star
Big Thief
Broadcast
Cocteau Twins
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Deftones
Ghost (Japan)
Hüsker Dü
Low
Oneohtrix Point Never
Pet Shop Boys
Saint Etienne
Smiths, The
Steely Dan
Stereolab
Wham!
Young Marble Giants

Thank you.

^IMO, a key part of policing the Beatles mythology is insisting that any questioning of their greatness is simply a show of performative iconoclasm, and not a genuine musical opinion.

I used to pretend that Revolver was one of my all-time favourite albums when I was younger for the critical and general human cred it tends to bestow but the fact of the matter is that only half of it is any kind of good. That's what, 17 minutes in all?

heh well for my part I totally respect people hating on certain songs (there's definitely songs I don't like), silly blanket statements about how "overrated" they are or whatever are a different matter

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:56 (four years ago) link

For the record, Simon, I like the Deftones. They're just not the most reliable of bands ime.

romanesque architect (pomenitul), Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:56 (four years ago) link

Well they're overrated insofar as they have no single great album. Taken as a whole, however, they are certainly a canonical force to be reckoned with.

Talk Talk

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Saturday, 15 February 2020 13:40 (four years ago) link

A couple of quick thoughts - I was slightly surprised not to see Slint on the list of options. I may have missed some chat about entry criteria based on number of releases, but still...

And, while delving into some chat about Autechre's NTS sessions, and particularly re the chat about whether their track 'all end' was actually the end of them releasing music (spoiler - it wasn't), I did think that if they did end there that their legacy would be, for me anyway, not far off perfect. However, given the number of live shows that they have released, and the number which I haven't listened to (spoiler - nearly all of them) , it's difficult to stand by that. I still voted for them though.

Nothing against Kraftwerk, I love those guys but can you imagine someone with true jazz chops on Electric Cafe.

Seriously though, I do love them but ~40% of their albums are of questionable flawlessness.

ref to recent Black Sabbath thread revival where calstars said Bill Ward didn’t swing enough or something

Trust me I’ve heard of Autechre for most of my adult IDM listening life and them getting the same amount of votes makes me feel even more out of touch

El Tomboto, Friday, 13 March 2020 00:52 (four years ago) link

Nina nastasia is one of the great, overlooked artists of the 2000’s. She was very prolific for awhile but dropped out of sight almost a decade ago (her last album was released in June 2010). She’s still out there playing shows and supposedly had something in the works awhile ago but haven’t heard much since. Really wonderful.
