the corniness, staginess, weird alien species, stupid trek jargon etc. are all part of the charm of star trek. enterprise and discovery (and the chris pine kirk movies) may as well not be in the star trek universe afaiac

^ a LIE perpetuated by corrupted decadent vulcan power elites!

the andorian is really the breakout star of this, he steals every scene he's in with his mercurial paranoid aggro schtick

every actor should get a chance to play a role where they get extra expressive utensils attached to their head

five months pass...

been watching enterprise, perhaps because it too is something completely useless to do during quarantine. overall it's not that bad? and plex now makes it easy to skip the song.

the captain is endlessly doing stupid things and is whiny and insecure about vulcans -- not particularly endearing, but it lends a little flavor. the vulcan lady's outfits (and/or lack of them) are absurd, but she's interesting, mysterious and gets to kick a fair bit of ass. honestly the show should be centered on her.

the engineer's accent stands in for having a character -- this is some prime catfish, idn't it cap'n? -- which i guess is star trek canon. the britishes armory officer emerges from boringness only when there are opportunities to be vaguely annoying (i mean there was actually an entire b-plot about how he has no interests or favorites and enjoys nothing more than anything else!) the doctor totally rules. the translator and pilot are agreeable sidekicks.

there have been some good episodes! (i'm only partway into s02.) the one where the doctor doesn't want to alter a society's natural development by offering a cure for a disease was good (although apparently the studio made them change the ending). the temporal time war stuff is pretty goofy but i like it, even though there's no way it will ever adequately pay off. the mysterious automated repair station one was solid.

also some really terrible episodes! the underground remnant of the first colony, ugh (humans gutted our go-befores!) the one with rene auberjonois and a plot that i'm pretty sure every single other trek series already did. the seven samurai episode is just totally paint-by-numbers and doesn't even make sense because they refused to kill the bad guys.

anyway no one is as annoying as neelix or paris or harry kim, so that's at least something to build on

t'pol is ordered to track down former vulcan covert operative bruce davison, who has allegedly gone rogue and is selling bioweapons: this was fine -- we love to see our vulcans struggle with emotions -- until the very end when, almost as a throw-away, they render all the drama and ambiguity moot by definitively revealing davison's guilt/innocence. basically a crime against storytelling

radiation from a weird star system causes everyone except t'pol to become obsessed with weird minutia until they pass out: what the actual fuck? let's remake 'the naked time' yet again only make it as boring as possible? everyone goes oh-so-gently-insane *except* the vulcan, who might at least go entertainingly insane? basically a crime against imagination

one month passes...

hey, the third season is actually pretty good (despite the vulcan massage storyline). things went pretty DS9

If they went in and deleted the theme song from streaming episodes, I bet Enterprise would have a much better reputation with new viewers.

finished this. after a brutal stretch in early-mid s02, the third and fourth seasons were good (although the latter occasionally ventured a bit too far into fan service)

final episode was awful tho
