Just listening to that Misþyrming album and wow they really, really really like Mgla.

Siegbran, Monday, 13 January 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

Listened to it a second time, man that’s shameless. Whoever was representing the Marvin Gaye estate can probably expect a phone call from Poland.

Siegbran, Monday, 13 January 2020 17:06 (four years ago) link

Algleymi features more 'progressive' touches than the classic & to my ears more minimalistic Mgła sound.

pomenitul, Monday, 13 January 2020 17:34 (four years ago) link

I can see they try to embellish things a bit with different melodies and some fancy synth interludes but their main groove is *so* similar, the vocals both in sound and cadence, the drums, the song structures...I mean these guys are good at what they do, it's undoubtedly a good record and right up my alley in principle but I'm not sure I can get fully on board here.

Siegbran, Monday, 13 January 2020 19:33 (four years ago) link

Certainly, no one could accuse Mgla of being progressive.

this one should be on the list too:

Bstep, Monday, 13 January 2020 19:51 (four years ago) link

I can hear where you're coming from, Siegbran, but I do think there's enough variation in terms of structure and atmosphere to impel a distinct effect. Incidentally, as much as I enjoy Age of Excuse, Algleymi tops it in my book, in no small part due to its epic aspirations and more open-ended songwriting.

pomenitul, Monday, 13 January 2020 19:54 (four years ago) link

Having finally heard the FPA album: C'est ça >>> Love Exchange Failure.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 13:00 (four years ago) link

well, LEF was basically this year's Deafheaven album so

imago, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 13:02 (four years ago) link

At times C'est ça comes across as a friendly send-up of blackgaze as a whole, which mirrors my own feelings towards it.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 13:09 (four years ago) link

Kinda bummed this Calacorn demo didn't get nominated, it's pretty rad. At least Herxheim made it!

My mistake, I guess it's *Calacorm* & holy moley it rules!

a thousand keening bullshit-detectors (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 14:05 (four years ago) link

I just wanted to remind everybody about the great Vastum album, "Orificial Purge", which I listened to way more than the Tomb Mold album (not that it has to be either/or). The intro to the title track is just beastly. I cannot listen to it without at least slightly head banging.

An album discovered fairly recently - maybe through this thread - is Immortal Bird's Thrive on Neglect. Stand out track for me is Avolition. Another nice discovery is that Jute Gyte finally released something that clicked with me this year, though I don't know if it will make my ballot. That nominations list is intimidating. I feel like with a few exceptions my ballot is going to be almost identical to my nominations.

beard papa, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 17:43 (four years ago) link

I meant to extend the "slightly head banging" thought, which as written reads like some extremely faint praise, to make it clear that it causes me to do so in inappropriate public places, such as my place of work, the gym, public transportation, etc.

beard papa, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 17:50 (four years ago) link

There could be a good 'which tracks make you spontaneously head bang' thread! For me, the two that spring straight to mind are Sinners Bleed and Raining Blood.

Cosign on the Vastum, one of my favorite death metal albums of 2019, along with Imprecation and Coffin Rot.

o. nate, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 20:01 (four years ago) link

From the province that turned the word 'tabernacle' into a slur, I give you… Ossuaire, who put out an impressive diptych of albums last year. The first, Premiers chants is very much worth your time, but the second, aptly-named Derniers chants is where it's at:

https://ossuaire.bandcamp.com/album/derniers-chants

This is anti-Catholic melodic atmoblack haunted by the troubadours of yore and which does very little to expand the (primarily francophone) subgenre. Not that it matters: Ossuaire achieves exactly what it sets out to do, thanks in no small part to its superlative songwriting.

pomenitul, Thursday, 16 January 2020 11:16 (four years ago) link

Speaking of medieval-esque BM gestures, Obsequiae's The Palms of Sorrowed Kings is absolutely glorious, although I doubt it'll need my help to place.

pomenitul, Thursday, 16 January 2020 11:18 (four years ago) link

A few more that don't need my laurels to place but that will undoubtedly be on my ballot:

Big Brave – A Gaze Among Them
Cult of Luna – A Dawn to Fear
Mgła – Age of Excuse
Sunn O))) – Life Metal
Tomb Mold – Planetary Clairvoyance

pomenitul, Saturday, 18 January 2020 11:46 (four years ago) link

I like this Elizabeth Colour Wheel song a lot, like I mean a lot a lot (& it's not entirely dissimilar to Big Brave, now that I think about it)

a thousand keening bullshit-detectors (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 18 January 2020 13:05 (four years ago) link

I quite enjoyed that album, but Big Brave's dronier tempos and Robin Wattie's voice give them a clear edge imho.

pomenitul, Saturday, 18 January 2020 18:02 (four years ago) link

Anybody voted yet? I must admit I haven't even started to compile a longlist yet but I will start on Sunday afternoon.

Dog Is Daed (Oor Neechy), Sunday, 19 January 2020 00:33 (four years ago) link

That Tomb Mold is so great. Sci-fi death needs more participants.

The riffs might feel non-descript at first but on closer listens it's dragging you into a interplanetary dystopia.

I met one of the guitarists after his set at PSV. He blushed when i complimented his performance and i watched Carcass with him later. Super non-pretentious kids that just love metal. The frontman had a Star Trek shirt on.

papa stank (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 January 2020 00:41 (four years ago) link

Ashes - Ashes (if you like Burzum, but not made by Burzum)
Bölzer - Lese Majesty (after the super disappointing Hero this is really good again)
Kampfar - Ofidians Manifest (excellent melodic BM with great varied vocals)
Kwade Droes - Onder De Toren (somewhere between Lugubrum and Urfaust)
Mayhem - Daemon (so much better than a 2019 Mayhem album should be)
Pensées Nocturnes - Grand Guignol Orchestra (jazz/dark cabaret/circus music/metal, I'm still undecided if this is actually good or if I'm just trying too hard, but it's definitely something)
Xentrix - Bury The Pain (so these guys were Metallica copycats back in the day, they reform, and basically engage in some fan fiction "what if Metallica was still in the Puppets era and Hetfield didn't develop that -ah vocal tick")
Goatpenis/Defectrator - Bloodpact In Cataclysmic Warfare (you know you want it)

Siegbran, Monday, 20 January 2020 18:35 (four years ago) link

*tic not tick.

Siegbran, Monday, 20 January 2020 18:36 (four years ago) link

Heh, my feelings exactly. Regardless, it's one of the more memorable albums I heard last year.

anybody voted yet?

Dog Is Daed (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 16:27 (four years ago) link

My ballot's ready but I'm still hoping some brave CAMPAIGNER will STAN for an obscure favourite IN THIS VERY THREAD.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 16:28 (four years ago) link

anybody who votes for Dead Neanderthals has to answer to me

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 16:30 (four years ago) link

but in all seriousness, I need some downtime tonight to compile my votes.

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 16:30 (four years ago) link

I'll vote this week.

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 16:31 (four years ago) link

Bump.

I've got some more stuff I'd like to stan for but I'll save it for later.

pomenitul, Friday, 24 January 2020 21:15 (four years ago) link

Once I’m done with the main poll, I’ll vet my choices and vote in this. Wilderun climbs the ranks each time I listen to it.

we only have one ballot so far afaik

Oor Neechy, Friday, 24 January 2020 22:14 (four years ago) link

did I hear someone say Wilderun

opden gnash (imago), Friday, 24 January 2020 22:15 (four years ago) link

Voted - It's truly a year where, for me anyways, a lot of good metal records missed the top 50 cut - the ones bubbling under that number, for me, are awesome, too.

So what the heck - campaigning for my missed cuts:

Vircolac - Masque
The Great Old Ones - Cosmicism
Nightfell - A Sanity Deranged
Liturgy - H.A.Q.Q.
Imprecation - Damnatio Ad Bestias
Weeping Sores - False Confession
Helium Horse Fly - Hollowed
Pulchra Morte - Divina Autem et Aniles
Lunar Shadow - The Smokeless Fires
Ataraxie - Résignés
Maestus - Deliquesce
Ares Kingdom - By the Light of Their Destruction
Unfathomable Ruination - Enraged & Unbound

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 24 January 2020 22:18 (four years ago) link

My record that climbed highest for me each time I listened to it, this year, and what I played while voting was 'Ceremony of Silence - Oútis' - really great riffs and atmosphere - if ya haven't heard it - try it!

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 24 January 2020 22:21 (four years ago) link

I got the previous Amygdala album in the mail yesterday, and it also shreds. They still have copies of the second pressing available, and they threw in a free split 7" with Saligia for my troubles. Highly recommended.

I also finally got to listening to All Bitches Die, and honestly Caligula blows it away. Nuance, feeling, musicality, I'm not sure what it is, but Caligula makes ABD sound like a b&w photocopy.

Hilary Duff McKagan (Tom Violence), Friday, 24 January 2020 22:30 (four years ago) link

disagree with this, but agree with the b&w photocopy part.

Ceremony of Silence - Oútis

I really enjoyed this one as well, even though it didn't quite make my preliminary ballot. Incidentally, your own list of missed cuts is remarkably similar to my own (I couldn't not vote for Maestus and Weeping Sores, though).

pomenitul, Saturday, 25 January 2020 10:47 (four years ago) link

I'm listening to the Fly Pan Am album now, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be funny but I've found myself laughing a couple times. It's an intentional send up, right?

Hilary Duff McKagan (Tom Violence), Saturday, 25 January 2020 13:32 (four years ago) link

I just added about 80 albums to listen to and add to my ballot of 45 albums :/

The Kostnatění was great! Disorienting and jagged. Exciting like a bad trip.*

The Liturgy album is good too. Black metal, glitch, blues harmonica, ondes martenot, it's all here, man.

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Saturday, 25 January 2020 18:37 (four years ago) link

Okay, apparently no ondes martenot or harmonica (unless they call it 'harp' consistently in the album credits), but there's a lot of sound here and it's hard to keep it all straight.

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Saturday, 25 January 2020 18:43 (four years ago) link

Caligula is so good, it got me to submit my first ballot here. Goddamn.

octobeard, Saturday, 25 January 2020 20:14 (four years ago) link

I'm up to the Big|Brave album now, and I can't believe I skipped seeing them coming through Boston at least four times since 2015. Also the black/black cover of Ardor looks familiar, I could swear I saw someone selling it at a merch booth in Manchester NH but they've never played here, so it must just be a design similarity.

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Saturday, 25 January 2020 20:32 (four years ago) link

Digging this Ossuaire album

Dinsdale, Saturday, 25 January 2020 20:46 (four years ago) link

Does the Astronoid singer sound like Jim Adkins from Jimmy Eat World to anybody else? Wouldn't this be a fun direction for that band to go in.

Schammasch Cannonball (Tom Violence), Saturday, 25 January 2020 21:48 (four years ago) link

I think I actively dislike Astronoid.

Big Brave fucking rules and I'll impale anyone who says otherwise

Kostnatění are my pick for 2019 BM dissonance, over and above the latest Deathspell Omega.

As for Caligula, it's one of my AOTY, but I couldn't in good conscience vote for it in this poll, for am I the anti-paladin of Tr0o m3t4L.

Liturgy was too much of a good thing imo. I liked it, but it didn't quite make it onto my ballot.
