the zombies have gone prog hardcore

opden gnash (imago), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:41 (four years ago) link

ok the rest of the album is imo good-to-very-good rather than great (and as i say, tt has already played me like three of its tracks!) but man Concrete

opden gnash (imago), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:09 (four years ago) link

the grimes comparison really only makes sense for "sit/stay", which belongs to the same sort of industrial pop territory as "kill v maim". though if grimes actually made the metal album she kept threatening to i'd imagine it'd probably sound fairly similar to this but probably not as good.

some people like coffee
but these lifeless flaaaavors don't saaatisfyyy meeee

I am not sure how much staying power this will have for me, but it is bringing the lols for me right now. Concrete and Sit/Stay are great. A lot of the twists and turns in other tracks are interesting. At the very least it will be a good gym album.

I like this

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 16 January 2020 01:33 (four years ago) link

I'm a fan. I am digging Poppy. not sure about her ballads but Concrete is a doozy. Turn me into a street indeed.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 16 January 2020 03:33 (four years ago) link

This is ... something.
Very 90's sounding somehow. 'Concrete' and 'Sit/Stay' the clear highlights. The jarring shifts between "songs within songs" are pretty crazy but kinda gimmicky and distract from some genuinely great musical sequences.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 16 January 2020 10:42 (four years ago) link

i def thought "this sounds like the late 90s" when i was listening to it

idgaf (roxymuzak), Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:11 (four years ago) link

The worst thing that could happen to her is turning into a real person, with real feelings.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:27 (four years ago) link

Def see the '90s thing.

I'm struggling to hear how it's much more than a basic version of Grimes.

Poppy & Grimes are both mining the same Japanese styles, which, tbf, is a completely irrational thing for me to be annoyed about because people can take influence from wherever, but it does annoy me.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:36 (four years ago) link

i definitely hear the jpop metal/rock-tinged idol (ie babymetal, momoiro clover z, bis) influence on poppy but i think the influence of jpop on grimes has been pretty overstated beyond her saying she's a fan of like, perfume and kyary in interviews

ufo, Thursday, 16 January 2020 15:57 (four years ago) link

As I suspected, I loved it this morning when I played it at the gym.

An Oral History of Deez Nutz (PBKR), Thursday, 16 January 2020 16:16 (four years ago) link

I'm digging this Grimes-goes-Nitzer-Ebb approach.

This & Hot Pink basically most listened on Spotify this month. Don’t really care for the slow ones tbh.

steer karma (gyac), Friday, 17 January 2020 15:24 (four years ago) link

I Disagree joining Concrete and Sit/Stay as the upper tier tracks. Don't Go Outside with all the reprises of previous tracks is awesome too.

The Traveling Wilkes-Barre's (PBKR), Friday, 17 January 2020 16:15 (four years ago) link

What's cool about this record is, if you don't care for a song, it will change genres in about 20 seconds so just sit tight.

She needs to go all in on the whole post-genre thing, and make an entire record like Concrete, which covers about 5 in one song.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 17 January 2020 18:27 (four years ago) link

I'm a 47 year old man and I spent the better part of the day on a Poppy internet trawl. I have learned a great deal, not all of it good. She may in fact be an awful, terrible person.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 18 January 2020 02:18 (four years ago) link

It is quite the thing to get a friend into this album and then to drop Moshi Moshi on her.

steer karma (gyac), Monday, 20 January 2020 10:26 (four years ago) link

It's all a scam. Poppy just wants our money. I've gone from never heard of her, to a huge fan, to disillusioned in less than a week.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 20 January 2020 21:07 (four years ago) link

Do we have Poppy truthers on ILM now?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 20 January 2020 21:08 (four years ago) link

Yes. I've been on this board for 15 years, just lying in wait to expose the sham that is Poppy.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 20 January 2020 22:56 (four years ago) link

I can't help but admire your tenacity

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 20 January 2020 23:04 (four years ago) link

Admittedly, it's been a long slog. Do you know how many threads on grime I had to get through, just waiting for the moment to strike?

Poppy thinks she's David Bowie, and can just change styles and concepts every couple years. But she'd be nowhere wtihout Titanic Sinclair. He made her. And she cheated on him with a performer named Ghostemane, fired him and then tried to erase his contributions. Then she leaked that he attempted suicide out of despair, and made it sound like she was the real victim...and then used it to promote her stupid album. Poppy is a piece of garbage.

"I got rid of titanic sinclair, and yeah he tried to kill himself because I abaondoned him but whatevs...buy my new album"

kornrulez6969, Monday, 20 January 2020 23:51 (four years ago) link

imo it’s weird that you never got the sense that titanic sinclair himself is abusive

This is Titanic Sinclair's brother speaking at length on the whole thing. He has more experience with Mars Argo than Poppy, but he knows Poppy fairly well. I understand it's his brother and fairly biased, but the details are not flattering.

no he's a middle aged man who has decided to come down hard on the side of an alleged abuser in a "he said she said" situation where there's 2 shes and one he

idk considering the "truth" you've provided so far (a one-paragraph four-page monologue by an alleged abuser's brother) i think it's more likely your head stuck in wet cement

idgaf (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 21:00 (four years ago) link

Damn, this album is good. Lots of crowd pleasing nods to pop history but every song is coherent within itself. The vocals hold everything together beautifully.

Jeff W, Sunday, 2 February 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

saw her last night in boston with ilx godfather tom e., the first of two sold out shows at a 475-cap venue near my apartment. it was great, the crowd was bonkers, and the tatu cover ruled

idgaf (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 5 February 2020 15:23 (four years ago) link

Given Grimes' words dealing with Poppy/Sinclair et al, I definitely feel some sympathy to the brother's side of the story. Having loosely followed this drama over the years, I felt they were both shitty people. Poppy's comments exposing Sinclair's attempting suicide and its impact on the family (stated by his brother) is BS, and reprehensible. It's certainly not the first time this sort of thing has happened in Hollywood. That said, drama aside, the video/song is good. What Poppy does moving forward will be interesting.

Perhaps Titanic Sinclair should change his name? He's probably ostracized at this point though. For everyone automatically alleging his status as an abuser, take a minute to also truly internalize the perspective his brother states above (despite his lack of carriage returns; it was Reddit, you need two there).

FWIW all the drama is a classic case of "don't shit where you eat"
