I've been meaning to try a few of the central asian places close to me -- we did Cheburechnaya a few years back and were pretty disappointed, but I've heard good things about Khazan Mangal (Uzbeki) and Marani (Georgian). Marani is closed until sundown on Saturday so it's hard to get there for kid-time dinner.

marani is the place with meat up top and dairy downstairs right? been meaning to head over there.

i may have posted before about taste of samarkand on woodhaven blvd in rego park, very good uzbek spot. haven't been in a few years but the lagman was notable and the vibe was extremely good queens

Has anyone eaten at Soleluna in Sunnyside? Trying to find a place to make a reservation for 10 people and that seems like one of the few well-reviewed options right now.

I went there dozens of times when I lived a few blocks away. it's a great atmosphere, the owner is usually around, the food is pretty good.

any sense of whether it's vegan friendly at all? (the two vegans in our party add another challenge)

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:09 (four years ago) link

you probably don't want to go into the city but john's on 12th st in the EV has a whole red sauce vegan menu, and is big enough for groups and is an extremely classic place

adam, Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:11 (four years ago) link

Tangra down the street is trashy fun and a huge room that's always empty. Vegans can eat wet manchurian baby corn dishes. All the food tastes the same but it's good. They have these fish fingers that are fucking delicious.

dan selzer, Thursday, 13 February 2020 21:12 (four years ago) link

ohhh I liked that place. Virginia Plain took me there last year. I would call ahead and ask about vegan options. I would hope they would have an eggless pasta hanging around.''

We decided to just go to Cafe Henri again and wing it without a reservation (going very early)

Wife discovered Jackson Diner and now we’re having Indian like every other day. Any Recommendations from that place?

calstars, Wednesday, 2 September 2020 20:06 (three years ago) link

My recommendation would be to eat at the Mustang Thakali Kitchen instead.

If you like dosas, I recommend Samudra on 37th Ave and 75th St.

This is a heartbreaking story, and also, I never remember hearing about stuff like this happening in Jackson Heights, at least not in my eight years in queens.

y'all I'm spending 24 hours in Flushing just for the hell of it, what should I do/eat/see in Flushing?

there's an overwhelming number of guides to flushing out there but the i find joe distefano at chopsticksandmarrow.com to be very reliable.

bring cash, lots of cash only places. get the #6 at white bear.

Some pretty good pirated DVD’s on 41st road and main

calstars, Thursday, 30 September 2021 21:45 (two years ago) link

What adam said, and with provisos that non-veg and covid:

Hunan Kitchen of Grand Szechuan (on main street, Uncle Mao's pork)
Szechuan Mountain House
Daxi in the New World Mall (a little upscale, but the food is v good)
Haven't been to Spicy and Tasty in ages, but might still be good.

Would have recommended the weirdo salad at Fu Run but it's apparently closed!

theres a mini food court on the north side of roosevelt ave across from the new world mall makn entrance with joe's steamed rice rolls in the front stall and a jian bing spot just behind it, both worth your time.

there's a place on 40th rd that does good bing too, followoshi, it is newish. it shares a space with a duck roasting concern, i've only been once and tue duck jian bing was real good.

rip golden mall

little manilla festival in woosdide, 69th and roosevelt, right now.

dan selzer, Saturday, 2 October 2021 15:21 (two years ago) link

I crave steamed rice rolls on a regular basis but alas they're not entirely gluten-free and use part rice but also part wheat flour.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 2 October 2021 15:24 (two years ago) link

Oh shit I watched a video about these rice rolls a few months ago!! Which filling should I get???

Warmed Regards, (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 2 October 2021 16:28 (two years ago) link

Shrimp for sure and maybe the non-bbq pork? Iirc there are a few additives and you can customize for whatever you want--scallions, corn?, can't remember what else.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 2 October 2021 16:44 (two years ago) link

Ive never tried the curry fish balls with peanut sauce but they look intriguing.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Saturday, 2 October 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link
