he goes into pure scouse at one point (in prison with hoffa) in the irishman, it's hilarious.

The story of him smacking the ice-cream out of Pacino’s hand off-the-cuff, unrehearsed, had me grinning. He’s great in The Irishman imo yeah.

how does acting not just turn into a big fight on-set?

mark s, Saturday, 1 February 2020 13:12 (four years ago) link

blooper reels but everyone just thumping everyone else

mark s, Saturday, 1 February 2020 13:12 (four years ago) link

the "welsh" in e3 of WHITE HOUSE FARM MURDERS is er wayward shall we say

mark s, Saturday, 1 February 2020 16:55 (four years ago) link

six eps in and the welsh never got better

(taff has been put on administrative leave for being a dick and possibly also for being bad at his own accent)

mark s, Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:23 (four years ago) link

Six eps? It took them less time than that to catch the cunt

Lately I’ve been having trouble telling the difference between him and Alex Borstein from the marvelous Mrs. Maisel

omar little, Friday, 14 February 2020 01:13 (four years ago) link

I don’t even mean that as an insult it’s just that for example in that scene where he first sits down across from Hoffa in the prison cafeteria he reminded me of Susie getting increasingly agitated at midge in the deli

He’s fantastic in the Irishman I think

Looking forward to the second season.

i think of what ive seen him in, his lost westerby begging control for a brief on the prague incident is the standout

BSC Joan Baez (darraghmac), Friday, 14 February 2020 09:41 (four years ago) link

role was amalgamated so graham may have been playing sam collins actually iirc

i guess i shd write up my irishman appreciation on the appropriate thread (tl;dr: it's good not bad) -- meanwhile my theory of scorsese and stephen graham is that he hired him to ensure pacino stays measured, knowing that if ap starts creeping into the "GREAT ASS!" reds marty can unleash an actualy louder and noisier yelling-machine that gets to maximum redface much quicker lol. this is how caring works comments are closed

i was watching irishman after the early eps of white house farm murders so the badness of the welsh accent slightly filtered over into my appreciation of tony pro as a plausible italian-american

mark s, Friday, 14 February 2020 10:37 (four years ago) link

I suppose he's ok in The Irishman, but it's Pacino who is the weak link in that otherwise class movie.

calzino, Friday, 14 February 2020 10:58 (four years ago) link

no hes good

mark s, Friday, 14 February 2020 10:59 (four years ago) link

*very quietly and quirkily* "great ass!"

mark s, Friday, 14 February 2020 11:00 (four years ago) link

Ray Winstone as English yelling-machine keeping Nicholson in check in The Departed?

Lack of English yelling-machine keeping Day Lewis in check in Gangs of New York one of many reasons that is bad not good

Ward Fowler, Friday, 14 February 2020 11:01 (four years ago) link

I think from 90's onward Pacino seems very overindulged and his acting is mostly bombastic, overrated, hammy .. he really gets on my tits!

calzino, Friday, 14 February 2020 11:03 (four years ago) link

hes on record as saying directors kept hiring him for the shouty, give em the shouty, if hes asked he can do it either way

hes great obv

tbf he is bad in Carlito's Way and it is a cornball movie but I still love it.

calzino, Friday, 14 February 2020 11:43 (four years ago) link

is he bad? i refuse to think about it in case you're right.

otm about cornball, otm about loving it

actually that is pretty fucking good, sort of just how I imagined the Hoffa in American Tabloid

calzino, Friday, 14 February 2020 13:08 (four years ago) link

(De Niro weirdly resembling DiCaprio in that scene courtesy the anti-aging device)
