gotta go w Facebook. outside of Fox I suspect it’s had the biggest influence on turning aging whites’ brains into spoiled mayonnaise

Funnily enough, I was just looking at Facebook and noticed that one of my friends was talking to one of his (FB) friends, who happened to be Graham Lewis of Wire, who seems to post on FB all the time - he's the right age group apparently. Should I hate, or have mixed feelings about, Facebook now for keeping Graham Lewis (and Colin Newman, he's on there too) from posting on ILX?

Maybe its a perception of being way more public here? Which would be right? One can filter and lock and so on on FB at least. I mean I spent 6 months talking on the regular to Ian Crause a few years back on FB/email, but he almost never showed up here.

I haven't updated WhatsApp in ages, and now I've got a new phone so everything's installing again, and it's now 'WhatsApp Messenger' 'from Facebook' - was it always like this and/or has anything changed? Old news articles say Facebook wants to merge WhatsApp & FB Messenger, and I hate FB Messenger with the passion of a thousand firey suns, so would like to know before I install WA if it's gone to shit.

I'm getting tired of seeing people I like on twitter seeming to seriously advocate murder and other extremely violent solutions. Most of the time I imagine they were just extremely angry and wouldn't stick to it if you asked about it seriously but then there's all these "not even joking" tweets. For fucks sake.

Losing respect for almost everyone but still need to get along.

Moving the Overton on choppy bois might be the only good sociological effect of twitter.

I should maybe check more often if these people delete those tweets later on, but I never see anyone apologize.

Also: massive sweeping statements about groups of people that have nothing to do with any serious thinking about privilege.

Very few people seem to have learned that "it's just a joke" shouldn't fly anymore.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 28 March 2020 23:57 (four years ago) link

people shouldn't joke about having tory scum executed like vermin, it's a serious business is liquidating scum of the earth!

I've said "they probably don't mean that and are probably nice" too many times for people in my social circles. Benefit of the doubt is important but I don't know why I gave it to strangers so often.

Why would anyone apologize for joking (“joking”) about guillotining billionaires?

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Thursday, 2 April 2020 06:33 (four years ago) link

Too much violent fantasies give a sense that any real change is hopeless and we're reduced to childishness that won't gain us any advantage, might turn lots of people away. Comes across creepy too. Joking about executing the royal family might have been funny for a moment but when it persists it's just sounds the joker has a serious problem.

Peeing in the shower does not feel good, the lack of contrast between my urine and the water is unsettling.

I'll say it again: it's amazing how poor twitter and instagram are for browsing. I'm irritated within a short time of being there.

then proceed to shit up instagram with screenshots of the same shit they used to post on facebook on their notes app

and none of them seem to have any awareness that instagram is owned by facebook

Envy is one of those unavoidable human traits I nevertheless consciously try to avoid. I don't find it useful, productive or endearing to be envious of people or to compare myself to others: We all walk our own paths, right? We all have our good and bad days, our pros and cons. If someone is doing well for themselves and it doesn't affect my own or anyone else's wellbeing, then why should I feel anything but gladness and pride for them?

But since I've started to promote nights again, I've had to use Instagram a lot more. I'm telling you, it takes only about five minutes of scrolling before I start to feel preternaturally low about myself and, I dare say, a small amount of resentment towards the people making me feel this way.

It's almost... as if... social media is an opiate designed to make people feel tremendously insecure about themselves while also hooking them in like a drug. Now there's an original thought.

I've recently been on Twitter a bit too and man, that place doesn't really make me feel 'envious' in the same way but it does make me feel like I ought to have strong opinions on topics and matters I otherwise wouldn't necessarily consider. And then presently I feel like less of a person because I haven't got a hot take about the new Ghostbusters movie, or what some judge in Texas has decreed, or what some rightwing loudmouth has to say about gender pronouns. It's a bombardment of information and opinions and arguments and it makes the world seem even more bonkers and noisy and horrid than it already is. It makes me feel small, worthless, clueless: less of a person for not getting stuck into these endless discussions.

This might sound strange coming from someone who has spent more than half his life on ILX and is an obsessive Facebooker. But on those platforms I don't really get these feelings of self-loathing, envy, or a push-pull desire to participate in a dog-race I'll never win.

I don't personally understand why someone would leave Facebook but stay on Instagram. Whatever floats your boat ofc, but for all its faults, with FB I feel like I'm in a fairly safe, relatively private space where I talk just to people I know or visit groups that discuss topics I'm interested in; whereas I feel like the other two big platforms seem to be more about surreptitious self promotion: With Insta it's about what a wonderful life you live, Twitter it's how clever and informed you are. Those two seem to be about guerilla oneupmanship, and that's why I can't really enjoy them too much

I’m not on Twitter much and Facebook not at all, but insta is great if you have (or stumble upon) niche interests, like miniatures, or Japanese storefront photography, or pixel art, and so on.
