Joseph Shabalala, founder and director of choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo band.

RIP

Saw them on the Graceland tour, and once after

I'm sure I'll see my BFF mentioning Shabalala's death on social media; she's originally from South Africa and thought very highly of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

RIP we named our cat Shabalala after the great man.

Conrad got an early lead so maybe that's what you're remembering

Yeah, that's probably what did it. Kaplan looks like a pretty strong runner! Cool to see some of his sweat hogs congratulating him at the end. But what's up w/ Conrad? He botches the concession speech - "the best coach, the best team won...CBS...I mean, NBC"...it was ABC! Probably was a bit loopy after going all out for whatever that distance was.

henry s, Tuesday, 11 February 2020 17:49 (four years ago) link

I got a dance lesson from Joseph shabalala as a kid, remember him as being a beacon of living kindness. RIP

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link

But what's up w/ Conrad?

If you watch the clip from the beginning you'll see Conrad's upset about the results, make some off color jokes and throws a fit till they agree to a rematch.

Watching this whole thing set me down a rabbit hole of watching other battles of the network stars and which revealed that Kaplan was also good as the qb in 3 on 3 football and the kayak relay.

Paul English, Willie Nelson's long-time (and I mean LOOOOOOOOONG-time) drummer. It is amazing how long Willie kept that band together.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 12 February 2020 23:26 (four years ago) link

Yeah, just astounding. Almost fifty-five years as the drummer, a couple of years aside! Crazy.

Christie Blatchford:

http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/amp/entry/christie-blatchford-dead_ca_5e441a56c5b6d0ea3811ad5e/

I personally couldn't stand her--she was Canada's version of a Hannity or Kellyanne Conway--although being one of the first female sports journalists in the early '70s was an achievement. The Sun had far and away the best baseball coverage in the pre-internet '80s and early '90s, so I read her compulsively and said nasty things about her in year-end music ballots and letters to the editor, published and unpublished.

clemenza, Thursday, 13 February 2020 15:10 (four years ago) link

We snarked a bit about her over on the Worst National Post Columnist thread, but this was a far more reasoned and appropriate acknowledgement of her passing that still manages to convey that she was, in fact, terrible.

Lila Garrett's daughter is actress Eliza Roberts (fka Eliza Simons) who is married to actor Eric Roberts and the two Robertses are on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast this week with lotsa great anecdotes about Lila Garrett (recorded prior to her death)

Yes, the other bad Koch, Charles, still lives.

I'm not sure about the fourth of the Kochs, Bill. I think he's average Koch.

Ah fuck that's awful

babby bitter (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 15 February 2020 18:14 (four years ago) link

It's just awful. Genuinely shaken by that news. Was just chatting this afternoon about the trivial bit of shite doled out to me when I was on a TV show and how it disproportionately affected me. Was also talking about Gail Porter's tremendously affecting documentary about struggling to stay afloat in the public eye when all of your private issues become public property. This seems like the culmination of this kind of thing.

RIP.

Lots of angry piling on David Walliums twitter

Mark G, Saturday, 15 February 2020 18:18 (four years ago) link

I imagine her recent problems were handled with the utmost sympathy by the British press.

Load up your rubber wallets (Tom D.), Saturday, 15 February 2020 18:18 (four years ago) link

I can't believe The Sun have the audacity to promote mental health awareness when they harassed Caroline Flack to a point of no return. They and the rest of the gutter press need to be held accountable for the abhorrent way they treat people. SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE. pic.twitter.com/uW2bCOpy0n

A FB group of journos I mostly lurk on now because quite a few of them are a) terfy and b) exercised about anything ‘woke’ are really not covering themselves in glory right now trying to blame this on trolls.

The piling on on Walliams is terrifically unedifying and lacking in awareness.

||||||||, Saturday, 15 February 2020 21:59 (four years ago) link

Amen. Next time this thread is revived, I want it to be an obituary for the tabloid press.

ailsa, Saturday, 15 February 2020 22:52 (four years ago) link

Actress Lynn Cohen, who every obit's headline tells me was in Sex and the City. OK then. I knew her from appearances on Law & Order and a bunch of other stuff; she was one of those "Hey, it's her! I bet she did it" types.

but also fuck you (unperson), Saturday, 15 February 2020 23:16 (four years ago) link

Lovely and detailed obituary for Barbara Remington, who as an artist seems to have worked with and known a ton of folks and lived a heck of an interesting long life, but whose greatest fame was near-anonymous as the designer of the 1960s US paperback covers of The Lord of the Rings.
