i’m sure there’s a book or article, maybe multiple, that addresses my questions below on the sociology of the nfl fandom, what is it?

what is more illogical, allegiance to an nfl team by “stadium geography,” or allegiance to any nfl team at all?

are we more accurately described as allies of our fellow fan-groups, or are we fans of coach-player groups? Or of logos? Or are we committed to owner/mgmt/coach biz “projects”?

Florida has a ton of transplant fans, which is probably why all three teams have trouble selling out their games. Everybody moving here to retire or for lower cost of living means we get lots of Jet fans (despicable), Cowboys fans, just fans from all over.

The allegiances in Florida at least somewhat depend on when you started watching football, where you live, and how many Florida teams existed at the time.

I live nowhere near Miami, but I became a Dolphins fan because my grandpa, a Giants fan who lived in NY, moved to FL, and decided to adopt an AFC team. At the time, the only Florida team was the Fins, so that was easy. by the time I was born, the Bucs existed but lived nowhere near us, and it was creamsicle era terribleness, so it became a way we bonded, watching the Dolphins together.

prior to the Jags, NFL fans seemed to gravitate towards Miami over TAmpa Bay cos Marino and also always in playoff contention, the Bucs were terrible. once the Dungy era started and they became good, a lot more people broke for Tampa Bay (or the ones in hiding came back), and once the Jags showed up...idk, idk if I recall the state EVER being fanatical about this team, just Duval county, who finally didn't have to travel 3 -5 hours to see a game. it did siphon away a bit from each team.

weirdly though I always felt like more of a Marino fan than a Dolphins fan growing up, to the point that when there were rumors after he was let go by Miami that he would wind up in Minnesota, I considered jumping to be a Vikes fan. never happened though.

I personally don't get the idea of abandoning an old team because you move. I do get adding a new team to root for though. like my grandpa did.

should say Tampa was much closer to me growing up than Miami, but I followed in my grandpa's footsteps. when I go to games I usually have a moment where I'm going to my seat where I look up and say his name. we never got to go to one together.

geographic pride + before red zone etc your local team was the only one whose game you could see every week

though i do know a guy who grew up roughly equidistant from pittsburgh, cleveland and buffalo who became a cowboys fan 'because they were always on tv'

i have found it harder to care abt Chicago sports since moving to L.A., i kinda cut myself off from following the teams there religiously like i used to (btw i follow the NBA and have a Bulls cap but it's almost entirely red so i stopped wearing it out as much after a few too many double takes from ppl) and while i still keep one eye on the Cubs i feel like my watch has somewhat ended now that they won the series in my lifetime. so when my brother calls to enthuse about Patrick Kane scoring his 1,000th career point for the Blackhawks i frantically try to remember who he is. since this is an NFL thread i'll add that it's extremely easy to ignore the Bears and i've also stopped watching the games and playing fantasy football but i still enjoy following the stats and the drama and i'll catch games if i'm out sometimes.

also w/r/t the NFL in L.A. it's very easy to ignore, even now that there's a team here again.

Aaron Rodgers‘ comments about his Christian upbringing and questioning his faith have raised a lot of eyebrows — especially those of his estranged family.

During an intimate conversation with girlfriend Danica Patrick on her Pretty Intense podcast, Green Bay Packers quarterback said that he had trouble connecting with his religious community as a child.

“Most people that I knew, church was just… you just had to go,” the Super Bowl XLV champion recalled.

But Rodgers’ family was not impressed with his candid comments, a source tells PEOPLE.

“They were dismayed,” says the insider. “The family is very dedicated to their Christian faith.”

“To them, his comments are basically a slap in the face to the fundamentals of who they are. It’s basically him turning his back on everything they have taught him.”

Rogers, 36, has been estranged from his family – including Bachelorette star Jordan Rodgers – for several years. He has not spoken publicly about the reasons behind the estrangement, but the insider tells people that religion is a part of it.

“The feeling is that Aaron has really turned his back on them,” says the insider. “There’s clearly a lot more to it, but that’s how he is perceived by his family.”

“His comments are very hurtful to the family,” says the insider, who says that the family “still loves Aaron very much,” but disagrees with him about fundamental things. “They have these times where things start to thaw out, but then something like this happens, and then it’s back to square one. It’s sad.”

In a 2017 interview with the New York Times, the family patriarch, Ed Rodgers, said that “fame can change things,” and that Aaron allegedly stopped talking to his family members at the end of 2014, shortly after he began dating actress Olivia Munn.

During the Pretty Intense podcast, Rodgers told Patrick that he has gone down a path to a “different type of spirituality” that is more meaningful to him than what he experienced as a child.

“I don’t know how you can believe in a God who wants to condemn most of the planet to a fiery hell,” he said. “What type of loving, sensitive, omnipresent, omnipotent being wants to condemn his beautiful creation to a fiery hell at the end of all this?”

Rodgers did not specifically refer to himself as an atheist, but he said that religion can divide people.

“Religion can be a crutch, it can be something that people have to have to make themselves feel better,” Rodgers continued. “Because it’s set up binary, it’s us and them, saved and unsaved, heaven and hell, it’s enlightened and heathen, it’s holy and righteous … that makes a lot of people feel better about themselves.”

I hope they win and Jimmy G. only throws 4 passes this time.

I'm kinda thinking now SF should win, but I'd rather KC get a title than SF, even though I love the running back based offense. I still hate the Niners for being good for two decades and beating the Bears and Bengals a few times when it mattered.

Plus I think the Steelers, Niners and Pats all having 6 Superbowl titles would have to be considered a sign of the Apocalypse.
