not counting illegals kind of makes it a moot point, no?

ian, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

True.

great gabbneb's ghost (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 23:31 (fourteen years ago) link

xposts Oh, okay. I was trying to do the Wikipedia math 28% of 2.8 vs. 41% of 2.2 million factoring 400,000 illegals minus unknown similar quantity. Anyway, voted tacos but here at the house we eat both regularly. Meat and chopped veggies in a bread product.

james k polk, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i voted tacos tonight and had 2 steak, 1 carnitas, and 1 chorizo, plus various funky and not so funky salsas and marinated veggies. but all i was thinking while eating was "man I wish this was a hot dog, they're so much more versatile."
full disclosure: if corn dogs are considered hot dogs, I'd have to switch allegiances.

torta with hot dog in it >>> soft taco >>> hotdog >>> crispy taco

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 01:10 (fourteen years ago) link

There is no "soft" or "crunchy" taco. There is just taco.

throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 01:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Also:

Houston has better tacos than someone up there is giving credit for. Pastor , chopped onions and cilantro on corn tortillas at Ruchi's Taqueria. cheap and late.

Houston also has more Mexicans than Chicago. Wiki's numbers don't add up.

Also has James Coney Island where you can get a hot dog, I think called Chicago style with pickle and hot peppers. across the street from Ruchi's.

Ruchi's is goddamn crucial.

I thought there was no way this thread could go wrong & got so excited to read it but now I can perfectly remember the taste of the Chinese restaurant pizza puff I used to get for lunch 2x weekly freshman year of high school

A B C, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Anyway obviously if it is that you had to pick one to eat exclusively for the rest of your life then it's tacos but I think my death row meal answer might be different.

Hey maybe we can decide which city has the best pizza by figuring out which has the largest number of Italians, that seems like it would be accurate

― congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, June 23, 2009 5:22 PM

After all, everyone knows Italians make the best pizza.

To continue the trend of taking meal advice from this thread, I had a "Mexican Roll" from the sushi place down the block for dinner. It was actually really good - yellow tail, scallions, avocado, cilantro, and some hot sauce.

There's a Chinese restaurant near my work that offers hot dog fried rice. I guess that's what I'll have for
breakfast.

torta with hot dog in it

Have you seen this? My roomie got a torta cubana a while back and instead of ham it had two hot dogs sliced lengthwise. Really weird but he ate it.

Suggest this user to be danned. (dan m), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:43 (fourteen years ago) link

i wouldn't fuck with that

guammls (QE II), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i might vote gyros over both of these but maybe it's because i haven't had a gyro in a while :(

guammls (QE II), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i'd grind that shit up int oa paste and spread it between two other tortas... xp

ian, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:45 (fourteen years ago) link

last gyro i had was really disappointing... really obvious "mystery meat" shit that tastes of preservatives & salt.

ian, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:45 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't remember the last gyro-qua-gyro i had, but my local shawarma place is completely awesome.

Garbanzo (get bent), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:49 (fourteen years ago) link

shawarma proper is almost always better than "gyro meat"

ian, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 05:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Real gyro/schwarma is when the meat is stacked up on a spit then cut vertically, but I have a newfound respect for the processed/ground meat then formed into loaf and placed on spit or even just cooked up on the grill since I've made it a habit to visit my local chicken and lamb over rice combo cart, the Vendy-award winning Sammy's Halal.

http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/sammys-halal/

I don't know how the other locations are, but the one on Broadway and 73rd in Jackson Heights is truly serving food of the gods.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 12:34 (fourteen years ago) link

this dude philemon has opened shawarma/falafel joints in at least 3 different locations in this city over the past 1 1/2 - 2 years, every place though he remembered me & my crew and made us turkish coffee and hung out with us. the fucking spinning meat sword is unfuckwithable.

you can put anything on a hot dog you can put on a taco

this just made me imagine a "fish hotdog" and I'm not sure how I feel about that

nabisco, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:30 (fourteen years ago) link

I voted tacos, btw, because -- to me -- hot dogs are an awesome fast/cheap/street/fun food, simple and great, but tacos can both do that and rise to the level of a fine, fine meal.

(NB it's kinda interesting might right now to think that if you made a fine hot dog out of the best and most sophisticated material, it probably wouldn't really be considered a hot dog anymore; I can't really tell if that's just an issue of language or if it says something about the notion/category of a "hot dog.")

nabisco, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:49 (fourteen years ago) link

i have had a hot dog as a fine, fine meal

I had some frankfurters on a cold day in the Nachmarkt in Vienna a couple of years ago alongside some tafelspitz. They weren't hot dogs, per se, but they were the best frankfurter sausages I've ever had.

I've had fish sausages before. They did not appeal to me.
