Thanks, honorable poll people!

Re: Wyrmwoods, this is the next track. I wouldn't say the rest of the album sounds like this but it kind of gives you an idea of where it's going, maybe enough of one to let you know whether or not you want to continue on to the final two, very long tracks

The extreme, nonsensical compression is the point: the next track clicks in at precisely four minutes--exactly twice the former's length-- and the track after that, 16 mins, w/ the last one at 32

― are you a fan of i.die music (Drugs A. Money)

Wait, there's no 8 minute track on this album.

enochroot, Monday, 3 February 2020 14:56 (four years ago) link

Wait what?!?!?! I'm not listening to it anyway!

Frederik B, Monday, 3 February 2020 15:00 (four years ago) link

From the Glenn Branca metal thread:

since we don't have a thraed for metal that sounds like SY and/or PiL:

― gaudio, Sunday, February 2, 2020 12:40 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

Yep, just bought that on first listen. Really nice guitar sound and riffs. My partner called it "surf metal", actually.

― With considerable charm, you still have made a choice (Sund4r)

Listening to it now – Sund4r's partner is otm.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Monday, 3 February 2020 15:02 (four years ago) link

Will check out that Wyrmwood shortly.

If the WOSO album doesn't place on the main poll I'm holding all of you responsible fwiw

TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Monday, 3 February 2020 15:14 (four years ago) link

Well, yeah.

(It's on my ballot.)

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Monday, 3 February 2020 15:25 (four years ago) link

Ok, halfway through the third song, the whole Wyrmwood album is incredible

Frederik B, Monday, 3 February 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

So far

Frederik B, Monday, 3 February 2020 16:10 (four years ago) link

Echoing the recent hype for Witch Trail! It is some blissful doomish punk.

A minute into Wyrmwoods and it is making an impression!!

tangenttangent, Monday, 3 February 2020 16:28 (four years ago) link

It takes a lot for a >20 mins track to hold my attention like this Wyrmwoods closer has, omg. I don’t mind ambient when it is brickwalled maximalist galactic splendour. Thanks for flagging this up, DAM!

tangenttangent, Monday, 3 February 2020 17:24 (four years ago) link

I guess this calls for a 64-minute followup album?

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Monday, 3 February 2020 17:27 (four years ago) link

Wasn't on board until this closing track. This and the two minute opener should have been the whole album

TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Monday, 3 February 2020 18:12 (four years ago) link

it bugs me that the closer is not 128 minutes long

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 3 February 2020 18:16 (four years ago) link

Well there's a MISSING TRACK you see, but only if you reject the cosmic logic that lies beyond mathematical ken.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Monday, 3 February 2020 18:19 (four years ago) link

Closer should be 256m long - every length the square of the preceding

TOO LOW, the Curator (imago), Monday, 3 February 2020 18:25 (four years ago) link

Yeah pomenitul otm: I'm sure there's some covert reason why this album has a MISSING CENTER...I still love it anyhow

Anyways, serious props to whomever it was who nominated this awesome-as-fuck Cherubs album because it's been doing my head in lately

"Sooey Pig" is a decent approximation of how "Tommy Gun Angel" would've ended up like if Bardo Pond had been on Amphetamine Reptile

@pomenitul, @seandalai
voted a few weeks ago, realizing now that i want to give points to 5 more records. prolly not making a difference in the rollout, but is it ok if i resend and replace my ballot?

gaudio, Friday, 7 February 2020 13:22 (four years ago) link

I'll wait for seandalai to confirm but I'm fairly sure that's fine.

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Friday, 7 February 2020 13:23 (four years ago) link

right! thanks pom

gaudio, Friday, 7 February 2020 13:24 (four years ago) link

yeah i'll let him know

Oor Neechy, Friday, 7 February 2020 17:54 (four years ago) link

Could everyone start thinking about their ballots now? EOY season poll is not over yet!

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Friday, 7 February 2020 21:14 (four years ago) link

I hope y'all don't forget about the Chelsea Wolfe album. Again she failed to make the general poll so I hope she gets in this one even if it isnt as riff heavy as the past few

Oor Neechy, Friday, 7 February 2020 21:28 (four years ago) link

Anyone want to campaign for other albums?

Oor Neechy, Friday, 7 February 2020 23:13 (four years ago) link

Where's the pup and moon tooth and mdou moctar fans who bemoaned them not making the eoy poll?

Where's brad?!

Oor Neechy, Friday, 7 February 2020 23:24 (four years ago) link

Voted. Never did get to listen to the Yellow Eyes record, someone convince me that was a major oversight.

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Saturday, 8 February 2020 01:05 (four years ago) link

It was.

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 8 February 2020 01:07 (four years ago) link

I voted too btw.

If everyone could post when they have voted it means seandalai can check incase something went wrong.

Oor Neechy, Saturday, 8 February 2020 03:50 (four years ago) link

Almost done with the preliminary ballot. Will post when I vote for sure and probably to campaign for things...

The Obsequiae album is pretty great! And Lord Weird Slough Feg! And give the Candlemass album a chance, I think it's their best in over a decade tbh.

Frobisher, Saturday, 8 February 2020 04:46 (four years ago) link

I liked the Esoteric, surprisingly since I usually think the doom metal albums with the organs are goofy. As usual, I don't see the appeal of Obsequiae or Schammasch, despite many others really enjoying them.

It didn't make my ballot, but I'll point out the Ausmuteants "album," a 20 minute group of punk songs sung from the point of view of a cop, but written by crusty anarchists. Absolutely hilarious.

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Saturday, 8 February 2020 04:59 (four years ago) link

Three more suggestions:

Veiled – In Blinding Presence (pitch-black manic dissonance heightened through hypnosis)
Belenos – Argoat (Celtic BM heroism from Brittany)
Sur Austru – Meteahna timpurilor (ex-Negură Bunget, in keeping with that band's final albums)

major stars album fucking rules

are you a fan of i.die music (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 9 February 2020 10:45 (four years ago) link

Lol, I'm kinda getting into this. I have the most fake metal taste ever, but I did hear enough good stuff that it's kinda fun to finesse it into a top 25.

Frederik B, Sunday, 9 February 2020 11:01 (four years ago) link

good good

Oor Neechy, Sunday, 9 February 2020 21:14 (four years ago) link

Would be nice to get lots of ballots from ilxors who have never voted before.

Look at the nominations list and if there are albums you like, then please vote for them. Don't worry if you think you are not metal enough. If its on the noms list its metal enough.

Oor Neechy, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:21 (four years ago) link

Exactly, I predict Weyes Blood will win this poll too. I'm holding off sending the ballot until the last day but I will vote as usual.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:26 (four years ago) link

Agreed.

There's a staggering range of sounds on that list, so everyone (well, except for Tuomas) can find something worth voting for.

xp

toilet-cleaning brain surgeon (pomenitul), Monday, 10 February 2020 12:28 (four years ago) link

There are a couple albums I like but aren't voting for, because I don't consider them metal enough, though. Fly Pan Am and Blanck Mass. I don't begrudge anyone voting for them, they are good albums, but I'm having more fun creating a list without them.

Frederik B, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:28 (four years ago) link

Blanck Mass might not be 'metal' as such but I have no problems classing it as 'industrial' and valid for this poll. Not sure if I actually like it enough to place it high tho.

Siegbran, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:31 (four years ago) link

I did hesitate when finishing my ballot, as my picks are unlikely to surprise. The hesitation didn't last long though: this poll and the nomination process made for some excellent catching-up listening during xmas and after, and I can truthfully say I like to love all 25 albums I listed. I'll send it in this week.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:38 (four years ago) link

I have no problem thinking of them as valid. They were on my first version of the list. But half the fun for me is digging into what it is I really value in metal records, and Blanck Mass belongs to a genre I listen to for other things. Cattle Decapitation, great use of climate change monologues, trve metal.

Frederik B, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:39 (four years ago) link

You have a ballot of up to 50 albums and we encourage as many as possible to do so as possible so we get interesting results.

Oor Neechy, Monday, 10 February 2020 12:57 (four years ago) link

I have my initial short list of.....81 albums. Hoo boy.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 10 February 2020 16:14 (four years ago) link

That's the spirit!
