I probably would've been more sanguine about the ISBN thing if my 9-to-5 didn't already feel like Gogo and Didi endlessly talking past one another. I don't need that nonsense leaking into the rest of my life, man.

In fairness, all three times my money was immediately refunded and the sellers told me to just keep the book they sent, but I'm starting to wonder if there's some convoluted scam that allows sellers to dump unwanted stock. Especially when two of the three sellers keep popping up saying they have the book again and again.

This looks like an opportunity to me. Just keep ordering the unstocked book and you'll build a library of free books to read and/or sell on.

MatthewK, there are a lot of apps that can do this - BookScout, Goodreads, half.com when it was going.

I'm noticing this a lot at work:

The Men's bathroom is cleaned and the maintenance person leaves the door propped open to air it out. Long after the floors have dried dudes go in and use the toilets WITHOUT CLOSING THE DOOR

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:02 (four years ago) link

does the cleaner leave the ladies loo door open

BSC Joan Baez (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:21 (four years ago) link

We share a building with four other offices, but just have one set of toilets. At least one man (I think more) has a habit of shutting the men's toilet door after he's finished instead of leaving it ajar, this means you think there is someone using it, and the only way to find out is to try the handle or knock. I guess whoever they are they probably feel annoyed at those of us who leave it ajar, for some other reason I haven't considered.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:30 (four years ago) link

yeah they leave the ladies room open too, but the ladies close the door before they use it afaict

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:59 (four years ago) link

my annoyance is magnified of course because my office is across from the men's room and when some dude take a dump in there with the door wide open you can clearly hear the farts

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 17:01 (four years ago) link

very clear and fair follow up material, irritation approved with full recommendation

stupid internet has gone down thrice since last Saturday morning. each time it's only required rebooting the modem, however my roommate/landlord is gone from about 11 am to 11 pm each day, and each time it's gone down when he wasn't home. and he always locks his room (which has the modem) when he leaves. every time it has only required a modem reboot but I had to wait 8+ hours for it to come back up since I had no way to access it myself.

finally had to say "look dude, can you either not lock your door and trust that I won't rob you, or maybe relocate the modem somewhere else? or call the provider and have them swap out your cable modem?". cos today I got to lead virtual training for work using a T Mobile mobile hotspot (which to be fair, worked surprisingly well!).

thankfully tho I now live 2 miles from my office if worse comes to worse :/

ill fuckin put a paste on those (Neanderthal), Thursday, 6 February 2020 22:17 (four years ago) link

could you have shut off the power from the electric panel (if you have access) to reset. that might've been enough to reboot.

Yerac, Thursday, 6 February 2020 22:39 (four years ago) link

hmmmm I didn't even think of that, lol

ill fuckin put a paste on those (Neanderthal), Thursday, 6 February 2020 22:43 (four years ago) link

tried just now, didn't work. oh well. guessing there's something additional he needs to do.

ill fuckin put a paste on those (Neanderthal), Thursday, 6 February 2020 22:57 (four years ago) link

yeah, if you flipped the correct switch for the modem and it still didn't work , I guess the ethernet cable needs to be disconnected too. Maybe you should set the building on fire?

Yerac, Thursday, 6 February 2020 23:03 (four years ago) link

yeah. I'm just gonna move.

then again, this internet provider is probably to blame. my old place three houses ago, I feel like the connection went down and I had to call tech support to come out every week

1) Having a mixer tap and no matter which kind of water I want (hot/cold) it's ALWAYS the other one that comes out.
2) I have NEVER opened a packet of rice without spilling rice all over the countertop. And while we're on it, how does rice have such properties of expansion and coverage? Two grains fall from the packet and oh my countertop looks like the Somme.
3) Of all the lying lies are sold, the lyingst of all is the 'resealable packet'. They don't reseal, the fuckers, none of them.

Ngolo Cantwell (Chinaski), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 13:08 (four years ago) link

ryvita packets reseal nicely. unfortunately ryvita suffer from point 2 - can't eat them without covering the place in crumbs

My nonfave is EASY-OPEN resealable packages.

I'm looking at you, Kraft - your cheese packaging is neither easy-open nor (should you by some miracle get it open) resealable.

I have scissors and binder clips all over my kitchen to open stuff and clip it closed.

Yerac, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 19:49 (four years ago) link

Ugh yes, Aldi has "resealable" packages on their lunch meat and cheeses but since it seems to just be weak glue, there's always some small bubble no matter how hard I press, especially for multiple uses. I end up just chucking the package into a large ziploc anyway.

I'm not a particularly enthusiastic Beyonce fan, but I do love when "Single Ladies" pops on the radio ... until it gets to the "... and delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond" line, and I think, really? A "Toy Story" reference? That's really stupid. It always takes me out the same way the equally dated/silly "Titanic" bit in the otherwise great "Oops! I Did It Again" does.

i don't like when my job sends mass emails from constant contact because it is dumb and because it has an "unsubscribe" link at the bottom which is very tempting. if you unsubscribe does it tell the sender?

forensic plumber (harbl), Friday, 28 February 2020 00:09 (four years ago) link

See who unsubscribed when you click on the Reporting tab and look in the Unsubscribed Rate column for an email campaign. Click on the hyperlinked number of unsubcribed contacts your email received to see who unsubscribed and the reason they left, if they included one. You won't be able to email these contacts again unless they sign back up on your list. Sometimes a contact gets unsubscribed by accident. There are ways to add the unsubscribed contact back to your list if this happens.

i think i'll unsubscribe right before i quit then, hopefully soon

I hate anybody who repeats inane shit over and over.

Like last year. The Magic one their first playoff game in years (a road game). Aight. Fans were excited downtown. Cool, y'know, show yr support.

So I go to a soccer-themed Irish pub where basketball basically isn't featured to watch my local team. This dude at the bar drunkenly yells "GONNA GET YAAAA", which is part of the original Magic theme song from 1989. Ok cool, callback.

He then proceeded to do this every five minutes for two hours.

I was so glad when the Magic lost the next 4

- learning to use various versions of nespresso machines in hotels (usually when I'm drunk and not thinking clearly)
- trying to read silver on silver writing on nespresso pods in hotels to work out what I'm drinking (usually when I'm drunk and not reading clearly and in real danger of drinking decaf)
- the names of nespresso pods in hotels telling you fuck all about what they are and why they are all different colours

- bonus IA: liners in hotel room bins that collapse into the bins at the slightest hint of any content

I can't stand it when my kids, who I love and care for but who are also at a stage old enough to more or less care for themselves, complain that they don't feel well but can't get much more specific than that. For example:

"My stomach hurts."
"How does it hurt?'
"I don't know."
"Does it feel like you're going to throw up?"
"I don't think so."
"Do you need to go to the bathroom?"
"No."
"Are you hungry?"
"No."
"Did you eat too much or too fast?"
"No."
"So what exactly feels bad?"
"I don't know, it just doesn't feel good."
"Do you need to stay home from school?"
"I don't want to."
"But do you need to?"
"I don't know."
"If you have a fever or feel like you're going to throw up, you should stay home."
"I don't think I'm going to throw up."
"OK. Well, if you go to school and you're still feeling bad, can you go to the nurse?"
"The nurse is stupid and all she'll do is take my temperature."
"Um, ok. But you do realize that once you go to school it's sort of out of my hands? I'm giving you a chance to stay home. Do you want to stay home?"
"I don't know."

It's so hard to take care of someone when you don't know what needs fixing.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 March 2020 15:02 (four years ago) link

Don't know whether this is rational or irrational, but I'm so deeply angry at my housemate (in Seattle) for continuing to travel by air, go to work when he could work from home, go to social dances four times a week, eat all his meals out, when the rest of us are doing everything we reasonably can to keep the coronavirus out of our house and keep from giving it to others. Now that King County is officially recommending that people work from home and stay out of group gatherings, everyone else in the house is taking it seriously, but not this dude.

He admits it's for purely selfish reasons; he says he knows he's risking killing people, but he already risks killing people when he drives, so limiting the spread of a pandemic just isn't a good enough reason to give up anything he likes doing. "I'm okay with a very high risk of making people sick, knowing some of them will die," isn't an argument I know how to counter, and trying to counter it reduces me to inarticulate anger and makes me a very ineffective arguer.

Maybe I'm crazy, idk. In every other respect he's been a great housemate.

bad housemate/roommate situations are traumatic experiences for life.

also, it's not irrational. I would probably just stone cold shut them out going forward because I have such little patience for that.
