it is what it is, which is just tetris, but made by the rez/lumines guy

tetris effect in vr when you're high is something else

closed beta (NotEnough), Sunday, 19 January 2020 13:49 (four years ago) link

PS5 pricing rumors have been hovering around $499, fwiw. There was a comment from Sony at an investors meeting a couple of months ago that their focus is on โ€œmarket penetration and market acceptability.โ€ Which usually means not priced so high as to put people off. But again, we live in the era of $1000 telephones, so who knows.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 January 2020 15:40 (four years ago) link

xps My kids love the Knack games but they're both pretty awful

Ratchet & Clank is a much better action platformer that you should be able to pick up really cheaply

groovypanda, Sunday, 19 January 2020 17:32 (four years ago) link

I keep buying games that are cheap and I like the look of, but honestly the amount of value I've gotten out of Witcher 3 so far, it seems pointless. I can't believe I'm not totally bored of it but I'm sort of deterined to finish it before starting on Dark Souls or Red Dead or CIV6 or any of the other ones I'm keen to check out.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 20 January 2020 09:30 (four years ago) link

I own but have not so much as booted up The Witcher 3 yet, but almost everything I've read about it implies, for better or worse, that finishing it is practically optional, and just dipping in and out is part of the fun. Having finished Breath of the Wild, I can see that, since I can totally imagine lingering in that world and doing more tasks and completing more adventures even after the (imo anticlimactic) big bad is vanquished. Of course, I didn't, since there are lots of other games to play, but I do like the *idea* of open worlds you can just inhabit and explore at will.

Speaking of finishing, I haven't returned to Alien:Isolation in a while, and I suspect it's because the game is *too* good. It's just like one of the good "Alien" films, but, like, hours and hours and hours long.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 January 2020 14:39 (four years ago) link

i almost wish I'd played a few different games before taking on Witcher 3, but it was the first game I'd decided to play properly save for a few old SNES games I'd rebooted, so it was a baptism of fire. I did start Red Dead, and it looks absolutely incredible, but starting it while still being half way through the Witcher main quest felt like I was about to start Gravity's Rainbow halfway through Infinite Jest, for want of a better analogy.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 20 January 2020 15:02 (four years ago) link

Alien Isolation is one of those games that is great but I can't be bothered playing because my wife has already completed it and I was probably in the room about 80% of the time.

thomasintrouble, Monday, 20 January 2020 15:56 (four years ago) link

yet another example of how women are ruining gaming

Tell you a good couch/party game - Knowledge Is Power. Apart from a few connectivity issues, it's a proper hoot

rdr2 is less of an epic tale, and more like a short story read incredibly slowly, while you also walk around and do things incredibly slowly. want to turn around to face the other direction? that takes 3 hours

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!๐Ÿ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 January 2020 16:28 (four years ago) link

i still liked it btw

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!๐Ÿ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 January 2020 16:28 (four years ago) link

thx dog latin! I put overcooked on my list (but will need to get another controller).

I also put spiderman, outworlds on the list and saw Witcher 3 and Dark Souls 3 together for $34. That's a good price, yeah?

Yerac, Monday, 20 January 2020 19:12 (four years ago) link

rdr2

You can always just go straight to RDR online. There's a lot of content in there now.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 20 January 2020 19:15 (four years ago) link

is it still full of people who just show up whenever you spawn and try to kill you? that's pretty much what GTA online and RDR online have been like for me, in the 3-4 total hours i've spent with them. maybe i've just been getting really unlucky with the servers i'm assigned to, but just the possibility of that is enough to keep me away

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!๐Ÿ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Monday, 20 January 2020 19:21 (four years ago) link

You can turn on safe mode and turn off mics, which is what I do

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Monday, 20 January 2020 19:22 (four years ago) link

gta online was the best car racing game of all time

frostpunk is $20 + age of empires: planetfall is $25 in the store atm (until 2/5). i've wanted to play both but feel unsure about 4X/city building games on the ps4... has anyone tried either?

Mordy, Monday, 27 January 2020 16:24 (four years ago) link

i haven't, but i share the same unease. apparently civ VI on ps4 actually has pretty good console interface, but otherwise it seems like a frustrating exercise to use a controller

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!๐Ÿ˜‚ (Karl Malone), Monday, 27 January 2020 16:25 (four years ago) link

i realised that my old crappy tv cuts the edges off the picture of anything i plug through the HDMI, making CIV6 impossible to play because the icons are all on the very border. This has annoyed me.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 27 January 2020 16:33 (four years ago) link

you can adjust that in PS4 settings, right?

babu frik fan account (mh), Monday, 27 January 2020 16:33 (four years ago) link

tried. did nothing. TV doesn't seem to have a setting on it either. happens when I plug my laptop in too. I think it's got some sort of automatic overscan you can't override. I mean, I got it secondhand in 2011, so I dunno

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Monday, 27 January 2020 16:47 (four years ago) link

generally:

To set the display area of the game screen to match the TV screen, select (Settings) > [Sound and Screen] > [Display Area Settings].
This setting is effective only for some applications.

it's good, looking forward to finally playing the last act after all these years. will probably need to replay the whole thing to remember what's going on

ciderpress, Monday, 27 January 2020 20:57 (four years ago) link

makes me glad i kept it in the backlog for all these years lol

Nhex, Monday, 27 January 2020 23:56 (four years ago) link

A week into having that ps4 bundle. Have played a lot of God of War and Event Horizon Zero or whatever it's called. Not really feeling Last of Us even though I love zombies.

I've ordered Sakuza, Spiderman and Witcher 3 and holding off getting another controller and Outer Worlds/Death Stranding until i've made my way through the other games.

Yerac, Thursday, 30 January 2020 19:54 (four years ago) link

Spiderman is absolutely sensational. One of the best games ever.

Come back to Last Of Us in a different mood, maybe. To an extent the effect is cumulative.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 January 2020 21:03 (four years ago) link

Spiderman is such a blast, one of those games where the game itself is almost irrelevant to the experience of just swinging around.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 30 January 2020 23:00 (four years ago) link

it was outrageously fun

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 31 January 2020 05:48 (four years ago) link

Last of Us is definitely a story driven game. It gets really engrossing once you finish the Capitol building.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 31 January 2020 16:39 (four years ago) link

Ha Sakuza. I think I mixed up Sekiro, Yakuza and Sakura all together.

We've been tag teaming all the same saved games (like doing handoffs when one gets aggravated or needs to do some work), so I might play Last of Us on my own.

Yerac, Friday, 31 January 2020 18:01 (four years ago) link

does The Last of Us involve violence on children? that's a no go for me, and I see a child in the game art.

i haven't made it far but I say yes. One dies in the prologue.

I have been very surprised about the amount of swearing in the games. I wished there was a function to play a cleaner version. I have been trying to figure out which games might be ok for this 8 year old that I watch sometimes.

Yerac, Friday, 31 January 2020 18:14 (four years ago) link

Part of the "games aren't just for kids anymore" aesthetics is swearing.

As for what the games you have that are appropriate for a pre-teen, I think Horizon Zero Dawn is the best bet. It's almost profanity-free (the one censorable swear that I can think of is missable, meaning that it's not part of the main storyline), and also doesn't ogle its main character. That said, it is post-apocalyptic and there are scenes where people die horribly.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 31 January 2020 18:24 (four years ago) link

The horrible deaths aren't graphic, however.

Charlotte Brontesaurus (Leee), Friday, 31 January 2020 18:25 (four years ago) link

NBD, really, if you play anything online most of the profuse swearing you'll hear from fellow players is by eight-year-olds afaict.

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Friday, 31 January 2020 18:26 (four years ago) link

I might just get FIFA for him to play and be done with it. He's not my kid so I don't want to be responsible for corruption.

Yerac, Friday, 31 January 2020 18:30 (four years ago) link

Horizon Zero Dawn is pretty good! but itโ€™s also guilty of some of the most outlandishly dull dialogue ever committed to ones and zeroes in a AAA game.

Spider-Man would be a very good bet for an 8 yo - there is no outright killing, you never use a gun, itโ€™s v wholesome

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 31 January 2020 19:31 (four years ago) link

i was reading about spiderman and it said there was some violence and mild swearing.

Yeah we really like Horizon Zero. So far it's our favorite although the dialogue and the one dude that just lays on the ground forever are dull. We just started Witcher 3 last night. So much prologue!

Yerac, Friday, 31 January 2020 19:46 (four years ago) link

Spider-man might have the occasional "damn" or "hell," something like that, but it's pretty innocent super hero fun. But, like, for example, something like Resident Evil 7, if that were a movie it would have to go out unrated for all the extreme violence and language.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 31 January 2020 20:12 (four years ago) link

My 9 year old son loves Ratchet & Clank (good) and Knack (bad) but also racing games like Driveclub and TrackMania as well as Rocket League.

All of those are dirt cheap now.

groovypanda, Friday, 31 January 2020 21:31 (four years ago) link

If you can find games that are rated ESRB "E" or "10+" those tend to be "good for children".

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 31 January 2020 22:24 (four years ago) link

spider-man is damagingly boring. ratchet and clank and rocket league are both enormous fun.

Fizzles, Friday, 31 January 2020 22:26 (four years ago) link

still obsessively playing Witcher 3 and nothing else. completed the main quest and now it feels like the real fun is starting somehow
