such a joyous track! heard it in a few mixes where it just came barrelling in with this huge stupid grin on its face

Burna Boy is the only person who can possibly make afrobeats happen in the US atm, I'm afraid.

not a chart geek, but I thought Davido had already had some success?

rob, Friday, 31 January 2020 15:24 (four years ago) link

I honestly preferred the Davido-album, but it seems like Burna Boy had a lot more succes this year?

Frederik B, Friday, 31 January 2020 15:40 (four years ago) link

i might be alone in finding Davido just a bit uninspiring and not fun? can someone point me to a fun Davido track?

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2020 15:41 (four years ago) link

Define "fun", please!

You don't like Risky?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9H3iinXZv0

Banana fall on you!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Iyuym-Gci0

Sweet In The Middle is pretty fun:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVte8a_2q80

But again... not sure what you mean by fun here - if you measure his music up against balloon... well.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 31 January 2020 15:52 (four years ago) link

well colour me wrong. a lot of the stuff i'd previously checked out was that smooth, sleepy side of afrobeats that doesn't really excite me much

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2020 16:08 (four years ago) link

i like Risky best out of those. guess I just like chunky, dancehall or hip hop inflected riddims when it comes to afrobeats

not a chart geek, but I thought Davido had already had some success?

Both Davido’s “Fall” and Afro B’s “Drogba (Joanna)” were actual hits on the US R&B/Hip-Hop (Airplay) Chart last year.

People I'd like to see blow up in 2020: A-Star, Teni, Rema

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2020 16:22 (four years ago) link

Also, Tiwa Savage and Sho Madjozi need some long-overdue wider recognition

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2020 16:24 (four years ago) link

it is stunning to me that there was a new album of (mostly) beyonce released this year that got no traction here

That's mostly because the album was okay.

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Friday, 31 January 2020 16:27 (four years ago) link

there were outstanding singles! just nothing commercially released as such except for the very shitty one.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 31 January 2020 16:35 (four years ago) link

oh yeah "Joanna" I actually heard in the wild (of Montreal, but still)

rob, Friday, 31 January 2020 16:37 (four years ago) link

oh i know there were some hits. Burna is the only guy I can see breaking into the mainstream as a star though, you know, of the kind that other artists pay to have on their projects.
I'd LOVE to see Rema blowing up, obviously.

walking towards the sun since 2007 (alex in mainhattan), Friday, 31 January 2020 21:31 (four years ago) link

I'm interested in the Erika de Casier tune. it's not that I don't like it but I need some context perhaps?

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:03 (four years ago) link

Tim F voting 'Before I Let Go' - mate

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:04 (four years ago) link

Sorry yeah Erika should be bold

Tim F, Friday, 31 January 2020 22:05 (four years ago) link

but what's the deal with it? I know nothing about her. sounds like dnb of the sort I'd hear 20 years ago but with a house gloss.. other than that?

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:24 (four years ago) link

the erika de casier album is one of the best r&b albums of the year, it's very 90s r&b in sound but with deep house textures mixed in too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDM73CL8zXs

this is the original "intimate", the club remix is a bonus track on the album, made by one of the album's main producers. there's nothing else like it on the album unfortunately so it's just this wonderfully singular perfect blend of d&b & r&b

ufo, Friday, 31 January 2020 23:15 (four years ago) link

yeah sadly there isn't any particular context for the club mix other than whatever context you invent for it in your head

Tim F, Friday, 31 January 2020 23:22 (four years ago) link

the other thing she did that was like 'intimate club mix' was the club mix of 'drive' from a couple of years back, which is on a bit more of a ukg tip:

thanks ufo. okay that makes more sense

I suddenly thought "wait, I must have missed Michael Kiwanuka when I listed my highest-placing non-77 tracks" but no, it was far further down, having only received votes from me and (perhaps) whoever nominated it. Hope that means people were saving their points for the album.

387 Michael Kiwanuka - You Ain't The Problem 47 2 0

Vaguely related: the one track I didn't nominate but which nevertheless ended up receiving points from me alone.

621 SAULT - Smile and Go 26 1 0

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 2 February 2020 00:21 (four years ago) link

i was the other voter for "you ain't the problem". as you i am quite surprised of its' poor performance.

walking towards the sun since 2007 (alex in mainhattan), Sunday, 2 February 2020 08:17 (four years ago) link

Aha! The arrangements all across that LP were frequently hella groovy. Perhaps not in a very ILM way though.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 2 February 2020 11:55 (four years ago) link

I was surprised I was the only one who voted for Fury's Laughter as I didn't nominate it and it was fairly ubiquitous this year and did well in lots of the end of year lists xps

And thanks to all the poll runners/organisers

paolo, Monday, 3 February 2020 17:26 (four years ago) link

11 of my albums list has already been in the album list rollout and there's 20 left to go. I guess I'm going to have a high "hivemind". But what is blood sausage? And why are things done in 77s? Halp

maffew12, Thursday, 6 February 2020 12:32 (four years ago) link

I think "blood sausage" refers to voting for tracks that got votes in the ILM poll but not in any other EOY polls? Though I have no idea how that's calculated?

77 is an ILX arc number, it's the name of the invite-only secret board, which got its name from the ID number of said board (I guess it was the 77th sub-board created?).

Tuomas, Thursday, 6 February 2020 12:44 (four years ago) link

we demand the formulas!

maffew12, Thursday, 6 February 2020 12:48 (four years ago) link

(This is all impressive and thank you)

maffew12, Thursday, 6 February 2020 12:49 (four years ago) link

77 isn't invite btw in case you were wondering, but it is locked for reasons of privacy so you do need mod approval in order to access it. and you get that by requesting it on the relevant thread

― groovypanda, Sunday, 2 February 2020 20:13 (four days ago) bookmarkflaglink

Yeah I nominated that but it fell off my ballot because in the end the laughing sample tips it over from earworm to slightly irritating

or something, Thursday, 6 February 2020 13:33 (four years ago) link

i also nearly voted for "fury's laughter"

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 6 February 2020 13:59 (four years ago) link

work and personal life have been insane for me in the past year, so was kind of out of the loop - first time sending in an unweighted ballot, still haven't gotten through the whole 77.

Caroline Polachek - Door

박혜진 Park Hye Jin - I Don't Care

Roz, Thursday, 6 February 2020 15:47 (four years ago) link

So you were the other "I Don't Care" voter... I was surprised no one else voted for it, it feels exactly like the sort of stuff ILX dance music crew would love.

Tuomas, Thursday, 6 February 2020 15:50 (four years ago) link

Great tune but my long list of great tunes exceeded my actual ballot by a factor of about five

Tim F, Thursday, 6 February 2020 15:52 (four years ago) link

xpost Yeah I thought it was well loved too but maybe people voted for the EP, which is great. Can't see it placing so high though.
