they do security stuff based on the hardware, like Touch ID disables itself if it thinks it has been tampered with, in case someone's trying to hack the secure enclave.

This jives with my situation - a side-effect is that it wants my PIN every time

talked to iSmash. they opened it up. it needs a new power button and flex cable. it'll take 3-5 days to get here and once it does they'll make the fix in 2 hrs. they're going to do it for £40, parts, labour, VAT included. they already replaced the screen and home button for free because it's been less than a year since they replaced the screen and they said it felt 'loose'. i love iSmash?!

se2 is basically the only way they're gonna get me to upgrade

just give us an iphone with original SE dimensions, a current cpu, and 256gb of memory... jesus Apple this is not rocket science, your products are not sexy new tech anymore they are commodity hardware so get over yourself

yeah a year ago I sourced a used SE with 128GB storage and decided I am basically done with phones, there is little they could do to get me back in the game until this one dies.

after claiming I was going to stick with 13" laptops at home I had a moment of weakness and bought the 16"

and after another moment where I thought "will I be sad for not getting the i9 in two years"...

i was in the apple store last week and i picked up the Beats headphones and it pinched the shit out of my finger. I am never touching them again.

Yerac, Friday, 24 January 2020 02:19 (four years ago) link

i couldn't get the skin of my finger out and I was trying to play it off like they weren't attached to my hand.

Yerac, Friday, 24 January 2020 02:21 (four years ago) link

I moved some office equipment without properly disassembling it last year, like an idiot, and pinched the palm of my hand in something heavy. After lots of mumbling "ow ow ow" I got it down and ended up ripping off a chunk of skin :(

it me

I’d really prefer something lighter and more airplane-friendly but I couldn’t wait much longer and didn’t want to be checking apple rumors daily for the next few months.

upside: the new keyboard is good, the new speakers are great, and after a surreal and maddening week with Apple support the Bluetooth just spontaneously fixed itself

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Friday, 24 January 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

it is a bit large, but not chonky

babu frik fan account (mh), Friday, 24 January 2020 16:25 (four years ago) link

it's thinner and lighter than my 2013 15", so hey, progress. plus it can reliably wake from sleep without being plugged in.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Friday, 24 January 2020 19:21 (four years ago) link

I would love to purchase an iChonk apple product.

audio seems a little punchy after close range but the speakers on this new mbp are ridiculous

ha, my laptop is so old (because it's better than what they sell now) that i had no idea that sound had gone away until i saw that do the rounds.

Still rocking the Q3 2014 mbp that I got as a hand-me-down at work and loving it! It's pretty maxed-out and every once in awhile my mind boggles at how much the 1tb SSD must have cost them back then.

Dan I., Wednesday, 26 February 2020 20:51 (four years ago) link

oh uh but I turned that startup chime off a long time ago--even though sometimes it sounds anyway, apparently at random?

Dan I., Wednesday, 26 February 2020 20:55 (four years ago) link

Yeah same (well Q1 2015 when it was on clearance lol)...

I got one for home to match it.

two weeks pass...

is this a good thread for asking about buying a new vs. refurbished (by apple or others) macbook ? can post this elsewhere if that’s advisable:

my 2011 macbook pro recently gave out on me and i can’t find anybody who’s willing to even attempt fixing it. so it looks like i need something new.

it looks like ebay has a number of offerings in the 400 - 800 dollar range of macbook pros 2012 -2017. lots of these sellers offer 1 year warranties. can they be trusted ?

a friend has a brand spanking new macbook. no usb ports and a confusing keyboard sort of. i don’t want that, do i ?

is there a particular year, a vintage if you will, of macbooks that is particularly reliable / desirable / durable / unfussy ?

is there a particular online RETAILER, a dependable, trustworthy purveyor of secondhand macs ?

i’m not a graphic designer, a gamer, a tech person. mostly my computer is my interface for large digital music collection, a place to actually type long form things, a way to interact with the internet, also DAW. i’m hopelessly wedded to macbook life, i doubt you could persuade me to leave the cult.

any advice greatly appreciated.

also i’m so sick of looking at ilx on my phone and i need to be keeping up with the sun ra thread ! help !

would you consider a macbook air? way cheaper and doesn't sound like you need a ton of ram or processing power. you can pick up a ~2015 macbook air for like, idk, prob somewhere in the 350-500 range probably?

Clay, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 03:34 (four years ago) link

i’m sure they’re fine but i notice a huge difference bw a 13”
screen and 15” (what i’m after), especially for watching movies etc. plus the disc drive is indispensable, altho i spose i could get an external one.

budo jeru, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 03:39 (four years ago) link

i’m not averse to spending up to, say, 1500 mind

just wondering if there isn’t a better way — seems to me like some of the very newer models might be unintuitive and i worry about increased planned obsolescence. this is my aversion to the new(er), not necessarily the price, although i admit i’m rather uninformed

budo jeru, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 03:43 (four years ago) link

went through this recently and opted for new. MacBooks hold their value so well that I couldn’t justify used on a dollar basis, and other than saying farewell to a few apps I wasn’t using the transition has been seamless.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 17 March 2020 18:31 (four years ago) link

i was not able to get a look at the newer models before i decided, but their various goofy design/feature choices made me ultimately decide that the apparent modest performance boost some of them might have had, plus the necessarily longer support life from being introduced later in new lines, were not enough to outweigh the recent mb air i bought refurbished straight from apple's site.

and what do you know, i regularly use all three data ports at the same time that i'm drawing ac power, so, i'm happy with my choices.

i have once or twice missed the disc drive but not so much that it mattered. once i turned on my old laptop just so i could watch a movie from a dvd.

j., Tuesday, 17 March 2020 23:25 (four years ago) link

not now, apple

stet, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 13:33 (four years ago) link

any experiences buying refurbished from ebay / amazon / online or local tech reseller ?

budo jeru, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 20:22 (four years ago) link

okay, might actually have to get an i5 macbook air. kind of on the fence about whether to get more ram or storage.

circles, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 01:39 (four years ago) link

I think I'm getting mentally close to ditching my 10 year old MBP for a new model. Ars Technica review thinks new 16" MBP is overkill for casual users (such as me) but OTOH having spent so many years with a 15" screen I can't imagine being comfortable with a 13" Mac Air.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 27 March 2020 10:36 (four years ago) link

I got a “renewed” iPad Pro from amazon that was basically like new.

I can’t speak to eBay but I bought a 2013 15 inch MBP secondhand in 2016 and it’s fast and handles the newest OS just fine. I’m not a power user but Adobe Suite is still quick. I’d recommend any of the 15 inch MBPs since 2013 up until they started futzing with the keyboard. The only difference I’ve noticed is that the 2013 model can’t work as a second screen with an iPad unless you buy one of the non-apple apps

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 27 March 2020 10:49 (four years ago) link

In other words, consumers who liked the iPhone SE because they felt the iPhone 6S was too big will be disappointed, but they’ll still probably get a modern Apple processor in a phone that is markedly smaller than the current flagships.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 3 April 2020 21:42 (four years ago) link

Would buy

calstars, Friday, 3 April 2020 22:22 (four years ago) link

The reason I got an SE was because I didn't like the iPhone 8, so I really don't see the point of this.

o. nate, Saturday, 4 April 2020 02:01 (four years ago) link

It’ll be $300 cheaper than the cheapest iPhone
It’ll have a home button and long ass battery life
Nuff said ?

calstars, Saturday, 4 April 2020 02:16 (four years ago) link

I mean if it's best I can find, I'll buy it, even though I really don't like the button that doesn't click when you press it, or the location of the power switch, or how big it is. I'm still holding out hope someone will come out with a smaller phone before I need to buy a new one.

o. nate, Saturday, 4 April 2020 02:18 (four years ago) link

I’m not getting any phones bigger than my actual SE, which I guess I’m going to have to keep using another 40 years, or else give up on smartphones. Which would be no sweat if it weren’t for maps and iMessage.
