HOT DOGS V. TACOS

Just back away from this "Chicago is King Taco Town" nonsense.

Didn't say that, but from what I know, Chicago has a greater diversity within its Mexican population and hence a greater diversity within its Mexican cuisine, tacos and beyond.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 20:41 (fourteen years ago) link

chicago has excellent tacos but l.a./s.d. have the best. chicago has the best hot dogs, of course. maybe the best pizza.

Word. Kenan, I feel we have reached an accord today. Should you ever find yourself in LA, and in need of a taco, please to shoot me a line, and we will get it done.

Hopefully, the Chicagoans will reciprocate.

I would never say that Mexican food in Chicago is anything less than complete bullshit, no matter how many Mexicans live here. I hate it.

i will rep for carney's as an example of a great l.a. dog. they have a nice snappy casing and good spice to their dogs. i think the chili on their chili dogs is a little runny but that's forgivable.

l.a. has oaxacan, d.f., yucatecan, mexico city, and all the northern mexico you can shake a stick at.

To be fair, you have to look for it in Texas... in Houston, for instance, forget it. You'll get red sauce slapped all over everything whether you like it or not, and fortunately for their businesses, almost everyone likes it. Austin has Austin food -- you get black beans slapped all over everything whether you like it or not. San Antonio is the real Mexican food destination.

Hot dog - mustard, relish

Polish - deli mustard, grilled onions

Weisswurst or Brat - sauerkraut, deli mustard

Merguez - harissa/mustard, grilled red peppers

This thread has officially derailed my afternoon. Well done.

Two Will Get You Three (B.L.A.M.), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:03 (fourteen years ago) link

first, chicago has the best pizza? C'mon, but we don't need this to turn into a NYC pizza thread.

But I'd like to talk more about NYC Mexican. It's true that for a long time all you had were mission-style imposters, cheap-o joints and other non-authentic stuff, but the last few years has seen an explosion of mexican food, just in time for me to move to Queens. Not to mention Red Hook Huaraches...

dan selzer, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i remember nyc mexican food in the 80s - pure fucking garbage

velko, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Chicago Tribune

Let's have some proof of that. (Not saying it couldn't happen.)

Hard to find data. This is all I could find in brief research:

CHICAGO — As the Chicago area’s Mexican community has grown, so too has the variety of Mexican fare at the city’s restaurants. Looking at regional dishes on local menus is often a best indicator of where Mexican immigrants hail from. Still, through a Web site operated by the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, we learned that Michoacan, Guerrero, Puebla, Veracruz, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, the State of Mexico and Oaxaca all contribute a high percentage of their emigrants to Chicago.

^the site that references is in Spanish and not very well laid out.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:09 (fourteen years ago) link

To more directly address the thread question: hot dogs are fucking nasty, and who cares if you put ketchup of mustard or relish or the precious sweaty dewdrops from the breasts of the Goddess of Pork and Beef Byproducts on it, hot dogs are still just nasty. New York style... some other style... shove it in your hole and then shut it because what just went in there is totally disgusting.

Also, Chicago-style pizza isn't pizza and should be disqualified entirely, thus ending the debate.

Hey maybe we can decide which city has the best pizza by figuring out which has the largest number of Italians, that seems like it would be accurate

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:22 (fourteen years ago) link

After all, everyone knows Italians make the best pizza.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 21:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Not true. In my experience, Mexicans make the best pizza.
