I don't think that takes away from eephus's point. The joke "works" because it relies on and reinforces her followers' negative opinion of Clinton.

The Biden/Bernie age gap in the Democratic Party continues to be absolutely WILD. Per latest @QuinnipiacPoll Biden wins 5x as many senior Dems as Sanders. Sanders meanwhile wins 17x (!!!) more under 35s than Biden. pic.twitter.com/d0UVsjtYec

that's some pretty amazing data on both ends -- for it to be really useful wd need more raw numbers (of total voters, how many are in the "younger" tier and how many in the "older"? ) but just by itself it's important imo

It really seemed to clear to me three months ago that Elizabeth Warren was perfectly positioned to be taken up by leftists, pussy hat-wearers, Obamanauts, Clintonistas, everybody -- I'm not saying everybody has to love Elizabeth Warren but that the plainly wrong "Elizabeth Warren is actually a Republican" position plus the plainly wrong "Elizabeth Warren is poised to wreck the economy with her radical hare-brained free lunch schemes" position together occupy at least half of the primary electorate makes me profoundly depressed.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 15:43 (four years ago) link

Maybe I overstate the case, Warren still does extremely well on the "first choice + second choice" question, for all the good it does her.

What does this actually mean?

Also, like it or not, the Democratic Party in 2020 fundamentally relies on coalitions. It's a big-tent party: multi-racial and ideologically diverse. It seems self-evident that a candidate who can appeal to a range of factions within the party would be valuable.

I don’t know how much my own experience applies to the rest of the electorate but my issue with Warren is less with her policies, not at all with her party ID in the 80s, just that she’s been running an increasingly poor, incoherent campaign. What I’ve seen of her political instincts makes me think she’d be a disastrous nominee against Trump; I don’t think she’d be able to keep Trump from completely controlling what the election is about.

Also foreign policy, I don’t get the sense she has any solid principles there, Sanders is really the only one I’d trust not to put in the same old crew to run things.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 16:50 (four years ago) link

fwiw, I finally had a conversation with a relative about the primary that I’d been mildly dreading since they are a former republican and I was pretty sure, and conventional “the party is moving too far left!!!” wisdom would affirm, that it was going to be them selling me on biden. but it was instead largely about how they don’t trust him (they didn’t have a clear favorite, though if I had to guess I’d guess either warren - they didn’t think she could win but did mention her first, unprompted - or sanders, where concern was his age, to which I said everyone was old. but the fact that their least-worst preferences were also the two most progressive is, I think, something, since I doubt this relative is a special unique electoral anomaly in how they think

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 17:03 (four years ago) link

tl;dr the hand-waving freakoutery about how a progressive can’t win because they’re being progressive is divorced from how non-pundits assess candidates, but we knew that

I feel like a lot of the objection to Warren on this is because she released a detailed plan that called for a transition to Medicare for All, instead of just promising it outright. If M4A is adopted, it will necessarily require a transition of some sort. Perhaps it's the case that the particular policies she proposes make it less likely for M4A to ultimately come to fruition, but I hear that criticism less than the claim that she can no longer be trusted because she's not pure enough on the issue.
