Star Trek Discovery: The Bryan Fuller TV reboot

The Trouble with Edward one is a blast although apparently Star Trek isn't allowed to be funny.

Just watched it and yes, it's funny as hell.

two years later and series 1 has made it to terrestrial tv in the uk. am about 8 episodes in, but i've nothing really to say other than i'm disappointed that the DISCO shirts don't say VERY on the back.

I love the DISCO shirts.

it's currently only on E4 and has already been moved from 21:00 to 23:40 on sundays after 8 episodes.

this changed a lot around episode 9.

lol at episode 8 though. "Just one more jump before i retire..."

Hey I circled back to S1 recently & after being bored again for lije 3 eps shit turned a corner in ep9, am now on episode 11 and :D : D

It is remarkable how many series Fuller has started on then promptly bounced from, but since everything he kept working on is great and everything he abandoned (or was forced out of) turned out to be a mess I'm choosing to see this as a condemnation of the medium

I enjoyed the hell out of S2 but between this and Picard I think the notion that someone can make a contemporary Trek series is kind of a false premise. The days of running 7 seasons of 25 eps per year is long over, and all these shows are so plot heavy that you can't afford to have duff character eps in a 10 episode season that is all in service of the narrative arc.

That said, Pike was a legitimate great addition to ST lore and the actor played him well. I'd happily see a Pike-led TOS style show.

I don't get the love for Disco Pike! Shakey bafflingly called Picard a nullity but I think that title is more applicable to Pike.

Totally agree that Pike brought some clear TOS energy (not to mention some proper mature hotness, instead of being another of these callow bearded younglings that the Trek casting teams seem so in love with these days). But season two of Discovery is a boring mess.

Thought the second season was miles better and more fun, even if it missed Jason Isaacs’s weird whatever-it-was. The last ep was stupid, though.

Michael is the nullify for me, in the sense that Sonequa M-G always seems weirdly uncommitted - although she had a good chemistry w/Spock iirc. Also! Discovery Spock >>> Zachary Quinto

i watched the first few Enterprise episodes recently. seems to be entirely

1. vulcan lady is right about everything > captain whines, insists on doing something stupid, manages to half-assedly at least survive > vulcan lady begrudgingly starts to appreciate human stupidity

2. engineer has a bad accent, and not even amusingly like scotty

3. will the vulcan lady get her kit off in this ep

Happy to hear that Pike's getting his own show. I know nothing about Anson Mount but he made a meal out of what could have been a nothing part, so if they write some proper Trek stories it could be good.

hello i am 10 episodes into season 2 and here are my thoughts

1. Captain Pike forever

2. Could watch Michael & Spock play go-fuck-yourself-space-chess forever

3. Did it need to take EIGHT episodes to find Spock? Seriously, that drove me round the bend. But maybe I’m just impatient, the leadup episodes were decent.

4. Can we make Michelle Yeoh fight more? I love her so much

5. TALOS IV!!!!!!! So great.

6. Captain Pike forever. Also down with this Spock. Bring on the spinoff because I am so down with these two actors.

Disco 3 premiere is the sappiest thing I've seen in a while, and I loved it. Stoned Michael is a lot of fun.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this season in that it hopefully won't be as beholden to established canon as it's been in the first two seasons (and which Picard suggested from, too), which seemed like they were overcompensating (natch) for something and had to prove they were real Trek by throwing in as many references to previous series, instead of working on e.g. better world building. Interestingly, Lower Decks manages to drop a ton of references while both creating its own identity and training an undeniably Trek ethos.

One bit where she's hiding behind a pillar, pops out to take a shot, pops back and has this "....fuckin rite!?" look/grin that made me and B crack up.

It was a good episode! Wish they hadnt called that guy Book though, thats Firefly's thing!

I was a bit thrown because he played exactly the same character with his "strong Manchester accent" in Supergirl last season.

I kind of agree with the AV Club's complaint that Discovery is too focused on Michael. But I also very much enjoyed stoned Michael. I've never seen Sonequa Martin-Green smile so much.

Hopefully they keep playing with that now that she’s far away from any Vulcans

Good episode. My expectations for the season remain low, given how S2 and Picard S1 turned out.

S2 was good idk why everyone rags on it

Season 2 was great! Picard was naff but I enjoyed it regardless

They seemed to work well in the first episode

I got the impression the second episode guy just had the power cranked way low because he’s a sadist who likes microwaving people
