I have had tickets to see Matthew Sweet like 4 times while in hs and college and each time something happened. Hurricane, car broke down, show canceled...still never saw him.

I also got two tickets to nirvana and smashing pumpkins in hs, then lost interest in going so I sold the tickets. didn't get the chance to see them again.

Lately I've occasionally been digging deep into setlist.fm checking out nearby venue/show histories and feeling dumb that I missed so many great bands.

Sun Ra and AMM are my two greatest regrets, also passing on Nirvana when they played Denver in summer '89

sleeve, Thursday, 13 February 2020 03:34 (four years ago) link

I was listening to local pop radio shit like Ace of Base when Kurt died, didn't become a big fan until long after he kicked it.

idk how much I can really lament it, though, it's not like my parents would have let me go and see them between ages 11 and 13. they vetoed me even buying a Nirvana shirt at fuckin' 15 because (my dad's words) "he killed himself, I don't want you celebrating him"

I passed on Kanye West at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA, must have been just before College Dropout came out. I had heard a buzz about him but apparently wasn't worth walking four blocks for. Hmffh.

Also had tix for Zep in '79, but Bonzo.

Vader is the band I seem to have bad luck with. saw them the first time I bought a ticket, second time I just came back from Atlanta and didn't have the energy to make the 90 minute drive to see them.

had a ticket last night, my back gave out 20 minutes into their set and I had to go home early like an old man and lay down.

six months pass...

Had a ticket to see the Geto Boys in 2013. For idiotic reasons that still infuriate me, I decided I wasn't really feeling a hip hop show, I opted to sell my ticket and go see Vader instead...in the same city, only miles away from the Geto Boys.

Vader put on a good show, but they tour the states all the time. Bushwick Bill is, of course, dead now :(

Neanderthal, Sunday, 6 September 2020 17:52 (three years ago) link

This is probably why the Vader bad luck referenced upthread keeps happening to me. Penance.

Also had a ticket to see a killer lineup of High on Fire, Abbath, Skeletonwitch, and Tribulation. and realized after buying it that the Breast Cancer fundraiser I was doing was the same day, and the concert had an early end time, and was 90 mins away. Had to sell it. No regrets, i just wish it had been on a diff night.

I didn't have a ticket, but I still regret not going to see Sleepytime Gorilla Museum in Minneapolis back in 2011 or so - not for any good reason, either, just being a bum. A couple years ago I visited friends who had their first real date at that show, and are now married, and mentioned how bad I felt about missing it. My friend said, "You know, I hate to say this, but you should feel bad about missing it."

i wasn't specifically going to see them, but I missed Cannibal Corpse opening for Slayer because.....(and I will preface, this was one of the greatest days of my life)...

-my best friend was moving away in a month, and I wanted to treat her to a Slayer show before she left
-on my way to drive to pick her up, my landlord/roommate's big dog bit me on the hand (this was a previously abused dog before my landlord took her in, and the landlord had barely been home in weeks, so she was hiding behind a table. I guess my attempt to pet her was looked at as aggressive...poor thing)
-got delayed a half hour as I checked my hand to make sure it hadn't broken skin, as well as notify the owner, and make sure the dog was ok before I left.
-after the fourth google of "I got bit by a dog, will I die?", I said "fuck it, I'm going to see Slayer", and drove to her place
-We were now running behind and going to our AirBNB. I wanted to get in and out fast so we could make Corpse by 6.
-We get there, friend was not thrilled with the AirBNB. I assured her it was fine, I'd stayed in it 3 times prior (completely coincidentally - including the exact room we were in!)
-It's now too late to pregame with beer in our room, when suddenly I remember there's literally a WingHouse across the street from the venue we're going to
-We decide to get shitfaced at much more affordable prices while eating wings.
-We got a little too comfy, and suddenly the clock showed 6 pm and, well....we had just ordered more beer

So yeah, we get there too late to see Corpse, which was disappointing as I wanted her to see them. So because we missed them, we went over to the picnic table area, where we immediately made new friends and

-Smoked THC thru vape with them, while getting drunker
-Another friend showed up, we smoked with her too
-Slayer came on and my friend was floating as was I
-We decided to go to an 'adult establishment', where we both did coke with one of the employees
-got back at like 3 am, where I got angry at her for playing spotify at 3 am
-both of us hung over af and feeling like death the next morning, and I had to make it home for a date

we both agree that's our favorite memory with each other.

I was supposed to go see Christian Scott at the Blue Note in NYC in March. The show was the week NYC started to shut down; it wasn't cancelled but venues were reduced to 50% capacity. I got spooked and didn't go. Happy ending, though... the gigs were recorded, and there's a live album, which I have happily purchased. (It's great, but I'm still glad I stayed home.)

Neanderthal, Sunday, 6 September 2020 20:52 (three years ago) link

I didn’t have tickets but in my final year of high school (1991) I missed shows by MBV, Neubauten and Jane’s Addiction - have seen all 3 subsequently (albeit past their respective peaks) but the regret of missing those shows has been a powerful engine fuelling all my subsequent gig-going

Sleazy from Coil/TG played his only gig in Australia one night when I happened to be visiting Melbourne, but he was on at midnight and I had a 6am flight home - in retrospect I would have made the effort!

I vaguely regret not having seen Hawkwind when they came out 10-15 years ago, and recently found out that Peter Hammill played solo shows here in 1997 - at which point I had zero interest in VDGG, so I can’t really beat myself up about not going, but still

High on Fire in like 2016 because I'd been traveling all around the country going to shows, this one was in Atlanta, and I just didn't have it in me to go, so I hung out with a friend instead.

Witch Mountain a year or two later, because I decided to go see Chicago in Tampa with my mom (it was almost the 30 year anniversary of the Chicago show my folks took me to), and didn't have it in me to drive 90 minutes to get mom home, and then another 6 to Atlanta.

My senior year in high school, a friend of mine had tickets to see Talking Heads on the Speaking in Tongues tour at Red Rocks. I turned down the invitation. To this day, I don't know why. It as about a 2.5 hour drive for us, but still.

Actually, it was probably the show in September 1982, before Speaking in Tongues came out. The only song they played from that album was Swamp.

Not really a missed concert, but a venue that has seemingly decided to miss concerts.

Anybody know the venue Furnace 41 in Georgia? They cancelled the Hypocrisy show one day out last month without explanation. Tonight they cancelled tomorrow's Suffocation show.

Neither was COVID or band-related (in fact, Suffo are playing tonight in Jacksonville). The Hypocrisy show, they emailed their ticket holders with a snotty note that said they would not be sharing any more information.

I'm not going there or anything, but I travel to Georgia now and then, just wondering if this is some weird scam venue that cancels metal shows conspiratorially

so, what exactly are typical laws in states regarding the removal of a headliner from a show? as posted in another thread, I had planned to go see Onyx in Orlando on Friday, on one of their three Florida dates. Onyx was the sole headliner, R.A. the Rugged Man was his opener.

By Sunday of this week, it appears Onyx was removed from all three Florida show dates. Ticketholders were apparently notified of the change in headliner (to R.A the Rugged Man), and given the option to keep the ticket or get a refund. However, no public announcement was made by anybody, promoter, artist, nor venue.

Even more confusing, the promoter's website STILL lists all three Florida shows as being Onyx's 30th anniversary show, but when you click the link to buy tickets, the event on Ticketweb only lists R.A the Rugged Man, and has his pic. However, the Info tab, which shows all artists performing, still has Onyx.

The venue for tonight's show (19o4 Music Hall) still listed it as being an Onyx show as of last night, only updating it this morning. There are FB events that the promoter created for both the Tampa and Jacksonville shows - both of them now only list R.A the Rugged Man in the title, but the avatar for the event is a pic of Onyx and their show poster. The body of the event has not been touched since initially created, still heavily references Onyx, and even lists set times for the show, including times for Onyx!

In fact, the local arts paper shared a FB post advertising them as performing, and I posted that they would not be there according to the venue, only to get responses from 3 people who were about to buy tix thinking that Onyx would be performing that night. so it seemed there were multiple fans under the impression they were still on, and didn't know of the change as they weren't current ticketholders.

The only way I learned of the change was context clues and two tweets by ticketholders - at first when I saw the event said R.A the Rugged Man and had his pic, that maybe I'd misunderstood who the headliner was, or it was a co-headlining tour. Once i realized that wasn't the case, I realized they'd likely been removed, and then searched on Twitter and found two tweets by ticketholders confirming exactly this. Likewise, Onyx had removed the dates from their site.

so my question is, is this legal? I know when an opening act is removed from the bill, fans aren't owed refunds and the promoter doesn't necessarily have to make a big to-do about it, or if it's a festival and a headliner doesn't perform. but in a ad hoc concert where the headliner actually changes, for ongoing sales, does the promoter actually have to make it clear that the original headliner isn't performing and has changed?

I guess it depends on the state, but I've never seen anything like this before. usually if a show has continued with a change in headliner, I've seen lots of communication on it, with the promoter announcing it on social media, also making sure to update the ticket page and any FB event page to remove all references to the act that was removed, or at least add a note that says "<act> is no longer performing, <act> will be the headliner".

it felt to me like the promoter was trying to downplay the news to avoid a marked decrease in ticket sales in the days leading up and day of show. but maybe I'm reading too much into it?

anybody ever gone to the wrong venue to see a show because you misremembered it or (worse) it was actually a venue in another state with a similar name, so you now had an unusable ticket?

I'm about to take a pretty good-sized loss on tickets to see Pavement in Iceland. Bummer to miss the show, but even bigger bummer to not have the experience of a visit to Iceland, that incredible venue, etc. (I've seen Pavement five times - three in the '90s and once each during the two reunions.)

If anyone would like a three-night pass *or* 1, 2 or 3 tickets to the July 27 show, please let me know. I will cut you a killer deal! I would *love* for my loss to spur someone else to spring for a flight and go.

Bought a ticket to see Magdalena Bay earlier this year, showing up at the curiously darkened venue to discover that the show had taken place the night before. I hadn't been feeling well so I probably would have stayed home anyway, but this was one of a handful of things this year where my mind proved fuzzier than expected about a date or time. I'm trying to be more proactive about referring to and double-checking my calendar app.

Was talking with my sister this morning, who reminded me that I missed a whole set by the Deftones at Warped Tour '98 because I was getting us Cokes at the way understaffed concession stand. Otoh, I did hear but not see a bit of Kid Rock's set on a concession stand-adjacent stage (and I only remember that because he was rapping and people were freaking out over Joe C.)

I hate when shit like that happens.

I missed 25% of Napalm Death's opening set once because I was doing a meet and greet with Slayer that ran well over time. Furthering the delay, a LiveNation security guard asked to me my ticket when I entered the pit area, despite me being told all I'd have to show was my wristband. I said "my ticket?" and she said "*I* don't know you - I haven't seen you today!", while I fished around in my pocket for it. Kind of annoyed, I said back "what's the purpose of this green wristband if I have to dig out my ticket each time" and she practically leapt into the air and started SCREAMING at me that she wasn't going to take my bullshit today.

I spent the remainder of the set trying to find someone who was willing to listen to me complain about this asshole, couldn't find anybody, and just used the other entrance the rest of the night (who didn't harass me once).

not mine, but man, feel bad for this dude: https://www.reddit.com/r/Katatonia/comments/18e6tmd/dead_end_kings_got_played_in_its_entirety_tonight/

so I learned of this from a friend I know from Atlanta, but he went to see Katatonia last night. the entire tour has pretty much had two bands on it, from what I've heard, and last night, a third was advertised last minute, called Concrete Sky. My friend often posts little synopses after each band he sees at shows, and he commented that the instrumentalists were great, but was bagging on the vocalist for being off-key, and also hated the lyrics. so Gost comes out, he likes them ok.

then the next band comes out, and he sees it's....Concrete Sky again. and he slowly realizes Katatonia had played a surprise opening set, playing the Dead End Kings album (which he didn't know), and he'd been bagging Jonas Renske's vocals! this second set was the standard set.

well I guess it wasn't clear to everyone and those that recognized Dead End Kings, well, a few of them went home early thinking they had switched the order with Gost...like this guy.

are surprise sets a thing? don't know that I've ever run into that!

STUPID CRAP FACE (Neanderthal), Saturday, 9 December 2023 22:58 (four months ago) link

the name "Concrete sky" came from a lyric on one of the songs on Dead End Kings, so even when they played they didn't reveal they were Katatonia. I guess it was the ultimate 'true fan' test. if you don't recognize this music, you're not a Katatonia fan and don't deserve to know it was us!

I mean Katatonia aren't exactly rock stars like King Diamond, I wouldn't be surprised if fans who'd never seen them live before haven't looked at pics and don't know what they look like, maybe have only looked at images of them a few times. I remember the first time I saw the Sword and saw a buncha dudes who look like the guy who fucked omar little's roommate come on stage and was like "THIS is them"?
