Also the argument isn't that that isn't the case in most cinematic depictions of war and violence (as it's pretty overwhelmingly the norm to depict it all as a grand adventure where the heroes barely get a scratch and can enjoy a good night's sleep when the pools of the enemy's blood have begun to coagulate) but rather that SW isn't exactly a gritty documentary about the human cost of intergalactic battle (which, even as I've argued against that notion, I've never said it should be or that anyone would expect it to be, given the kid-friendly nature of the enterprise).

Xxxpost She's wrecked but even she manages to have sex with Reece and have jocular moments at the hotel. These things don't mean she's not feeling destroyed inside, but everyone needs levity even in tragedy.

Adrenaline takes over in battle when you're in a monumental fight for your life, as well

I don't think anybody ever argued it was. The original statement has been warped a lot.

Granted, part of the issue here is that if we're talking exclusively about the movies here, the cumulative forty years of the SW universe has a runtime of like < one day and thusly only has time to depict what's most crucial to the plot (see for instance: Jar Jar stepping in a pile of shit). What I've seen of The Clone Wars thus far has actually done a pretty good job of giving some space to the more human effects of the war, at least in part because it has the luxury to do so.

@ AF - what Evan said, pretty much --- Finn and Rose are both shown as *affected* by death, but I still don't think the films *linger* on it. ymmv tho!

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 17:58 (four years ago) link

It's Finn's only consistent motivation - get the fuck away from the First Order, go to pieces when it looks like that's not possible. It's still neck-and-neck with "Can I have Rey's number, why because she interesting" at the start of the second film, but some of that can be read as "Because she can fuck up Stormtroopers and the dude with the Lightsaber"

Rose not so much, I'll grant - and by coming in for the second film (of two, when will SWIX ever get released, none of us will ever know) she has a lot less of an arc.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 18:17 (four years ago) link

I think my original point was also more about how SW the franchise is perceived as fun for the whole family (again the merchandising and licensing choices make this undeniable, and those things don't happen in hindsight), and yet the lack of shyness explicitly showing relatable people and anthropomorphized aliens being murdered constantly is matched only by adult only targeted franchises or stand alone films like Game of Thrones or Hacksaw Ridge (idk it just popped in my head) respectively. Yeah no blood and guts (however yes dismemberment) sure but otherwise just as blatant. And in those serious war movies/shows, the dark tone is more appropriate, so they DO linger on the trauma. SW is stuck in the middle where they want to keep it fun and light, but the brutality of battle stays in sharp focus. Kind of an awkward spot imo.

the ewok death used to really fuck me up as a kid

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 18:38 (four years ago) link

Ha, yeah the music gets really mournful in that scene as well iirc which emphasizes it

Evan, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 18:40 (four years ago) link

I have total sonic recall of the noise the ewok makes, too. R2s grieving noises are pretty indelibly stamped on my psyche. And the rancor keeper's.

I've let my kid (who's 7) watch all the Star Wars movies, but I do feel a bit weird about exposing him to all that cinematic violence. It does start to seem a bit relentless after a while. Star Wars does seem to occupy a gray area where the movies are not marketed as kids movies, but there's a huge industry of tie-ins that clearly are aimed at kids. I guess Hollywood is pretty good at straddling that line. I wouldn't mind if the violence was toned down a bit, but I guess I've made my choice that it's acceptable.

o. nate, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:00 (four years ago) link

@ AF - we mean different things by "lingered on" --- yes okay it sets up finn's one-liner motivation for the first movie and a half, as much as anything else you might read on the back of the action figure package. (side note though, the point of his character arc in TLJ is that he finds something else to drive him - to fight for saving the people he loves instead of escaping the thing he hates.)

but like compare this to any drama (for adults or for teens for that matter) about a veteran with PTSD or someone who's a survivor of some terrible attack or accident, or is just in mourning for their recently-deceased friend. think about how it would be written, how it would be performed, how it would be lit and edited, how important this history would be every conversation they have.... lots of different ways to do it but this is what i'm thinking about. again i think harry potter is much more invested in this, so it's not like it's impossible to do in a teen-oriented genre movie, they just didn't do it as much here, imho.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 21:20 (four years ago) link

i watched Trading Places with my 11 and 8 year old over Christmas and wow i forgot how much titties are goin on in that movie. which i was a lot more fine with than Eddie Murphy saying "f*ggot" about 10 times. although i fear it may wind up contributing to unrealistic expectations about the extent to which adults just enthusiastically take their tops off during dance parties.

As many fans speculated/hoped, this iteration of Episode IX would have seen Rey and Kylo working from similar motives, with both characters fighting against the binary ideologies that have governed their world for ages. Ultimately, unlike Rise, Rey’s attempts to coax Ben Solo out of his Kylo Ren angst helmet fail, and he is “extinguished”—but not before revealing that he killed Rey’s parents (who were, indeed, “nobodies”) on Snoke’s orders.

never going to see either of these but isn't it probably because the writer of Body Heat, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and The Accidental Tourist wrote The Force Awakens, and the writer of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice wrote this one?
