bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:36 (four years ago) link

can confirm the ratboys record is fuckin awesome

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:37 (four years ago) link

lastly I mentioned it on the punk/non-indie thread but the Chubby and the Gang record is melodic enough for pop-punkers to roll with, I think

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:39 (four years ago) link

oh speaking of bands that don't quite fit this thread but i'm posting them anyway, is anybody here a bad enough dude to be down with knock over city

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:43 (four years ago) link

this is great, gruff delivery reminds me of my beloved drug church a bit

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 24 January 2020 23:04 (four years ago) link

y'all

this Ratboys album

i thought they were gonna be better than most of their contemporaries based on GN and this record delivers on that

alpine static, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 22:19 (four years ago) link

otm, it's a goddamn achievement, i may start a thread

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 January 2020 00:03 (four years ago) link

it isn't out for a month though! is that going too far

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 January 2020 00:03 (four years ago) link

i guess i do that all the time but it feels mean when i've heard the album before everyone else lol

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 30 January 2020 00:18 (four years ago) link

For the love of God, people, go see Drug Church live.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Monday, 3 February 2020 05:21 (four years ago) link

Thrice with mewithoutYou, Drug Church and Holy Fawn

So unfair, America.

Meanwhile, the new Spanish Love Songs album is killing me.

how come?

alpine static, Thursday, 13 February 2020 20:44 (four years ago) link

vulture sat on it for a year which diminished my enthusiasm for it, but i'm glad it exists now. also i have no idea what my blurbs are like anymore

they're good, Brad.

if anyone is nostalgic for catchy hairpin-turn pop-punk, I recommend the new Pears singles (and their last album and split LP with Direct Hit, for that matter).

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 14:55 (four years ago) link

simon have you heard the loathe record

it's more appropriate for the metal thread than here but also, in a way, it isn't

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:54 (four years ago) link

YES it's really good! I actually thought about bumping one of the Deftones threads because parts are almost criminally similar and it should appeal to anyone who's impatiently waiting for the new album. I'm not convinced by all of the djent-y bits but I'm impressed with the scope.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:56 (four years ago) link

I thought simon had bumped this thread telling you all the Pup album placed in metal poll

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 16:57 (four years ago) link

oh I knew that was going to happen (one of the reasons I was fine w not voting for it)

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 17:04 (four years ago) link

another thing that could qualify for the metal thread: the new envy record is uh so fucking good???

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 February 2020 21:11 (four years ago) link

it really is. a lot more metal than Pup though

gman59, Tuesday, 25 February 2020 21:43 (four years ago) link

It is v v good, feel like it flew under the radar. The curse of consistency.

the least exhilarating of the singles so far but still really nice.

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Friday, 28 February 2020 16:09 (four years ago) link

Envy usually make the metal poll. in fact a single made last years iirc

Oor Neechy, Friday, 28 February 2020 16:14 (four years ago) link

I like this recent Ratboys album (posting here b/c it's mentioned above; tho I wouldn't have thought to classify it in one of the thread title's genres).

Some of it reminds a little of old-school Sleepyhead (that dreamy, love-rock feel)... some tracks also have a bit of a Big Thief sound, like if their first album had been even poppier (though it may be the singer's vocal tone that's largely leading me there).

tamagotchi revival artist (morrisp), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 18:18 (four years ago) link

...actually, no, it's more than just her voice. The guitar sound too

tamagotchi revival artist (morrisp), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 18:21 (four years ago) link

ratboys are kind of part of the "scene." if i've ever seen a band play the fest, they belong in this thread

this album in fact absolutely slays

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Thursday, 12 March 2020 13:32 (four years ago) link

I'm surprised at the BNM for the Dogleg album - it's a fine debut but didn't feel that distinguished to me at least on one listen

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2020 12:48 (four years ago) link

much more up my alley: Wednesday's I Was Trying To Describe You to Someone, found via my Discover playlist. lovely hazy depressive bedroom-and-garage emo with elements of slowcore and some surprising little turns. features a song called "Maura" for extra ILM points.

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Monday, 16 March 2020 13:23 (four years ago) link

the dogleg is very listenable

j., Tuesday, 17 March 2020 01:41 (four years ago) link

i agree w/ Simon ... it's a really good album! and that score is an over-correction. but that's ok.

alpine static, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 05:49 (four years ago) link

if anyone missed it last year, this is a good time to check out Fred Thomas's doom-laden ambient emo maybe-masterpiece Aftering which sounds especially great right now

brechtian social distancing (Simon H.), Saturday, 21 March 2020 18:43 (four years ago) link

A couple listens in to that Dogleg album and I'm really enjoying it.

Ross Robinson, emo king

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 October 2020 22:54 (three years ago) link

I'll stand behind that. Relationship of Command, Burn Piano Island, and now Lament. He has a lot of credits under his belt that I don't care for but its undeniable that he had a major role in some of my absolute favorite albums ever made.

gman59, Wednesday, 21 October 2020 19:36 (three years ago) link

soupy from the wonder years confirmed the fireworks album is coming out this year. i sure hope so

brad you were not lying about the Black Foxxes album! what a huge step up for them.

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Thursday, 29 October 2020 17:10 (three years ago) link

Oh I have to wait 4 hours, grr

imago, Thursday, 29 October 2020 19:36 (three years ago) link

Yeah, this is great, even if Badlands towers above all

imago, Friday, 30 October 2020 11:19 (three years ago) link

weirdly I'm only not totally sold on the epic closer? otherwise this is definitely scratching the neo-90s-altrock itch that Wolf Alice does for me

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Saturday, 31 October 2020 22:44 (three years ago) link

inner space rock

imago, Sunday, 1 November 2020 05:56 (three years ago) link

it is a bit Radiohead for me to completely love it but I can see why Brad likes Panic so much, haha. And that last minute is an almighty payoff

the first four tracks are my favourite stretch because I'm an instant gratification junkie lol

imago, Sunday, 1 November 2020 15:22 (three years ago) link

but that was the case with the Foxing album as well and I ended up loving all of it

imago, Sunday, 1 November 2020 15:23 (three years ago) link

the fox bands need to do an album together

imago, Sunday, 1 November 2020 15:23 (three years ago) link

I also really like the closing track but my favourite bit of it is the songy opening stretch

imago, Sunday, 1 November 2020 15:46 (three years ago) link

two weeks pass...

update: I have now listened to Black Foxxes a frankly embarrassing number of times

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 14:18 (three years ago) link

^^^same

imago, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:55 (three years ago) link

Is there not a way to get a physical version of that Black Foxxes record in the US? Even when I go to their website and click on the literal pictures of the LP or CD versions in their shop, it kicks me to a link that only takes me to streaming/digital ways to get it.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

it appears we have not talked about this band in this thread:

https://clearbody.bandcamp.com/album/one-more-day-2

album out Friday, good chunky rumbling, slightly dreamy punk/emo with vocals that remind me of other (older) bands but i can't quite place ... especially the use of looooooong, held out notes/syllables. i feel like there's a really close 80s/90s analog, but i'm having trouble figuring it out.

alpine static, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 16:31 (three years ago) link

a very fun and economical pop-punk/emo album from this year I had missed: Teenage Halloween's s/t

Also ... did I miss the 2021 thread?

alpine static, Tuesday, 5 January 2021 22:58 (three years ago) link

Not sure of the protocol with the jump to the new thread, but finally got around to the Black Foxxes record. This is terrific. I haven't kept up with everything itt, but this and the new Ratboys records were huge discoveries for me this year thanks to you folks.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 12 January 2021 20:52 (three years ago) link

the protocol is to wait for brad to do it lol

i think when all is said and done i've decided the Ratboys record is the best emo thread record of 2020

Does Portrayal of Guilt count? Their tracks from the upcoming album are excellent. I guess they are more screamo than emo, but I wouldn't dare to post this in the metal thread.
