Not sure what to think of the Beatrice Dillon record yet. It seems studiously disinterested in sound design (although it's so dry that it probably sounds amazing on a loud system). I like the rigor of only using one bpm and having some strict limits on sounds & approach, but this will probably work better as one quirky track popping up in a mix vs a full album listen.

huh i like that album. good mix of electronic sounds and analog(-sounding) sounds

na (NA), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 15:55 (four years ago) link

it’s good! but a little academic. im old enough to remember when deconstructed meant lots of breaking glass sounds

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Tuesday, 11 February 2020 18:12 (four years ago) link

id say the Dillon is ‘electronica’ rather than ... the titular genre. for me, the latter is a descendant of a constellation of uk styles (weightless grime being a huge precursor) and sort of forges an experimental ethos from within the club tradition rather than foisting external experimental traditions into club (that’s electronica for me). im sure that distinction isn’t as tidy as that but it’s something ive been ruminating on. the fisherian “pulp modernist” slant to this inchoate genre is what i like about it

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Thursday, 13 February 2020 00:13 (four years ago) link

I like that. Also wow, I just read this today:
https://dotheastralplane.com/2020/02/12/all-that-is-solid-melts-into-business-techno/#more-11438

New modernist formulations are needed and dance music is rife with potential...In the next part of this essay, I’d like to dive further into music that represents a new, capacious modernism. Across several essays, the late Mark Fisher, elucidated a conception of a pulp modernism that embraces the grotesque, the weird and a “heteroglossic riot of styles and tones.” Fisher’s original essay referred to The Fall, but the ideas within can be applied to a far more dynamic range of contemporary music. More on that tomorrow.

The gqom thing reminded me - I posted this on Rolling Afro back in February:

Desire Marea (half of queer duo FAKA) dropped an album last month with experimental art pop. There’s a video for “You Think I’m Horny”, but check out highlights like “Zibuyile Izimakade” and “Tavern Kween” as well.
Pitchfork reviewed it, favourably. There must be other suitable threads for this - not sure which ones though. It’s probably not clubby enough for Jordan’s (post-)Reconstructed Club Music thread. Anyone have any ideas?

Not gqom, but South African, and on second thought it might actually fit here, some of the tracks anyway - experimental: yes, art: yes, pop: scratch that. Check also "Thokozani".

from that Pitchfork review: "on Desire, their exploration of the divine takes them in a many-splendored multitude of stylistic directions, often within the span of a single track: liturgical drone, galloping club beats, existential noise."

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Friday, 10 July 2020 19:30 (three years ago) link

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Friday, 10 July 2020 21:53 (three years ago) link

Not really. My guess was that the subby kicks and claps were sampled and the drummer was just playing all the clattery inbetween stuff, but from this video it looks fully live:

Industrial techno, I guess? I enjoyed their debut, looking forward to the EP.

pomenitul, Sunday, 29 November 2020 21:57 (three years ago) link

It's too weird to be industrial techno, I think. That's there, sure, but there's also the Sewn Leather/DJ Dog Dick noise punk/grind thing, the more refined digital hardcore of the late 90s and early 2000s, and some dare I say OPN-like vibes on the debut. The track above is definitely not the best representation, but I love it still
