probably better than Inland Empire - while the latter is more terrifying it's also a bit more inscrutable

both of those films still seem great

succeeds as a 1) a horror film 2) a queer film 3) a refinement of lost highway that doesn't get lost in balthazar getty's charisma vacuum

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 13 January 2020 22:49 (four years ago) link

Ha, MD‘s reputation has only increased since its release I reckon. On a lot of Best of X lists. So yes, people still ride for it.

Yeah, what? I think this is in the inner-circle pantheon for tons of people, certainly me.

That said, the experience of watching it in the theater was, for me, so overwhelming, so strange, so singular, that I have never watched it again, unwilling to take any risk of modifying that experience.

I saw it in a free preview in October '01, grumbled about its derivative parts after dozing for five minutes, saw it again in December and cried.

I probably watch this about once a month

the first time I watched this, it was on my parents' mediocre DVD machine, one which didn't easily allow you to jump to a specific time on the DVD (or, more likely, I just didn't know how to do it), and I accidentally ejected the DVD mid-watch, and because the DVD isn't broken into scenes that you can skip through, I had to fast forward it back to like the 80 minute mark.

This is a sincere question: what is that like??

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 02:59 (four years ago) link

I haven’t watched it in a few years. Gonna project it in a moment though, and make it a headphones listen. Fuck yeah

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 03:54 (four years ago) link

i’m trying to remember how old i was when i first saw this. i had to have been like... 16? i’m pretty sure it was my first lynch anything but maybe i saw blue velvet first. i found it fascinating but it mainly made me want to see more david lynch movies, like i had been fantasizing about whatever lost highway was from the moment i heard the soundtrack and etc. now when i watch it i see it as this wholly individual sensory experience, i sink in from the moment it starts. idk if i’ve ever paused this movie

Neanderthal, I may be wrong, but I think the MD DVD doesn't have chapter breaks.

Eephus, it's great, I've gained a lot of appreciation for the film this past year. It's a comfort film for me, especially the sequence of scenes from the cowboy to silencio.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 04:06 (four years ago) link

what a terrible opening thread. yes, this is my favorite Lynch movie.

akm, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 04:07 (four years ago) link

I bought a bootleg DVD of the TV version many years ago - IIRC, zero surprise it didn't get made and amazing that Lynch salvaged it into this.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 04:14 (four years ago) link

Moodles it doesn't - so my only option was to try and manually jump to a specific timeframe in the DVD, once I accidentally restarted it. and i couldn't figure it out cos it was either a crap DVD player or I was a crap DVD user

papa stank (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 04:23 (four years ago) link

last time i saw this was about 6 years ago in a soon-to-be collapsed log cabin and with the nuttering noises of nature about i realized the viewing experience wouldn't be topped. enjoyed watching a bear amble past the cabin the following morning while i brushed my teeth.

I just watched this for the first time a month ago. My first Lynch! Though kind of know his reputation. The movie mostly worked for me, certain moments like the audition scene in particular. Others, like the singer scene, I felt didn't connect but it seems one of those movies where everybody gets something different out of it

Just encountering Lynch! Jealous!

I probably watch this about once a month

No joke, I probably spent the better part of a month putting on Eraserhead just before I lay down to sleep. It was pretty great. I mean, I think it may have permanently ruined me as a functional human being, but would recommend.

Was watching that clip yesterday for the first time in god knows how long. Kevin Spacey all intoning "big fat guy - I mean like orca fat" and then it zooms in on the fat black woman's mugshot.

hard to imagine that a bryan singer movie starring kevin spacey could be problematic but here we are i guess

fwiw, per David R's Letterboxd account, he has upgraded this film to 9/10, calling himself "a dolt" for the opinion expressed in the first post.

I, otoh, initially thought this was just another dumb masterpiece but have come around to appreciating it as the quintessential lip-smackin' lesbian flick of our generation.

papa stank (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 16:38 (four years ago) link

I just this moment imagined an alternate world where Lynch refashioned a failed television pilot into a widely-acclaimed film only instead of Mulholland Drive it was On The Air.
