Oh, I like that place.

I also like joint bank accounts.

Figaro gone

gabbneb, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

casting ill health to the wind, i braved the shack, and an hour on a nice night was worth it for a stack

in other news, I now live 2 blocks from a taco truck!

gabbneb, Saturday, 14 June 2008 02:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i ordered from what must be the worst thai restaurant i have ever had, udom thai in prospect heights. the duck salad was made from chicken! so fucking shameful. and it also tasted like it had cold spaghetti sauce in it. i don't even know what that was supposed to be, but spaghetti sauce, cashews, soggy fried chicken pieces, and iceburg lettuce = the most pathetic attempt at thai food i've ever seen. and i've eaten thai foor in suburban new england.

bell_labs, Saturday, 14 June 2008 03:08 (fifteen years ago) link

lol

I don't know if it's worst ever but we ordered udom for takeout once ... not so hot

The two stand-out meals I ate over the past two weeks in NYC took place at: Casa Mono (RAZOR CLAMS!) and Jade Asian Restaurant in Flushing.

G00blar, Saturday, 14 June 2008 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

ive been wanting to try casa mono, though heard that the wait times can be ridiculous and its super packed and uncomfortable.. also, how much was it?

i havent been eating well lately... saving money for the tasting menu at eleven madison park again. mmmm

phil-two, Saturday, 14 June 2008 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Most of the dishes are in the $12-15 range; we probably got 10 of them for five of us. I have to admit I don't know what the total bill was, as my brother and his wife were buying (a very belated engagement dinner they claimed they owed us).

G00blar, Saturday, 14 June 2008 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, thats it? that sounds like a bargain. 10 dishes for 5 people was enough? maybe i should finally give it a shot. thanks! love razor clams, but have only had it prepared cantonese style... is it just thrown on the grill there? err, i mean on the planxa?

phil-two, Saturday, 14 June 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

yes planxa yes delicious YES

also great: sweetbreads, lamb, sardines, duck egg.

G00blar, Saturday, 14 June 2008 20:48 (fifteen years ago) link

on my way to WD-50

dan selzer, Saturday, 14 June 2008 21:40 (fifteen years ago) link

dont get wet

phil-two, Saturday, 14 June 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Natalie Portman was at the table next to us.

dan selzer, Sunday, 15 June 2008 15:45 (fifteen years ago) link

casa mono can be a little cramped (got seated at the end of the bar once and waiters kept bumping me) but the food's pretty great, co-sign on the razor clams

also spicy grilled pork with pickled watermelon

dmr, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

how was wd-50? been there once w/ mixed results

dmr, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

mixed results, though my entree was the best.

Pork Belly with caper emulsion, capers, sunchoke and ancho crusted pineapple or something.

dan selzer, Sunday, 15 June 2008 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

My favorite just closed: Col Legno -- a great little Italian place on East 9th.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 15 June 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

my favorite everyday-sushi place, Kirara, closed... so sad. it was by far the best non-high-end sushi in new york :( :( (:

phil-two, Sunday, 15 June 2008 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link

From my last Trip, Minca Ramen on 5th between A and B, the most awesome char siu pork and the freshest tastiest daikon salad.

I am excited for the opening of Curry-ya (Japanese-style curry) in a week or so (brought to us by the Rai Rai Ken/Soba-ya/ etc. etc empire. It's right next door to Rai Rai Ken and looks ready to go.

Virginia Plain, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Japanese curry scares me, no food should be that shiny.

Ed, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:49 (fifteen years ago) link

col legno RIP. it was a great place.

phil, after i teach you to cook we should celebrate at casa mono (or perhaps bar jamon next door).

lauren, Sunday, 15 June 2008 22:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Casa Mono is one of my favorite restaurants in NY, but the tables are so tight. I try to go between 2-5pm not that they're open all day.

I've had one very good meal at wd~50, but my last time there was probably the most dispassionate meal I've ever had at that pricepoint. Uncoordinated service, assembly line feel, no manager in sight. I'll probably never go back.

I DIED, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:06 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah im so looking forward to being able to actually make something for myself... and yeah, casa mono or bar jamon sounds great!

phil-two, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

yah, both places are so tiny. i walk by around 5ish pretty often, though, and that seems like a good time to go.

lauren, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i usually eat lunch around 3 or 4 anyways

phil-two, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:13 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah we probably won't go back to wd-50 either. my meal was decent but my wife hated her entree (some kinda fish with "cocoa nibs" in the sauce, very weird texture and taste)

we almost bailed out from the very beginning when we arrived at 5:55 for our 6 o'clock reservation. restaurant is supposed to open at 6. we go in and they said we're not ready yet, come back in 20 minutes and sent us to a bar down the street. my mouth almost dropped open. but it was for a birthday and we didn't have any backup plan so we decided to stick it out.

I was pretty surprised when Bruni bumped them up from 2 to 3 stars. for the amount you're paying I think it's a crap shoot on whether you get something amazing vs. a bunch of "works in progress" that don't taste that great.

dmr, Sunday, 15 June 2008 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

lunch @ di fara pizza today. TOTALLY lived up to the legend. and my son loved it, basil, cheese and all. YAY.

looks so good! ^^

carne asada, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Mmmmm.

Forgot to mention that I had a pretty perfect plate of pasta at Little Giant while that crazy thunderstorm raged outside.

G00blar, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Last night I had the steak at Aurora (@ Grand and Wythe) ... it levitated!

My favorite Japanese bakery Panya got closed by the health department :(
I don't mind that there may have been mice baking my curry pans.

saudade, Thursday, 19 June 2008 23:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Wha...? Are they gonna reopen?

Virginia Plain, Friday, 20 June 2008 03:16 (fifteen years ago) link

They'll probably reopen. Usually what happens in these situations is the restaurant has to renovate and exterminate to bring itself into compliance and then they have a repeat inspection before being given the green light.

saudade, Saturday, 21 June 2008 13:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Had a nice surprise at Mamajuana in Inwood - sort of an upscale Dominican restaurant. It was much more of a big-hunk-of-meat and fruity cocktail place than I usually eat at and probably never would have gone in if friends hadn't brought us, but the food was good to excellent. Had paella and lamb in mint chimichurri sauce.

quick where to get (reasonably priced, i.e. not $4 apiece) oysters in or near east village?

bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Essex, on the L.E.S. You might get hepatitis since June has no "R", but at least you won't overpay.

felicity, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:33 (fifteen years ago) link

oh wait i thought it was the other way around with the Rs? why would i not want to eat delicious raw oysters in the summer?

Best Pizza in New York: http://www.unapizza.com/
Also fucking expensive: 21 for a single person pie. I eat here every chance I get, about twice a month.

eager to try this new place in my hood called James, looks $$$ but seriously good

http://thestrongbuzz.com/buzz/details.php?item_id=398

opened a couple days ago in the space that used to be Sorrel

dmr, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Blue Ribbon Brasserie on Sullivan between Spring and Prince has the best raw bar in downtown and it's not too crazy expensive IMO but it's tiny.

Balthazar on Spring has a bigger raw bar but it's a little pricier.

Both are in pretty, pretty blocks for a nice summer's evening walk.

xp

I think historically it was something about not being able to refrigerate them but I think that's no longer an issue.

felicity, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i thought sorrel was pretty lame xpost

bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought it was aight. couldn't understand why it was always empty.

dmr, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:43 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe because the portions were tinnnnnnnnnnnnnny

bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:44 (fifteen years ago) link

25 bucks for 3 courses is cheap tho. but I guess it's no bargain if yr still hungry

dmr, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Essex has a weekly lobster night that is fun and a good deal. Maybe it's Wednesday?

felicity, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Is the blue ribbon brasserie the bar opposite their bakery?
