True, true. Apologies rescinded.

Ha, I didn't even recognize Meadow Soprano!

pplains, Tuesday, 21 January 2020 18:27 (four years ago) link

two months pass...

stayed at home with Beef House last night and I'm glad I did cause it was the most fun I had staying at home since I stayed at home every Friday night from 1989 to 1997 with my friends Carl, Harriette, Eddie, Laura, Judy, Richie, Rachel, Estelle, Waldo Faldo (occasionally), Myra (from 1993 until her tragic death in 1998), and of course who could forget Steve :)

Meadow Soprano totes the voice of reason in the house.

I am kinda ashamed of how hard I laughed at ep 2 of Beef House.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Monday, 6 April 2020 16:48 (four years ago) link

Ep. 1 - oh I get it, but I don't think I can watch this.

Ep. 2 - shit pipe

Ep. 3 - literally died laughing. had to get my brain remapped to post this.

pplains, Sunday, 19 April 2020 01:09 (three years ago) link

Okay, got it on the dvr, had a couple beers, guess I'm finally going in.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Sunday, 19 April 2020 01:24 (three years ago) link

i'm putting down money tonight to watch 2 & 3, not because I want to know what can remap a brain, but because I need to know what shit pipe means

Don’t usually like their gross out humor but ep 2 had me dying

Let’s just say I blew two loads that night

frogbs, Sunday, 3 May 2020 16:15 (three years ago) link

This show is the funniest thing on TV right now.

A White, White Gay (cryptosicko), Sunday, 3 May 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

Looks like this was the season finale. What a cliffhanger!

A White, White Gay (cryptosicko), Monday, 4 May 2020 17:21 (three years ago) link

I like how it's not spoofing sitcoms in general but rather the late seasons of sitcoms where it's not clear any more what the premises of the show is, half the punchlines are weird inside jokes, and all the characters are just one or two grossly exaggerated traits

frogbs, Tuesday, 5 May 2020 20:35 (three years ago) link

quite ironical that the man famous for his song-and-dance cautioning about the gastrointestinal dangers of consuming spoiled meat would use a diarrhea pipe for his mayonnaise pipe

this song from the new Tim Heidecker solo album is uh...really good?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvDssCCJT5c

frogbs, Wednesday, 23 September 2020 19:42 (three years ago) link

Yeah that's really nice.

But I generally have a hard time responding to Tim's music.

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Saturday, 26 September 2020 19:20 (three years ago) link

Didn't know he had a new album out. That's a great track. Is that Weyes Blood on vocals (from a quick google)? He definitely writes some great songs. I absolutely adore 'When I Get Up' from the previous album.

brain (krakow), Saturday, 26 September 2020 21:50 (three years ago) link

"Fear of Death is a Serious Album about Serious Topics..."

On the basis of that one track, I'll take this statement at face value (perhaps not wise) and I'm keen to hear more.

brain (krakow), Saturday, 26 September 2020 22:02 (three years ago) link

I think most of his music is pretty serious. the Heidecker & Wood stuff seemed to lean into its AOR campiness sometimes but I think his three solo albums are all pretty genuine. and based off one listen on Bandcamp I think this is clearly the best of the three

certainly he's not the first comedian to have a go at "serious" music but he might be the first one whose brand of comedy is particularly dry, where you kind of have to look for the jokes, which I think has led a lot of people to listen to his music for the wrong reasons.

frogbs, Sunday, 27 September 2020 00:14 (three years ago) link

'What The Broken-Hearted Do' is the album I know, so commenting in terms of that, I take it as both serious/genuine and playful at the same time. I think there is definitely some of that dry humour you mention at work and a deliberate ambiguity to it, which I enjoy. Mainly when I listen to it though I just enjoy it at pretty much face value - I like the tunes etc.

brain (krakow), Sunday, 27 September 2020 11:18 (three years ago) link

yeah agreed with that

listened to it a few more times, definitely made the leap from "pretty good for a comedian" to "actually good" on this one

frogbs, Monday, 28 September 2020 16:02 (three years ago) link

dare I say it is as good as the Yellow River Boys album

frogbs, Monday, 28 September 2020 16:03 (three years ago) link

Even going way back to the music on Awesome Show - Great Job, Tim's music has always been decent to great. He can make a throwaway song like Decker's "Our Values Are Under Attack" an earworm for the ages.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 28 September 2020 16:29 (three years ago) link

you wave a flag on christmas day, they'll throw you in jail!

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 28 September 2020 16:32 (three years ago) link

Decker's gonna get laid mon

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 28 September 2020 16:46 (three years ago) link

listened to some of these songs and can't help wondering if ppl would be digging it if it weren't Tim

Really the vocals are so up front in the mix, which can be cool I guess with a good singer...but...I don't get it. His phrasing and emphases seem just kind of sloppy and rote. I appreciate some of the flourishes and other aspects of the production but I'm just not sure where the hooks are here that it's meriting so much high praise?

Anyway also not big into Warren Zevon or Randy Newman, and those seem to be his touchstones, so probably just me

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 9 October 2020 15:16 (three years ago) link

he kinda went all out on this new video, even got himself a snazzy vintage non-Padres San Diego ballcap

song is completely forgettable imo but video is fun to look at

the burrito that defined a generation, Friday, 9 October 2020 15:19 (three years ago) link

Yeah that song, I don't mind earnest Tim, but as <trenchant> lyrics go...oof

This guy has given me countless hours of joy over the years so I feel weird slagging him off, and he should do whatever he feels like doing...I just hope he doesn't become convinced that *this* is where his talent lies at the expense of so much genius elsewhere

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 9 October 2020 15:24 (three years ago) link

Still haven't heard a note from the album that betters "Brick By Brick"

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 9 October 2020 15:25 (three years ago) link

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say this guy is a big fan of Harry Nilsson

frogbs, Friday, 9 October 2020 15:26 (three years ago) link

Nilsson is his favoritev artist after the Beatles I think

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 9 October 2020 15:28 (three years ago) link

lyrics are very DO YOU SEE? like, can someone really even ever *own* land, maaaan?

I'm glad he's having fun but frankly I have more fun when his songs are about drinking your own piss

the burrito that defined a generation, Friday, 9 October 2020 15:31 (three years ago) link

His lyrics are so unwaveringly matter of fact that when he started making non-comedy music I think almost everyone was looking for his trademark drydecker parody underneath it somewhere. And part of it is the production as Hadrian said. The upfront vocals somewhat resemble how his comedy songs are mixed in Awesome show etc. So combined with the commonplace lyrics there's nothing transcendent. Just straightforward song arrangements and subject matter with a plain-speaking approach.

Evan, Friday, 9 October 2020 15:54 (three years ago) link

yeah I remember watching the video for "Work From Home" on youtube and it seemed like all the comments at that time were from adult swim fans who didnt quite get it, like "lololol this is hilarious, tim is the master of fucked up surreal satire, this is perfect!"

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Friday, 9 October 2020 16:07 (three years ago) link

Yes, everyone wanted to feel like they were in on it with him; as fans they totally "get it".

Evan, Friday, 9 October 2020 16:13 (three years ago) link

as a fan I'm ready to be disappointed by Moonbase 8 next month. between that, Space Force, and that new netflix doc series about the Challenger explosion, I feel like America is poised to be burnt out on astronaut comedy

the burrito that defined a generation, Friday, 9 October 2020 16:19 (three years ago) link

Didn't expect the Challenger doc to be hilarious, but I haven't watched it yet.

I'm jusice for Moonbase 8!

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 9 October 2020 16:24 (three years ago) link

juiced!

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 9 October 2020 16:24 (three years ago) link

xxp oh it's not! but for those willing to seek it out there are savory comedy undertones to the early-eighties fashion choices and NASA contractor office technology

the burrito that defined a generation, Friday, 9 October 2020 16:25 (three years ago) link

I'm confident it will be funnier than Space Force.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 October 2020 16:26 (three years ago) link

hopefully space force was funnier than the challenger doc though

Evan, Friday, 9 October 2020 16:27 (three years ago) link

one month passes...

first episode is on YouTube. it's pretty good though it clearly seems like one of those pilot episodes that gives you no real clue what the show is gonna be like. reminded me a bit of Bedtime Stories actually

frogbs, Thursday, 12 November 2020 18:06 (three years ago) link

i watched the first four episodes of Moonbase and I think it's terrible.
