I'm not sure the album's even any good aside from the obvious standouts -- does the remaster remove the murk from the mix? Too much of it plays like White Guy Goes to Therapy.

The tour (did every leg have the Lepage staging?) was cool. And no, remaster does not remove the murk, the murk is baked in.

I saw him 3 times on this tour (well the last time was a WOMAD/RealWorld festival show with a scaled down set). Was so great.

The latest vinyl remaster of the album sounds great but it's always going to be an overstuffed murky mix, maximal Lanois.

Answer for me is Digging in the Dirt though it could be anything else other than Steam and Kiss that Frog.

Voted Steam despite being Sledgehammer II (and having the most ludicrously bad video of all time), can't remove nostalgic feelings of loving it in 93

"Digging in the Dirt" is such a cool song.

I last saw him on that dual tour with Sting, where they shared a band and sometimes swapped off on each other's songs (and where Sting seemed to be having a blast just playing bass for long stretches). I found it hilarious that Sting chose to sing lead on "Kiss That Frog." Like, thanks for touring with me, Pete, we're going to play one of your stupidest songs:

I once played "Love to Be Loved" while driving home from seeing Autumn Sonata, it was poignant as hell.

geoffreyess, Saturday, 1 February 2020 21:19 (four years ago) link

It's pretty, and shockingly (afaict) one of the only Eno/Gabriel collaborations other than "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway." Though there is the cool Gabriel song Eno did/deconstructed/reconstructed:

I think Eno is on the version of "Here Comes the Flood" on Fripp's "Exposure," too.

think i'm going with "only us"... love the metric shifts, can never quite get a grasp of where it's going. i enjoy it.

dyl, Friday, 14 February 2020 05:09 (four years ago) link

Voted "Come Talk to Me" for its groove & melody and which I can't separate from the concert footage of Paula Cole in slinky dress and combat boots pleading with a phone booth.

alfred is being way too hard on himself upthread. UP may be a less significant record than SO, but i reach for it a lot more often.

remove "Steam" and "Kiss That Frog" and it's a masterpiece, therapized or no, and one of the great breakup records.

That's the stressful part of being a solo artist: you can't break up.

BTW, close to 20 years since his last album of original material!

"I think Eno is on the version of "Here Comes the Flood" on Fripp's "Exposure," too." Just the beginning part which is actually another song that's kind of cross faded in.

"remove "Steam" and "Kiss That Frog" and it's a masterpiece, therapized or no, and one of the great breakup records." really I'd just take Kiss that Frog off, Steam is ok.

Replace Steam with Quiet Steam, and yes, drop Kiss That Frog entirely

doug watson, Saturday, 15 February 2020 00:36 (four years ago) link

1. “digging in the dirt” is grebt but these results are unexpected
2. okay who voted for “kiss that frog” lol
3. glad to see “blood of eden” getting some love. the until the end of the world version is great too
4. I ended up voting for “come talk to me” on the strength of those drums but also for the triumphant return of the “Biko” bagpipe patch. first 50 seconds of that track are about as strong as an album opener gets

Against all odds, afaict only the third direct intersection between Gabriel and Eno (the others being a couple of tracks on "Lamb" and a couple of tracks on Fripp's "Exposure").

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 28 August 2022 14:44 (one year ago) link

yes quite strange they never worked together more.

akm, Sunday, 28 August 2022 23:36 (one year ago) link

'love to be loved' did in fact deserve a vote

mookieproof, Sunday, 28 August 2022 23:50 (one year ago) link

just realized scrolling up that Josh and I had the same back and forth about Eno and Gabriel, fuck we are all getting old and repeating ourselves now

akm, Monday, 29 August 2022 00:02 (one year ago) link

lol

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 29 August 2022 00:28 (one year ago) link

yes quite strange they never worked together more.

I wonder if it's because Gabriel is very painstaking about pursuing every option in his recordings, and Eno is supposedly more spontaneous? I suspect Gabriel wouldn't like having a performance or track erased just to clear the air and reduce the options in the mix.

I wouldn't have voted for "Fourteen Black Paintings" but it's a good example of his technique of "wander about for a few minutes to provide context for an epiphanic climax".

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 31 August 2022 14:23 (one year ago) link

“Steam” is to “Sledgehammer” as “Human Touch” is to “Brilliant Disguise”, but I still love all 4 songs. The video is great; Stephen R. Johnson was a real talent

beamish13, Wednesday, 31 August 2022 14:31 (one year ago) link

xpost If I had to guess I would say they likely have worked together more, but his contributions never made it on to a record. Kind of like how Bryan Ferry takes forever to record his records with dozens of different musicians, and the final product is a piecemeal combination of various takes and contributors.

― Josh in Chicago,

and he has also worked with Eno intermittently

lol the vocal backing track is audible

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 31 August 2022 15:13 (one year ago) link

I think the only thing that's musically 'live' is his lead.

Having toured with Robert Fripp, Tony Levin is blasé about this level of onstage spectacle.
