the warriors run made everyone think centers are bad now

He’s a good player! Paying Deandre 10m a year is fine! I’ll never understand why people disagree with this

― Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, January 14, 2020 12:51 PM (four minutes ago)

lol. no other team would have given him that contract or anything close to it.

go look at real plus minus or 538 war, deandre's production is the same as guys like robert williams, mitchell robinson, robin lopez, alex len, daniel theis etc... late first or early second round picks and guys making half of deandre's yearly salary on one year deals. richaun holmes is on a 2 year $9 million deal.

the deandre contract is a crazy overpay that is going to hamper the nets' ability to contend in the next few years when they actually need to win games. we don't need to pretend like it's anything more than it is.

Just found out Deandre is a lefty. Never knew cause only shots I've seen him take are dunks.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 18:05 (four years ago) link

i mean the nets themselves aren't even pretending like deandre is worth $10m a year on the court... they just granted espn access to write a huge story about how they gave the guy a bunch of money because he's funny. this is their GM on the record.

Nets general manager Sean Marks says Brooklyn liked Jordan as much for his constant wisecracking as his ability to swat shots. Jordan's experience, coupled with his defensive prowess and potential to guide Allen, made him attractive to the team.

And being close with the Nets' supermax duo didn't hurt.

"We knew we were wading through some uncharted waters where we've never been before -- where expectations are a little bit bigger," Marks says. "To have a guy like DJ, who can hopefully keep the mood light behind the scenes is -- it's really important."

lol

if matt was a GM his team would be starting alex len at the 3, jonas at the 4 and deandre at the 5. his team would be in the repeater tax.

jokic is the starting PG but is having trouble getting around picks on defense, leading to problems in the locker room

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 14 January 2020 18:17 (four years ago) link

ivica zubac has had some moments but is having trouble providing spacing at the 2. matt is searching for answers and has heard charlotte is open to moving bismack biyombo.

savage hoops beef burn. don't know how matt recovers from this.

Dude one 10m a year contract is not going to alter their long term plans either way. He’s a good backup and they’re gonna be fine with that.

This is all very weird that 8% of their salary cap is supposed to be an albatross.

If Mitchell Robinson was a free agent next offseason do you really think he’d get less than 10m a year

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:29 (four years ago) link

Meyers Leonard makes 11m this season, olynyk 11m, Dieng makes 16m, Jonas 16m. Maybe people wring their hands about that Dieng salary idk.

i don't buy this at all. teams, even tax teams, routinely get squeezed on contracts that are less than $10m per year. it's not their only bad contract (they're paying taurean prince and caris lavert a combined $30 million in 2021) but it's a shit ton of money to pay for a back up center, and the salaries of every other back up center in the league reflect that. it's going to effect what they're able to do the next two seasons.

these are bad contracts i'm not sure how this is supposed to convince me that deandre jordan is not on a bad contract

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:42 (four years ago) link

Caris Levert is a bad contract now? In the offseason it was supposedly such a steal that nba writers were publicly alleging his agent was incompetent.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:45 (four years ago) link

Like half the teams in the nba have payrolls over 130m. DeAndre Jordan getting 10m isn’t a big deal. It’s truly crazy to think it is. I mean do you think he should have gotten 6 mil a year instead? The minimum?

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:46 (four years ago) link

I can’t imagine how it would affect what they do the next two seasons. I mean maybe they can’t sign Jarrett Allen if their owner decides to be cheap. But they went all in on KD and Kyrie and are capped out from that. I think they’re ok with it. If they were paying robin lopez 5m instead it wouldn’t really change anything cap-wise. And he’s not as good!

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 19:57 (four years ago) link

if they don't sign jarrett allen because they're paying a premium for deandre jordan's decline years that's an extremely bad outcome.

in other news, dubs clearly like Chriss

The Marquese Chriss re-signing is indeed imminent, as first reported by @MarcJSpearsESPN. Was the plan all along, per league sources. Warriors were relieved Chriss went unclaimed on waivers and are very interested in keeping him beyond this season.

But now you’re putting yourself in a logical loop where Deandre at 10 million is crazy but Jarrett Allen at 20 makes a lot of sense.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:09 (four years ago) link

where did i say i would sign jarrett allen for 20?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:11 (four years ago) link

If Jarrett Allen doesn’t get a big free agent deal then you can just keep him!

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:12 (four years ago) link

If Allen walks because you are worried about the luxury tax (which is weird since you signed KD and Kyrie), then Deandre can just be your starting center for 9.8 million. It’s fine! Everyone thought this was fine 18 months ago!

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

And yeah it’s a 4 year deal. We’re pretty deep into year 1 and Deandre is still good at basketball so

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:15 (four years ago) link

everyone thought it was fine when dallas overpaid for a year of him, he did nothing to help them, and they dumped his ass to the knicks?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:16 (four years ago) link

it's nice that deandre jordan is not an unplayable disaster in year one of his deal but unfortunately for the nets nothing that is happening this season matters

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:32 (four years ago) link

He’s averaging 14/17/3 per 36 with a 67% TS%. So yeah not an unplayable disaster. Some might even say he’s “good,” like he has been for his whole career.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:43 (four years ago) link

hm if only there were reasons why deandre jordan doesn't play 36 minutes per game anymore...

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:45 (four years ago) link

Do people in here think he’s a bad NBA player? Is that the level of takes that you’ve accepted in your life

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 21:07 (four years ago) link

"bad nba player" is such a useless rubric. we know what he is. he's an aging center who relies on athleticism. he's going to get worse, not better. guys like this don't generally get 4 year contracts for a reason. he's not out there, like, murdering the nets (yet), but it's a contract that is unquestionably out of balance with the market.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 21:11 (four years ago) link

Above average player with above average salary.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 21:17 (four years ago) link

paying players market rate sucks ass though, you can't build a top team with $100m worth of players. you have to have guys that are underpaid due to the max or them outplaying their contract

ciderpress, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 21:25 (four years ago) link

I think a team where no one is overpaid can be pretty darn good

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 21:44 (four years ago) link

so does my boss apparently, hey ohhh

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 23:22 (four years ago) link

for the nets this whole argument is moot bc kyrie & kd took pay cuts to make room for dj
