it was outrageously fun

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 31 January 2020 05:48 (four years ago) link

Last of Us is definitely a story driven game. It gets really engrossing once you finish the Capitol building.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 31 January 2020 16:39 (four years ago) link

Ha Sakuza. I think I mixed up Sekiro, Yakuza and Sakura all together.

We've been tag teaming all the same saved games (like doing handoffs when one gets aggravated or needs to do some work), so I might play Last of Us on my own.

Yerac, Friday, 31 January 2020 18:01 (four years ago) link

does The Last of Us involve violence on children? that's a no go for me, and I see a child in the game art.

juntos pedemos (Euler), Friday, 31 January 2020 18:09 (four years ago) link

yeah

Mordy, Friday, 31 January 2020 18:10 (four years ago) link

:(

it was free on psplus

juntos pedemos (Euler), Friday, 31 January 2020 18:11 (four years ago) link

i haven't made it far but I say yes. One dies in the prologue.

I have been very surprised about the amount of swearing in the games. I wished there was a function to play a cleaner version. I have been trying to figure out which games might be ok for this 8 year old that I watch sometimes.

Yerac, Friday, 31 January 2020 18:14 (four years ago) link

Part of the "games aren't just for kids anymore" aesthetics is swearing.

As for what the games you have that are appropriate for a pre-teen, I think Horizon Zero Dawn is the best bet. It's almost profanity-free (the one censorable swear that I can think of is missable, meaning that it's not part of the main storyline), and also doesn't ogle its main character. That said, it is post-apocalyptic and there are scenes where people die horribly.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 31 January 2020 18:24 (four years ago) link

The horrible deaths aren't graphic, however.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 31 January 2020 18:25 (four years ago) link

NBD, really, if you play anything online most of the profuse swearing you'll hear from fellow players is by eight-year-olds afaict.

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Friday, 31 January 2020 18:26 (four years ago) link

I might just get FIFA for him to play and be done with it. He's not my kid so I don't want to be responsible for corruption.

Yerac, Friday, 31 January 2020 18:30 (four years ago) link

Horizon Zero Dawn is pretty good! but it’s also guilty of some of the most outlandishly dull dialogue ever committed to ones and zeroes in a AAA game.

Spider-Man would be a very good bet for an 8 yo - there is no outright killing, you never use a gun, it’s v wholesome

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 31 January 2020 19:31 (four years ago) link

i was reading about spiderman and it said there was some violence and mild swearing.

Yeah we really like Horizon Zero. So far it's our favorite although the dialogue and the one dude that just lays on the ground forever are dull. We just started Witcher 3 last night. So much prologue!

Yerac, Friday, 31 January 2020 19:46 (four years ago) link

Spider-man might have the occasional "damn" or "hell," something like that, but it's pretty innocent super hero fun. But, like, for example, something like Resident Evil 7, if that were a movie it would have to go out unrated for all the extreme violence and language.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 31 January 2020 20:12 (four years ago) link

My 9 year old son loves Ratchet & Clank (good) and Knack (bad) but also racing games like Driveclub and TrackMania as well as Rocket League.

All of those are dirt cheap now.

groovypanda, Friday, 31 January 2020 21:31 (four years ago) link

If you can find games that are rated ESRB "E" or "10+" those tend to be "good for children".

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:24 (four years ago) link

spider-man is damagingly boring. ratchet and clank and rocket league are both enormous fun.

Fizzles, Friday, 31 January 2020 22:26 (four years ago) link

still obsessively playing Witcher 3 and nothing else. completed the main quest and now it feels like the real fun is starting somehow

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:27 (four years ago) link

Remote Play via the Switch would be fantastic

groovypanda, Saturday, 1 February 2020 15:20 (four years ago) link

Kratos is very emotionally distant from his son in God of War.

Yerac, Sunday, 2 February 2020 07:07 (four years ago) link

it's because his son isn't good enough at helping out with the bow and arrow. it makes kratos very angry, which he transmutes into sadness and distance

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Sunday, 2 February 2020 07:09 (four years ago) link

looking for more two player couch games. we love Crash Bandicoot Racing and Overcooked 2 but starting to get a bit tired of them

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Sunday, 2 February 2020 12:49 (four years ago) link

EDF if you like co-op shooters, both 4.1 and 5 are fantastic, grab whichever is cheapest

chihuahuau, Sunday, 2 February 2020 12:53 (four years ago) link

Cook Serve Delicious 2 rules for coop

juntos pedemos (Euler), Sunday, 2 February 2020 13:10 (four years ago) link

Thanks Euler, there goes the rest of my Sunday. I own CSD the mobile game & on Steam but didn’t know there was a PS4 version.

hyds (gyac), Sunday, 2 February 2020 15:08 (four years ago) link

it is different than CSD1. on console rather than touchscreen the controls are hard to master, and slower, so I've found it doable better in coop, à la Overcooked. but it has soooooo many recipes and is thus fun fun fun.

juntos pedemos (Euler), Sunday, 2 February 2020 15:50 (four years ago) link

xpost I am really into Witcher 3 as well. It's really relaxing.

Yerac, Monday, 3 February 2020 20:53 (four years ago) link

Because it's boring? (Sorry.)

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Monday, 3 February 2020 21:24 (four years ago) link

it is sort of boring. repetitive in some ways but also very addictive. I feel obsessively like I have to complete it. but I also wonder if that's because I am itching to get on with some sort of other game instead

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 3 February 2020 21:26 (four years ago) link

yeah it fills some completist compulsions I have. But I also switch off easily between all the games I have right now.

Yerac, Monday, 3 February 2020 21:51 (four years ago) link

the show makes a lot more sense as well.

Yerac, Monday, 3 February 2020 21:51 (four years ago) link

i really want to play overcooked (it seems totally my thing but partner is like meep?) but I am going to wait until I am home home to do the 7 days ps plus trial and try out a bunch of other games.

Yerac, Monday, 3 February 2020 21:57 (four years ago) link

got my money back on Civ6 because it wasn't compatible on my TV.. but I was keen to play a similar game, you know, strategy, building stuff.. is Tropico 6 worth a look? Or something else? What's Bad North like?

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 01:14 (four years ago) link

Tropico hasn't really changed much since 3. It's sort of disappointing. Still, I enjoyed it a lot the first time I played.

Maybe check out Frostpunk, Two Point Hospital, Jurassic World Evolution, Northgard, Surviving Mars... Bad North looks cool too.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 01:52 (four years ago) link

sims 4 in this month's PS+ (along with Bioshock Complete)

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 04:06 (four years ago) link

Hmm maybe I’ll resub for that

Mordy, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 04:16 (four years ago) link

The Return of the Obra Dinnis GOAT material, I'm on my third playthrough and am getting close to completion. So atmospheric and such brilliant game mecahnics.

Captain ACAB (Neil S), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 08:16 (four years ago) link

Really enjoyed Obra Dinn, but feel like it got less fun towards the end when you had to solve the deaths of some of the more indistinct characters. Felt like I was trial-n-error-ing it a bunch after a certain point. But maybe there were clues that I just didn't pick up.

Regardless, yeah, it is very good. Really well done.

circa1916, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 13:11 (four years ago) link

I think a bit of speculation is inevitable, I didn't feel much compunction switching the names of the Russian seamen around until I got a three, for example.

Captain ACAB (Neil S), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 14:02 (four years ago) link

Being reported that PS5 will cost around $450 to produce, which means at least $470 to recoup. That seems high, even if they do artificially lower the price to sell it at a loss. But on the other hand, people buy phones for $800+ and don't seem to balk at that, and those are just phones. Plus, Playstation exclusives seem pretty awesome.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 15 February 2020 17:13 (four years ago) link

The Last Of Us was £8.99 for download so I thought I'd go for it. Wonderful-looking game, if a little 'on rails' so far. Subject matter a bit close to home in this climate though.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Saturday, 15 February 2020 17:49 (four years ago) link

That's this generation, IMO we should wait till the next is actually out before we can say for sure.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Saturday, 15 February 2020 18:00 (four years ago) link

phones aren't really comparable since they're portable and have a display

ciderpress, Saturday, 15 February 2020 19:14 (four years ago) link

But they also all functionally do the same thing, unlike game consoles, which are unique and which do one thing.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 15 February 2020 20:49 (four years ago) link

spiderman is indeed a lot of fun. really liking it.

Yerac, Saturday, 15 February 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link

It is the only game that I have ever “100%”ed

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 15 February 2020 21:21 (four years ago) link

yeah, all of the gameplay is so smooth and pleasant. I really do need to start concentrating on only a couple of games at once. I switch so much I get all bobbled with the different controls.

Yerac, Sunday, 16 February 2020 05:04 (four years ago) link

that's one of the reasons I'm loathe to start new games - learning all the different controls all over again

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Sunday, 16 February 2020 09:47 (four years ago) link

As far as FPS go, "Hunt: Showdown" looks like a, er, blast.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 16:03 (four years ago) link

huh, it's by Crytek. Interesting
